Sabre museum deal is dead

Jul 3, 2011 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Gilmer Mirror

Plans to bring a second aviation museum to Gilmer are dead. There had been talks with the Friends of the Super Sabre Association to establish a museum at the Gilmer airport to house five variations of the F100 Super Sabre, a fighter plane used for decades and which was used in the Vietnam War.

How embarrassing

Mount Pleasant, TX

When you look at Gilmer; its businesses; what little industry there is here and the city leaders ask, "whom has been involved and where did the gain from these efforts really go?" Many do efforts for the "appearance of community and city" while the gains go to them. Anyone remember any businesses that use to be in town that are now gone because of the ambitions of one person outweighing the good of the business or the law? With all of the issues in the newspaper about Gilmer and its officials is anyone surprised by Davitto's statements about "false statements" being told to the City Officials? Davitto traveled 1600 miles to bring out the "facts and documents" to the City to clear his organizations good name. I'm embarrassed, for Gilmer, that he had to do that to correct wrongs brought unto his organization. My apologies to Mr. Davitto and his organization for the money and time wasted on Gilmer. With this type of business occurring in Gilmer is there any wonder why the town has grown so little in the past 20 years and why its officials stay in the newspapers with questions of wrong doings? This is why so many of the young, motivated, people that come to Gilmer leave and business muddles along with incomes and job opportunities staying low. If the old guard keeps things in their favor they will always gain while the citizens of Gilmer stay in indentured servitude to them. I encourage the young people in town to get involved in local organizations, city meeting and anything else going on in town. Ask questions and do not be afraid to put "City Officials or Do Gooders" on the spot. Ask hard questions and if the answers are fishy put your foot down and do what you can to block their efforts and right the wrongs. These people are all smoke and mirrors and once they realize that they have been discovered the efforts they were once pushing will quietly go away and you will prosper in Gilmer, instead of them.

From the Gilmer Mirror comments on this article. I enjoyed reading them and thought everyone else might also:

My father served with Fox Stephens in World War II as his flight commander in P-47s. My dad went on for 35 years as a fighter pilot for our nation. He flew the F-100 for over 18 years and commanded five F-100 squadrons including three in combat in Vietnam. I am proud to be a part of the Friends of Super Sabre and was equally proud to have it reside at Gilmer due to my dad's association with Fox. They were great friends and brothers. My dad is very dissappointed in how the relationship came to an abrupt end with the City of Gilmer. The Friends of the Super Sabre have money, a strong network and certainly have the resources to bring our ambitions to reality without money or resources from Mr. Dean or the city of Gilmer, which was never our intention. I dare say Fox Stephens would be very dissappointed in how this played out. A real shame for the FSS and the City of Gilmer. Never a good thing to have the ambitions of one person out weigh the best interest of so many good hearted folks. This is a real missed opportunity for everyone involved.

Dear Mr. Jones,

I read your comments and I thank the Lord that we Americans are free to express our opinions and beliefs. Our incredible Military labors daily to protect and preserve this, our 1st Amendment right. Had you attended the Gilmer City Council meeting on Tuesday, June 28th, you would have heard me tell your City Officials that your local boy, Steve Dean was responsible for us leaving your fair city and he is the reason we are searching for a new location. Had you been at the May 24th City Council meeting you would have heard your Steve Dean falsify in public statements about us. Two of his false statements appear in the article above. He was untruthful in the May 24th meeting time and time again. I brought 2 brief cases of documents last Tuesday, documentary proof that what he said was false. His prevarications were wrong and, in my humble opinion, only meant to deceive your City Officials.

We were maligned by your Steve Dean and I made the 1,600 miles round trip to Gilmer to clear our good name. We believe I did that and I came home with my head held high. You sir and the good people of Gilmer have your Steve Dean to scoff at for your loss of our F-100 Museum.

On this July 4th - Happy Birthday America.

Peter B.“Pete” Davitto

Looks like these Retired upper brass's like to throw their weight around to let other entities do their work for them and then wear their shiny brass to dedications to take credit for the projects. I duly respect all retires of our greatest on earth military, but some always try walking on water. I'm glad they were sent home without their ice cream and cake.

This guy traveled 1600 miles to bring out the facts? I flew 1600 miles to Gilmer & drove 1800 miles back seeking the TRUTH from some of the people there. I got mostly lies & people with LOCK JAW, oh yea & talking about the LORD. It is a SAD SACK OF CRAP I know.

Amen to this. Gilmer is the red neck, mullet capital of East Texas. If you want to see pure East Texas ignorance just read their local newspaper and all of the stupidity that goes on in this town with the local "so called" well to do as well as the police, sheriff, county judge, mayors, city managers, etc. Everyone is on some sort of take and they all work to try and keep each other out of trouble.

April you could be correct about the government shut the place down. The rumor I heard was they went broke. Maybe Thomas can inform us on your question.

I just read in the last Gilmer Mirror that Steve Dean was trying to become the County Judge. That's just what we need. Another Gilmerite that ran his business into the ground still trying to run business in Gilmer and then he got caught trying to do funny business with the Sabre Museum. What a JOKE.

Upshur County has a history of electing JOKES in the past. The whole County is a SEPTIC TANK (don't get me wrong they have some SISTER Counties) that are the same. When the tank gets full what do you do? You clean it out right. It is you the voters that will have to clean this tank. Once you do this then plans like this Sabre issue and others my come to your town.
