It's too easy to get a license and too easy to keep it.

Cars should have a card reader in them that activates the starter when a valid driver's license is inserted.

This guy's 85 years old. How will he get to the Dr., get groceries, pick up prescriptions, etc. He obviously does not have someone to help him now, hence the two accidents. It's so easy to say "Yank his license." So what is he supposed to do? Just sit at home and die of starvation because he is no longer allowed to drive?

He obviously has signs of azheimers. How does he know to take care of himself much less drive? This is a growing epidemic that many people are not aware of. We need to find a resolution for the elderly quick! Its going to be us someday, someday sooner for some! God Bless these poor families that had to endure this pain. Bless us all....

You are exactly right on the money. DWI is a money maker so the state won't do anything. Anyway anyone can drive legal or not. Unless the police know the driver and know that they are driving without a license no one would know. The cops are too busy talking on their cell phones and holding hands in the parking lot of Jose Barros to notice anything.(The Squad Car Sweeties) Just think about it, too much happens in this small town of just over 10,000 people.

"Careless driving"!Z@#! He killed a young man! What the !@#@! is going on in NM? What about manslaugher?

Take his license and his truck! Because not having a license never stopped anybody from driving. That's the least they can do...And they should have done that the first time he was in an accident.

Yet everytime I'm in Grant County, I notice they have more cops than people...

Yes he did not have help before. But the family has taken over the situation.

I sure hope the mean-spirited responses put on here don't represent my community as a whole. People don't just realize one day that they shouldn't drive. I've had many great-grandparents, grandparents, great-uncles, etc. who have had to come to the realization they should no longer drive. It was not easy for any of them. A couple of them caused accidents (minor, thank God) and we intervened to take their keys. It was a very difficult thing to do as losing your car means losing your freedom to travel as you please. It is quite obviously time this man needs the intervention but he was very shaken by this accident and certainly didn't mean to take the man's life. Locking him up would just cost the courts (all of us) and make a bad situation even worse.

Those who say the elderly should not drive obviously don't know that each person's body and mind deteriorate at different rates. There are 80 and 90-something year old people who drive just fine. It should be a case-by-case basis with a close eye kept on the elderly by their family members and the state.

Oh and those bashing the DWI laws don't seem to understand that NM has realized for years that there is a problem and has some of the toughest laws in the nation. We are very innovative with solutions, too, with the interlock devices, state-subsidized options for safe transportation, and a thorough advertising campaign that you can't go a week without noticing.
