Recently a lady with the last name “Reneau” passed away. Reneau is an old and respected name around here. There are businesses with that name on the sign out front. It’s pronounced “RIN-oh”.
Well except at KWED (you know,“The Voice Of Seguin”) where it is pronounced,“REN-ow”. That went on for five days. This week it was Boehnke , another popular, oft heard German name. It’s “BANE-kee”, it is not “BEN-e-kee”. This has been going on for years at the local radio station. Many German ladies of a certain age are named Meta. That’s,“MAY-tah”, not “MET-ah”. This is invariably in the contest of someone’s obituary. Likely as not, the only time their name made it on the air. Why not give them the respect of pronouncing it correctly? How hard would it be to ASK an older member of the community BEFORE going on the air and freaking guessing? How time consuming would it be to call the funeral home or a relative and getting an accurate opinion on the deceased’s preferred pronunciation? You weren’t busy researching corruption at city hall or the county courthouse were you? Then try to do this one little thing that you might be qualified for, if only you would exert the effort. |

Simon before you decide to speak, perhaps you should do a little research yourself. There are many people in this community that pronounce their names a certain way only.Obviously, you are the German Historian in this town and seem to know everything.I guess they struck your nerve.Perhaps when they pronounce your name someone will think you are Hispanic/Jamaican (Si Mon!) Oh NO!

Joe,
Thanks for your thoughtful response but apparently you've never actually never listened to 1580. |

We're always happy to make a correction. We make a point to call the funeral home anytime a name is in doubt. I think we pronounced the name Boehnke the way the family pronounces it.
Simon, you sound like a delightful guy. I would like to meet you sometime, and thanks for listening to AM 1580, KWED. dd |

Simon is delightful and I'm sure you would enjoy his company.
He's in La Gloria almost every day that ends in "Y". |
