"Gerber said it's important to recruit desirable merchants so that commercial real estate openings don't just get filled by the first business owner to step up and sign a lease. "

Kind of like Big Lots stepping in to take over the recently closed Big Lots?

Novato has always been the place where restaurants go to die.

Oh good and 1/2 percent sales tax vote when you have a guy who can't even rent or sell the Theater. Yep we will keep voting for you. Was this the same guy who wants to cut Redwood blvd down to one lane to build ? Maybe he had a hand in the wasted money on the city hall or the pool at Hamilton. This stuff get's worse by the minute. just look at the sale that went by his nose of the building we are paying rent for 750,000 per year and they bought three buildings for 10 million and now want to sell us 75 Rowland for 12 million WOW

Oh yeah!

The thug families they want to install on the shrunken Redwood Blvd will surely encourage really nice restaurants. That eyesore Theater would surely be an attraction. Maybe it will become a homeless encampment!!!!

Live crime after dinner.

Well done! I love this idea..

Petaluma is the example I was going to use. They've created an atmosphere for themselves in their downtown that we simply don't have, so I usually find myself going north or south instead of staying local.

Curious to see how this turns out..

Restaurants are a key part of that equation, Walden said.

"I'm going to live the rest of my life here and, dammit, I want a good place to eat," she said with a laugh. Walden wants a good place to eat !! Hope she don't need a wheelchair parking spot as her brain talks like she does. Maybe one of the stupid trees will fall on her car while she is eating . Are you kidding me with the fools who did downtown, the three million dollar colored cement, the parking spaces and the garbage stores along with whole foods. Have you been there lately ? I was there today and give them one year SEE YA !!!! Fresh My --- Pay them about 100 k and it will never work for this town as you need to start with a plan and brains and neither were done here

Here is a big problem to all of this.

Novato Police are known throughout the northbay as being intimidating, out to catch you, and just generally harrassing.

Let's face it, people go out to dinner, have a few drinks and drive home. Yes they are buzzed a bit and are riding on the legal limit of .08 but they aren't trashed to the point they are driving on the side walks mowing people down.

Then enters Novato PD, they pull people over because they see them leaving a restuarant and figure this is like shooting fish in a barrel, that is their cause to pull you over. Next thing you know, your support of downtown Novato has turned into one expensive DUI.

It is not worth it until Novato PD tries to support businesses rather than hurting businesses.

This is common knowledge, everyone knows and feels the Novato PD presence so they rather just stay home.

Yes.

Novato is good for sleeping and non-upscale shopping malls. That is about it.

Kind of sad that Petaluma has more vibrant culture and nightlife that Novato.

Trying to fix this town up is like polishing a turd. You can polish it all day and all night - in the end it will always still just be a turd.

Petaluma has a population of something like 55,000 and Novato around 50,000. So does San Rafael.

What Novato lacks is CULTURE. It's a great place to live, but you wouldn't want to visit there.

Petaluma has over 150 places to eat only ten minutes up the road, and they are all at a lower price point than any comparable eatery in Novato. Talk to any number of people who have sunk their life savings on the shoals of a Novato restaurant! Novato is short on good places to eat because people in Novato don't eat out in Novato. They go elsewhere... the food's better and the tab is lower.

Sorry, but everybody knows Whole Paycheck got snookered into a contract and HAD to open that Novato store. You could shoot a cannon through the place and not hit a soul. Now they've got kids standing out on the street corners waving big signs trying to get people to walk into the place. Good fooking luck! They'll be gone soon enough. So much for Whole Paycheck "revitalizing downtown!"

As for restaurant critics... foey! Boca is an overblown, overpriced, overly pretentious, noisy place with a menu full of fancy-named boring food. A steak is a steak is a steak. Keep your arrugula and wasabi mayonaise! If you want a steak, try Cattlemens up the road. No frou-frou, just a good hunk of meat.

We desperately need a new IN-N-OUT at Carl's Jr. site which is always an empty fast food restaurant.

The city of Novato could hire the mayor....the big expert...Shoebomb! He's an expert on everything, just ask him.

Perhaps he and his buddy Howtheydolt could open a baloney shop...

I, for one, will begin using this forum for restaurant info instead of Yelp.

where did the money come from to hire her? We have plenty of restaurants -- The Red Lobster and Olive Garden left under Gerber's watch. How many more do we need?

First the 20,000 survey, now this. Couldn't we have saved a police position with all these frivilous expenses?

Rod Gerber is hired by the city council --he's an at will employee. His claim to fame was bringing Ikea to Emeryville. Our only bookstore closed in 2001 and he's done nothing to bring in a new one. I don't see as he's done much of anything to build commerce in the city. Whole Foods and Trader Joes came from citizen's contacting them, not his doing anything.

No, you must give more money every time the people who know best demand it.

If you don't give them the money, the will start firing police and teachers.

Got it?

Just give them what they want.

Let's see.

For $15,000 a year, I can come up with a bunch of names of people who open and close restaurants all the time, too.

Heck, I'll even do it for $14,500!

Waste of money. The problem with restaurants coming to Novato is the impossible City Hall treatment. Throw out the red carpet and you will see more places.
On the other hand there are some very nice operators doing business in Novato. They are not that hard to identify and they should be appreciated by the city not insulted with a story like this.

This idea proves that we have a very inefficient marketplace. Capitalism should have brought entrepreneurs to Novato not a head hunter. It seems to me bribery money for would be restauranteurs would be a better approach. It would probably work well.
