My husband and I are wanting to add a fairly large deck onto our house. Would any of you have recommendations and/or warnings of who to use or not to use? Any personal experiences with the companies or handy men would be greatly appreciated.

I would make only a few suggestions, don't give them any moneys until you are satisfied with their work. pay for materials your self. be observant of whats going on,communicate with builder. good luck.

Whatever you do DON'T use Dave MonHollen. He's a con artist that will rip you off.

I haven't used him to build a deck but Andy VanHoose can do anything. He has put in tile floors in my home and he totally renovated a bathroom in another property I own. He's just one of those people who has the ability and knowledge to do anything. The name of his business in MV Project Services. Perhaps the most important thing is he is completely honest and trustworthy. Give him a call and he will tell you exactly what he can do

I would suggest building your own if you can. Buying your materials will keep the costs down that contractors like to add as a service. I understand why, but if you have your own truck, it will save in the long run. Also, shop for materials and try to get good materials. So much of the treated lumber today is cut from young trees and feel as if they just left the treatment area, you know they will warp given some heat and air. Decks are mostly basic building steps with anchor bolts and braces and if you are not putting a roof on top, the cuts are cumbersome. Plenty of DIY samples online and books at stores. You may have to purchase a few tools, but then again, you have them if another project comes around. Again, if you are physically capable and even somewhat handy, a deck can be a fun project. The codes I know of are to be sure to make your steps at a reasonable pitch and include handrails for inspection if you plan on selling your house in the future. I learned the hard way with having a deck built. After seeing the process and completed project, I would have rather had control and done it myself.

Sorry, should say the cuts are not cumbersome!

Thanks Dave. Our problem is we dont have time to do it ourselves. I wish we did. I have helped build two decks soI know the trouble and fun it can be especially when it is a family project. I also wish we had a truck or knew someone who did. The deck we are wanting to build will be a 15 foot by 36 foot deck which will go in after our new pool is built in late April. I really appreciate your help. Thanks!
