Topix is only useful when those who post are honest and do not use this as a medium for spreading lies. Luckily, each and every computer that connects to the internet has a unique number assigned to it called and IP Address. The address below leads a website with step-by-step instructions so that anyone can use the IP address of a poster figure out exactly where any post on topix came from. Enjoy...

Sorry your wrong.
Posters here can not be traced, that wiki applies to a very limited scope.

Also unless you have a static IP which you have to pay extra for, that IP address changes every time you connect to the internet, so even if you could trace posts, as most you will get their service provider, and maybe town they live in.

You are correct. It also clearly states that you can not find out someones true identity without a court order.

Sounds like you are more of a troublemaker than anything else. Why worry about what others are doing on Topix?

Your so dumb. Knowing what Approximate city a post came from ,IS NOT the same thing as knowing the name of the poster. The info on the link you provided, specifically states that a court order is needed for the actual name. And judges rarely issue court orders for public forums. A little thing called "Probable Cause" is needed, and that is for extreme cases, not where a poster has called so and so a naughty name. If your so concerned, stop trying to stir up more trouble by giving false information, and try to make your lil corner of the world better, instead of a vast public forum.

That is in no way a trace. It might show you a city an email come from etc but no way it could show you where a topix post came from or by who.The only person that can see that is topix itself and a court order is required to get that info released.
you must be very new on the internet to think this is how it works

Irony:

"Your so dumb." I love it when people use this sentence. If you don't get why, I hope you can at least say "you want fries with that?"

ok ... let's say you could get the IP of a poster, which you can't here on Topix. That would point to the closest "gateway" only. To find out who that person was, you would need to get the authentication logs of the ISP to see who was using that gateway at that particular time.

If it's a small ISP, you could possibly hack into the authentication server, and download the logs. They're stored in unencrypted text files. Larger ISPs use more complicated authentication routines which send the information to a database file via tabular data stream. I can read these streams, but it requires a sophisticated sniffer physically attached to the ISP's network in most cases.

Some game companies send their authentication and game data over unsecured network, but not large ISPs.

On top of all this, it's no big deal to "spoof" an IP to make it seem as if you're logging in from somewhere else. You can do it with a couple clicks in under 5 minutes, and it takes no brains whatsoever. Just follow the instructions available on any cracker/hacker website. If you really want to get sneaky, you get yourself about a dozen accounts on "honey pot" machines, and a couple dozen on free Unix boxes in different parts of the world. Honey pots are servers which security admins use to catch hackers. Ironically, I have been able to use them to mask my identity on several occasions. Good luck trying to talk some tight assed security admin into letting you see his/her honey pot logs. Most won't even admit they have them, and in some cases, go to great lengths to disguise their existence.

so yeah ... there are some scary people here on Topix/Georgetown. Some are scary because they're so fucking stupid. Some are scary because they're psychotic. Some are scary because they are stuck in some religious na-na-land. Some are scary because they can own your digital ass ;-)

20/20 just had a segment on tracing IP address on Topix in GA and a mean consistant poster was taken to court and sued and the guy that was defamed won a huge $$ lawsuit against the poster.
