Illinois To Sell Self-Extinguishing Cigarettes Next Year

Aug 15, 2007 Full story: WBBM-AM Chicago 24

“It's kind of like it was so far off in the future when it was passed that people didn't think about it”

Starting next year, cigarettes sold in Illinois must be manufactured in a way that makes them more likely to go out if a smoker stops puffing on them. via WBBM-AM Chicago

Maybe there will be fewer fires and fewer people dying in fires caused by smokers leaving cigarettes smouldering. It should be mandatory everywhere. I'm sure firefighters would agree.

Oh sure. There are how many of these a year?

Another clueless smoker in denial of the pain and suffering that smoking causes to others.

"For example, in 1995, almost 1,400 Americans died from burns caused by fires started by smoking. Additional thousands suffered non-fatal burns.......the leading cause of fire deaths in 1998 in more than half the states was smoking."

Oh, woe is me !

14,000 people are killed by guns
44,000 people are killed by autos

and we are worried by smoking, get a life all of you and shut the f*** up.

I don't like perfume so should I be privilege in getting this banned, I almost puke when I smell the sh** in my presense. Maybe we should tax the hell out it and this would go away.

400,000 die each year from smoking.

Have you got a figure for deaths from perfume?

Idiot.

Actually, over 1,000 people die every year in fires caused by cigarettes.
Here in Montana, we've got at least three major forest fires going right now started by cigarettes tossed out of vehicles.

Mr UK,
400,000 people may die from smoke related conditions( it is their choice) but I have seen no one die from smoking in my lifetime.
if the conservationist boobs would allow the land to be cleaned and cleared like the government did in the 30's & 40's we wouldn't be having all of these fires and people are putting themselves (it is their choice) closer to these areas where once it was remote.

Eric of the UK, I may be an idiot but I don't take it up the arse from no royal.

People keep moving into rustic areas where wild fires cause them more harm. Dumb smokers keep chucking the still burning cigarettes out car windows.

You may not like it, but I am allergic to it....It's too bad I am not an Anti-American, or I would be pushing for a ban on this......But an illegal ban is still an illegal ban.... And since this is a "rights" issue I will continue to fight for "Rights"..

here is something interesting.......NYC openly disregarding the smoking ban.......LOL

Yes and maybe these new cigarettes will help make up for the stupidity.

Ummmmm, well, it's not me declaring this, it's the people fighting the fires who have figured this out.
And, where the fires are still burning are five to 10 miles or more away from where they started.

I'm guessing that you're not a nurse or a doctor then?

If we take a very rough guess at your age we'll say maybe 40? If so, that'll be 16 million people dead during your lifetime from smoking. Imagine a disease wiping out the whole population of Illinois within 30 years.....

Any ban on anything such as cigerettes and I am not a smoker, is taking rights away, and as for cigerettes being better than perfume as a asthmatic they both affect me the same. I would think that people should have the right to smoke or not smoke the same as wearing what they want or not want. A business owner should have the right to allow smoking or not allow smoking. If people don't like it go to a business that doesn't allow it, then everyone has the right to smoke or not smoke or not go around it or go around it. But our government shouldn't have the right to decide for us.

Well said.....it should be up to the individual who owns any particular business, to decide whether or not they want to allow smoking.

Ok does anybody know really what the hell the effects of this new paper and salt compounds do to the smoker? No they don't, so basically we could all be poisoned because our "haircut" gov. feels that he can tell us not only how to smoke but what should be in the cigarettes we are smoking now too. I guess if I had money power and a cousin to give illegal construction contracts to, then I might too be able to control people's lives as well. For you whiny non-smokers you need to look at the ruined environment around you. I doubt cigarettes were the sole cause of that, take a look at the dumptrucks with their billows of black smoke, the population congestion, radon, technology emitting EMT's, and just us thrashing this planet in every shape form and fashion. Go bitch at the oil companies and every other thing imaginable like you do smokers and we can change many many things
