Ryan Benson does not need nor deserve jail... Although he should not have been behind the whell, if he indeeed was drinking, Jerry should not have been walking in the middle of the road, drunk himself. And his girlfriend should not have let him... Too many small things in this case to punish one kid. Then two lives will be taken and that is not fair. He is there at the vayda's every weeknend helping with chores and Jerry would not want him in jail for this.... Anyonew have thoughts on this????

I am not sure if this is just gossip but was told they were all drinking at the Chinese resturant in Alton Bay. Jerry left drunk and walked. My source says Ryan left to go get him and this tragic accident happened. My question is Was the resturant charged with serving these people to the point of intoxication? The police need to start checking on some of these establishments to see what is going on.

People in Gilmanton need to come to grips with the tragedies that can occur through abuse of alcohol and drugs. We have parents that party with their children, what kind of an example is that? Then we have those that want our law enforcement to "lighten up" turn a blind eye to these issues. Wake up, see the results of substance abuse it is all around us. Our DARE program is a joke, just ask the teacher that runs it. Does Alton circle ring a bell?

Well said Grace. He deserves to spend as much time as the law requires in prison. He killed someone. He killed someone because he had been drinking, and have been using coke.

Look at the last principal the school had. She was in the paper for a DWI. Look at the current guidance conselor she was also in the DWI log. What's the world coming to?

Yes, the info you received is just gossip. Jerry & Ryan were drinking at the Chinese Restraunt in Alton, Jerry's girlfriend went there and picked Jerry up (she was not drinking) to take him home. They had an argument and Jerry decided to walk "back to the chinese restraunt". His girlfriend tried to get him to just go home with her. Evidently Jerry changed his mind about going back to the restraunt and started walking home. Ryan didn't know Jerry was walking, as far as he knew Jerry went home with Katie. And no the restraunt has not been charged with over serving.

People need to take responsibility for their own actions. You can be intoxicated and not show it at the time you buy a drink and then a short time later it's entered into your blood stream and now your really intoxicated. It's the person who ordered the drink knowing how they feel NOT the bartender who doesn't know how the patron feels, unless it is visible.
The bartender is not your mother.

Ryan Benson is a good guy and this was a very tragic event. Jerry Vayda was also a good guy nobody really knows what happened unless they were at the tragic event when it took place. Everyone is so quick to place blame on people the simple fact of the matter is bad things happen to good people. I cant stand people like Grace Matt who feel the need to try to save the world by hiring a cop for every square mile of town.

Lots of good people are drunks. They just need to realize that they have a problem and it is not the world around them.

This was a tragic event, but had people not been drinking and driving we might not be posting on this very sad thread.

I don't want a cop for every sqare mile - but, I also don't want people drinking and driving. I don't want to be on the other end of one of these tragedies that occur when people don't think about these types of consequences.

let me tell youn none of you were there, no one has a right to judge this man other than god, with his frienship with jerry, im sure he has forgin ryan to. no one saw the look the trama in ryans eyes,he has to live everyday with the memory that he killed his best friend, friends from childhood. isnt that pain enough? for that matter why dosent anyone turn the fact to the police 27 minutes to arrive & an adittional 17 minutes for the fire department, once officer hackett arived he offered no help, in fact didnt even ask if jerry was breathing, once the rescue arrived, the were unprepared, no blankets, and no certified parimedic, the ones that showed up in pj's could not lift jerry from the ground, so maybe a little more of the issue falls on alton! we have the sadest fire rescue and police that is imaginable, one lady drives around in her white grand am with the plate iresqu what a joke, i look at her with desgust, way to represent altons finest, i would not piss on anyone of them if they were on fire, the fire department would take to long to get there. ryan will do anything for you if asked, kill your friend then be judged, feel the pain and ask yourself, how much does this hurt!

Is the lesson learned large enough to not drink and drive ever again? Is it clear enough to say no to drugs? Is it painful enough to ask for a soda instead of a beer?
Was this the bottom - or - just another floor on the elevator ride to the bottom?
It is a larger than life sign post that is for sure. But, so many fail to pay attention to the sign posts. Pointing the finger outward to others is just another piece of denial. It is always easier to point the finger outward instead of toward the actions to which it belongs.
Lawyers are a big help in convoluding the truth and the truth of the matter is that a terrible mistake cost a huge price.

That is true that children learn by example. I agree with the posts about the examples set by (Professionals ??) at the school. I agree - it is good that they are gone, what is sad is how many chose to IGNORE the unacceptable behavior and even worse, protect it.

This situation is a terrible outcome of a mistake that is made every day. Everyone pays the price. Yes, we are a sleepy little town - maybe too sleepy from the haze of all the potsmoke.

HEY DOES ANYONE IN THIS TOWN CARE ABOUT STATUTORY RAPE? THERE ARE PEOPLE THAT BELIEVE RECTOR AND THE CHIEF...MOSTLY THE CHIEF, DROPPED THE BALL WITH THE CASE OF A 21 YEAR OLD MAN RAPING A 13 YEAR OLD GIRL OVER THE SUMMER. THE CHIEF TOLD THE D.A. THE 13 YEAR OLD VICTOM WAS UNTRUTHFUL IN HIS PAST CONTACTS WITH HER. HOWEVER HE FORGOT TO TELL THE D.A. THAT HIS DAUGHTER CONVINCED THE SAME GIRL TO BRING BOOZE INTO THE SCHOOL SO THEY COULD GET DRUNK TOGETHER AT SCHOOL. APPARENTLY, THE CHIEF BLAMES THE YOUNGER GIRL, A FRESHMEN FOR HIS INOCENT DAUGHTER'S INDISCRETION. BY THE WAY I BELIEVE HIS DAUGHTER IS A JUNIOR WHO THEN DROVE HERSELF HOME DRUNK AND WAS NEVER CHARGED WITH DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE. IMAGINE LETTING A RAPEST GO, AND THEN PUNISHING A YOUNG VICTOM CAUSE YOU CANT EXCEPT THE FACT THAT YOUR DAUGHTER HAS ISSUES WITH MEN, BOOZE AND DRUGS. ITS PRETTY SAD BUT IT OUGHT TO BE AN EXCITING SUMMER ON THAT LAKE FOR OTHER YOUNG GIRLS. MAYBE SOMEONE WHO READS THIS AND HAS A DAUGHTER OF THERE OWN AND QUITE POSSIBLY EVEN HAS THE GUTS WILL PICK UP THE PHONE AND CALL THE CHIEF AND ASK HIM SOME QUESTIONS ABOUT ALL THIS. CAUSE HE WONT TAKE OUR CALLS.

this is so true, d.a. jim carrol dropped the charges against the rapest and the victom, my daughter and our family were never contacted since august for our imput. if our attorney had not called the d.a.'s office we would never have even known. i asked why and carrol told ME that he dropped the charges cause the chief says my daughter was not credible in his dealings with her in the past. i asked if the chief mentioned this incident between my daughter and his daughter and he replied the chief never brought it up. my opinion and my opinion only is the chief did not want the incident where he buried a drunk driving charge for his daughter to possibly come up during the rape trial. how else could he justify saying a 13 year old girl was not credible. and what minor child gives a bulletproof statement?

hey look, i am not a police hater...never even read a blog or forum before this. just maybe wishing someone at the newspaper or someone with clout actually truely cares about the comunity up there. i live in mass. my daughter is with me now so she is safe but are all your daughters safe? here is the article from your local newspaper or did i make this up. its funny how some of you people hold this guy in the regard due a god. hes a cop, a human capable of committing a crime as we all are. and sure he's protecting his daughter as we all probably would... but at what expense? seems the cost is pretty high here. not only does my daughter get robbed of justice but he also put the safety of all your daughters at risk to protect his own and in the cover-up his crimes.

Francis Marden, 22, of 14 Hill Road, Tilton, entered no plea to a charge of felonious sexual assault (statutory rape) involving a minor Gilmanton girl in August and the case was bound over to Belknap County Superior Court for possible indictment. The defendant was released on $20,000 personal recognizance bail.

is this proof enough. maybe someone has the guts to help me hold these police and courts accountable. or maybe after one of your daughters gets raped you will find the courage to stand up.

i'll post my name and number next time. the reason i didnt this time is i am sure some of you who are hypnotized by the buffoons would harass me. at any rate the summer is getting nearer by the day and this guy will be down the lake feeding your daughters booze and roofies and we all know what will happen then. lets see who stands up first by coming out of hiding that this bullshit site provides.

and rector told me he could not give me copies of the police logs up there cause the station does not have a computer. is that crazy? or somebody ask rector how he wanted to charge me a fee for the documents. i asked how much a buck each and he replied it would be much more than that. this maggot wanted to charge me a large fee to provide me with docs that not only are public record but were in regards to the case where my daughter is the victom of a rape. imagine this is what you people are paying their saleries for. not protect and serve but protect themselves.

So, what's Ryan doing nowadays? He is NOT any better of a person. He got away with it, and now thinks he is stronger than ever.
