Have been there and done that. Word has it that their best player decided not to play his senior year because of all the crap that happens with the program. Sad for him he doesnt get to enjoy his senior year if it is true!!!

My son played football and baseball for SCHS and let me tell you they had very long practices even on the weekends that by the time he got home after practice all he had time to do was take a shower then eat and do his homework, and there were times he was up till midnight doing it. They can't even get a job because the coaches will not allow them to. With baseball the parents are out so much time and money doing fundraisers for the booster club to have money. You have to be at the U.K football games 6hrs before the game even starts so there is times you have to be there at 6 am and not get to leave until around 3pm or so. You have to work the home UK football games & basketball making pizza's, then Toyota Classic, and Amazon and other things as well plus concession. This is a lot for one parent to do if they have other children. Also with baseball you have to pay almost $500.00 for you child to go to Florida, that's not counting what you are out by the time the rest of the family goes, plus pay for a room, gas, and any extra. So with all the work that the parents do why doesn't the booster club atleast pay for the boys way to Florida? Not to mention after doing all that work your child is not guaranteed to make the team.Everyone talks about McKee and Billy Hicks but Willard is involved in it too look at all the money that the baseball team gets from the parents and he has no respect for either the boys or the parents.

My child played two different sports at SCHS, and itís a lot of politics and the fundraising is crazy. It does suck sometimes you donít even get to see your child play!

I agree with most of this as I also have a child that plays baseball and football. It's alot of work but it's what my son loves therefor we make sacrifices. He gets his homework done, gets good grades AND works! If you want to complain it will go on deaf ears. No one cares what YOU think. Tell your son he can't play if you don't like it. That's the bottom line. If you don't want to do the fundraisers, then don't do them. Tell your son to get a job and enjoy life since you think it's so miserable. I have three children and I make it work. All three are in sports at different schools. One even plays league ball. Why? Because they love it and that's what they want to do. Is it a pain in the butt, you bet it is but they love it and it keeps them out of trouble. It's part of my life and complaining about it isn't going to change it so put on your big girl pants and deal with it or have your son quit the team. Us as parents don't want to listen to you whine! We all have to do it!

Don't bother coming to the meeting tomorrow night. You will have to bring your checkbook and sign up for fundraising...if you show up, we will know who you are as you will be the one complaining the whole time just better to just stay home, thanks!

Actually, the young man you are talking about is not playing because he wants to enjoy his senior year. He chose not to play ball because he would not be playing in college and therefore didn't want to spend the time and energy baseball requires during his senior year. He is a great player but doesn't want to play college ball. End of story. I hope he enjoys his senior year! Baseball is so time consuming and if you aren't planning on playing in college, he has the right idea. Have fun your senior year!

Well I am the father of the young man who is not playing and only part of your response is correct. He did want to enjoy his senior year and is not planning on playing in college. There is much more to this story that doesnt need to be discussed on topix!!! Ask some of the other current baseball parents how they feel to get your answers you are looking for.

For all of you who thought that I was complaining about doing the fundraiser YOUR DEAD WRONG! I am just putting it out there for everyone to know how the baseball program works. Because the parents and the kids work their A$$ off to be treated like a nobody. And for REAlITY and BASEBALL MOM you know, I have way more kids then you and all my kids if they are old enough play sports even in the league program as well. BASEBALL MOM you can't even tell me that you don't complain at all about the program because every person up their complained some point in time even myself. Why should a child put so much time and energy into it when they know that a College recruit is not going to come scout Willards talent.
the issue

Georgetown, KY

#10 Feb 27, 2012
the issue is the coach and how he treats the kids as well as his coaching ability. The team won 6 games in state last year and SCHS is the largest school in KY. I think most parents would throw a party if a new coach was hired

I know your son and am a baseball parent. He is a great kid and my son thinks he is a hell of a ball player. We are sad that he is not playing and completely understand why. Willard is a hard coach to deal with. He is downright rude and treats the boys like crap. If my son didn't love the game so much and didn't want to play in college I would not be sorry he quit...but he loves it and is willing to deal with the coaching issues. That is the decision he made on his own. I wish he was going to enjoy playing his last year but I know in my heart it will be miserable. I just hope it's worth it in the end for him because to us, he is all that matters. Your son made the decision that was right for him. I hate that that is the decision he made but I agree that it's no ones business to discuss it on topix. He's a great kid and I wish him the best! A new coach is needed so great kids like yours don't have to quit. They can play because they love the game....
Speak up

Georgetown, KY

#12 Feb 28, 2012
If there are so many parents and players that feel that way, why dont they speak up!!! Nothing will change unless they do. I the players parents pretty well and I do know they had a meeting with the coach and covington. If other people feel the same way, then they should also speak up!!!

They only won 6 games last year?? Pretty sure they had losing seasons every other year he has coached as well. This is the largest school in the state and there is a lot of talent in this town and many are no longer, or will never be, on that ballfield. The only question needed answered is...WHY IS HE STILL THE COACH?

Unfortunately, the answer is probably the same as why we do not have a second high school...it isn't about the kids at SCHS...it is all about the coaches!

Several parents who's children know longer play baseball because of the coaches have spoken up. Has anything changed ...No! As far as those that are currently playing their parents won't speak up in fear of their son not getting any playing time. Yes that is what happens when the coaches take it out on the kids by making them sit out. I had a meeting with Covington and all he does is stand behind Willard so you don't get anywhere there.

For obvious reasons, everyone is scared to say something in fear of the effect it will have on there child on the sports field. What a way to run a program!!!

It isnt about player development or wins and losses with the school. Has to be something else going on. Hell Ive come and watched a few games and they are not taught proper mechanics at all!!
