Why do they do these burns during the windy dry season?

I don't know, Concerned. That's a darn good question. It's like someone wrote it on the calendar 8 months ago no one has the ability to walk over to that calendar and erase it. That's our USFS for ya. Our government does some things really well, other things not so much. Ask all those folks up in Los Alamos who went through the forest service "controlled burn" some years back. You just have to know some government employee looked at the calendar and said...well, it says we're supposed to have a controlled burn today so I guess we have to do it. Then walks out to his car trying not to lose his hat in the wind. Lets just hope not too many people lose their homes in this one.

Just because it is dry doesn't mean the forests aren't still in need of being thinned out by burning. If they hold off, and the dry windy weather continues, the fire will just be that much bigger. They have rules in place about canceling scheduled prescribed burns in windy conditions (which was necessary after the 1999 Los Alamos fiasco).

I think I smell diesel fumes from a D8 cutting a firebreak now.

If the forests need it now, they needed it in November and December. Humidity and tempurature are big dictators of just how readily something will burn. Spring in NM is one of the WORST times.

There was controlled burns last winter. It seems like out in the Burros gets a burn a couple times a year anymore. How about a little winter logging where the slag is removed? How about a little winter logging where the bug-ridden and dead trees are taken out? How about some sanity?

It's always like that, some guy with really cool shades on sitting behind a desk making command decisions. Kinda like an armchair quarterback.
