I agree with Mr. Souply. Vernon Lesner Jr is going to be allowed to earn and income during this year and I don't see where he was ordered any restitution. Taxpayers, open your wallets yet again!

At least it wasn't a real bomb that he threw in the trash can. And he didn't shoot anybody afterwards.

Appears the court doesn't take arson as serious so we will let the criminal out of jail to spread his talent.

What an insulting sentence for everyone affected. My sister was a sophomore there when this happened and it really changed her last couple years of high school. The school is still not fixed and students have to sit through construction noise and paint fumes all day. Not an environment conducive to learning.

What this kid does NOT realize is he has cost a school system a huge amount of money that schools do not have to give up these days. They have to pay a huge amount for insurance out of every years bugets. What does he have to give up? NOTHING. This judge should have thrown the book at him. Made it hard on him for sometime... Made him responseable for his actions!!!!!!! This is a huge problem in our world today. People do what they want and have no accountability for it.. No matter what the result is to others or how much it costs... This is so wrong. And to the guy that said at least he didn't throw a real bomb!!!The kid did 2 million dollars worth of damage!!!!! Would you like to have to pay this?? Maybe you could give him your address and let him come and throw (only) a smoke bomb into your home.. Let your insurance, that you pay for, pay for the damage and then sit and watch while your premium goes up. All because some guy just wanted to throw a smoke bomb into YOUR house...
Does this change your thoughts at all?? I sure hope so..

A conviction for a crime, including weapons related, in or against an Indiana Private or Public school should carry a mandatory prison sentence.

Has our legal system become afraid of punishing criminals? People are not being held accountable for their actions, we are becoming an "It's not my fault." society.

WORK RELEASE? HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN FLOGGED AND PUT ON A ROCK PILE FOR THE 8 YEARS. THEN HIS INCOME SHOULD BE GARNISHED FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE OR UNTIL THE MONEY IS PAID OFF.

Rehabilition. I'm surprised the judge didn't take him home since he thought so highly of him.

Yeah, from the looks of the posts on forums like this one, we really need to invest in our school systems. Poor spelling, poor grammar, and worst of all, poor examples for the coming generations. Not referring necessarily to just this post - but the ones where people imply that violence is okay and the name-calling runs rampant. I realize forums aren't necessarily the place for writing an English composition, but at least take the time to try to spell some of your words correctly. If you don't know how to spell the big words, don't use them.

It was real enough to cause a fire, risk the lives of students and school staff, and cost the taxpayers a couple million tax dollars.

As bad as the effect turned out to be, I think we should keep in mind that this was intended as a harmless prank.

Kids have always done things like this. Sometimes, people die as a result. Even so, I don't think we should be so quick to ruin this guy's life, over what was really just typical adolescent behavior.

The student should have to do Community Service for at least 5 years; after 'sitting in a cell' for at least a month. This is NOT just 'adolescent' behavior. By the time a person becomes an adolscent they should have been taught that any behavior has consequences.
