I chose to move to Georgetown for the "small-town" atmosphere. Since moving here in 2000,(when Gtown still had the air of moral and personal responsibility), crime has increase, the amount of traffic has tripled. Gang and drug activity have increased, a new mentality has moved in,(not a good mentality at that). It is so sad and disappointing. Our high school has become more over-crowded than ever before. Teachers now have classrooms filled with 24 to 28 students. The students are facing a hostile environment, one filled with gangs, drugs and physical confrontations. We are now hearing that the new 9th grade campus, which was originally supposed to be tiered each year, will not. There is not enough in the budget to continue the 2nd high school. Who should we hold accountable? The very people who voted in Gary Nelon. The people who sat idly by and allowed more commercial industry in this town, who allowed more low-income housing and multi-family units to be established, and who didn't have the guts to push aside "political correctness" for a better community in which families could have a decent environment in which to raise their children.
I hope the new mayor will take the community ills, the rise of crime, and the moral decay of Georgetown into consideration, and not allow the almighty dollar to rule his conscience.
As far as keeping Austin "weird", keep the weirdness in Austin and far away from people who have morals, personal accountability, and want a decent town to raise their family in.
