Illinois To Sell Self-Extinguishing Cigarettes Next Year

There are 24 comments on the WBBM-AM Chicago story from Aug 15, 2007, titled Illinois To Sell Self-Extinguishing Cigarettes Next Year. In it, WBBM-AM Chicago reports that:

“It's kind of like it was so far off in the future when it was passed that people didn't think about it”

Starting next year, cigarettes sold in Illinois must be manufactured in a way that makes them more likely to go out if a smoker stops puffing on them. via WBBM-AM Chicago

This type of self-extingushing cigarette will help cut down the number of fires caused by smokers every year. Help save some lives and maybe even help keep a lid on Ins rates.

Another clueless smoker in denial of the pain and suffering that smoking causes to others.
"For example, in 1995, almost 1,400 Americans died from burns caused by fires started by smoking. Additional thousands suffered non-fatal burns.......the leading cause of fire deaths in 1998 in more than half the states was smoking."

I've always wondered how many of these smoker fires were started by the person drinking too much alcohol or illegal drugs and dropping the cigarette. I've smoked for a long time and somehow I've managed not to start a fire. Now it seems every fire that started was caused by "smoking", nothing else.

When I lived in an apartment years ago I had a downstairs neighbor who passed out on his couch with a lit cigarette after a long night of drinking.

Turned out the dumb a** had disabled his smoke alarm and by the time he woke up his whole apartment was on fire and mine had started filling up with smoke.

Fortunately he had the sense to pound on my door and woke me up as my alarm hadn't sounded yet. We both managed to get everyone out of the building.

He was the only one injured.

He was arrested...and evicted.

Can anyone tell me what the chemicals in this additive are? I've noticed that I have had a terrible cough since the change has been made. Now some smart allecks may imply that maybe if i didn't smoke I wouldn't cough,Obviously this is true, but I don't feel that tobacco companies should be able to impose more harsh chemicals to those of us who are already addicted to the carcinogens we so foolishly can't put down as it is. What am I smoking? Why wasn't I informed or educated about this???
