Why are they always brought up during council meetings? Does city council hate firefighters? Theres plenty of other areas that can be cut. Maybe cutting city council's pay vs the men and women that risk their lifes everyday. Any thoughts?

I completely agree. The fire department if one of the few departments that is fully staffed and instead of trying to fully staff other departments the council talks about reducing the fire staff. It's all about the firefighters that were added by the Safer grant, which allowed the city to hire 9 more firefighters so there would be 4 of them on a truck. This meets national safety requirements of having 2 outside if 2 go inside. The problem is due to sick and vacation time trucks rarely go out with 4 men/women on the truck. Bottom line, some of the the council would rather compromise the safety of firefighters than raise taxes, if that is what is necessary to pay for them. BTW, the police department is short over 20 officers and the council won't hire any more officers and they also were talking about reducing uniform allowance. Worse, the told the new chief they might not buy radios even though the old radios were no longer made and they couldn't get replacement parts. This council is pathetic

It's hard for citizens ( me included ) to understand the job of firefighters. What we see is lots of guys on the truck for insignificant calls.

We also see firefighters at the restaurants a lot (not as much as before) and at the grocery store together buying food for the station.

It's just a hard job to understand, that's all.

When they are truly needed, we see their heroism, but that doesn't happen often. I have no opinion on firefighters, I'm just stating what the public sees.

Yeah I think firefighters should work a 24 hour shift with no food to eat...and if my house is on fire I would hate if they showed up. That's one of the worst observations I've ever heard...thank god you don't do surveillance.

Yep. I am just stating what people see. Didn't say that it was reality. Perception is often way off.

So the public sees that firefighters go out to eat shouldnt be allowed to? Ain't that called a lunch break? Doesn't every job in America give lunch breaks? Yep pretty sure it does so it makes no sense to condemn firefighters for eating on their lunch break. Big difference between emergency service workers and people that have other jobs while they are on lunch. Emergency services workers have to leave on a moments notice even if their food jus came to them to go help or save someone they don't know from Adam. While other can sit and enjoy their meal with no interruptions. And as for only being a hero very little of them time. Well at least one serious medical issue or car wreck happens every day in gtown and unless you have the proper training to take care of these patients (as most gtown firefighters have many ems training hours) then you could easily kill this patient. So actually they perform as heros majority of their days on the job.

Maybe your perception would be different if while the firefighters were in the restaurant someone choked on their food, or if there was a fire in the grocery store while they are there. Believe it or not, the presence of a ladder company in Lex. recently stopped a domestic assault until the PD arrived to arrest the guy. They just drove over and never had to get out of the truck to stop the violence. Wonder if she felt like the firefighters should have been sitting in the station waiting for a run to come in.
Seems funny that our society has evolved to expect provisions for public safety, yet so many people don't want to have the professional staff to provide it. Go up and talk to the firefighters when you see them out. Get to know them. Ask them about their job. Few firefighters are bashful when given the opportunity to explain to you what they are doing, or prepared to do, for you and others every day. I believe that the more the FD interacts with the public they serve, the better service they will provide.

The police & fire dept are the largest group of voters who have relatives ALL over Scott County. When it's an election year, the popo & fire push for whatever they can get. Without their votes, it's a hard couple of years.
As always, it is political strategy.

Find it very hard to believe that firefighters would elect council men and women that always bring them up every meeting, always trying to freeze or cut their pay, and always try to cut their staff. And a few years back each firefighter got cheated out of thousands of dollars in overtime. The state labor board ruled in their favor and they are just now getting their overtime pay. So yea I'm sure it the firefighters and their families that are picking this council. Sorry your wrong. Try again.

This conversation demonstrates how damn dumb the average person in Georgetown really is....in every community in the United States firefighters are local heroes and here a bunch of dumbass people complain they eat lunch. A sad commentary on Georgetown in my opinion

Now there looking for money fund certain thing for the fire dept.
Actually it would save the city over half a million dollars the first year alone if Georgetown became fire based EMS. So there's your money right there. And second GSCEMS is great. Nothing against them. But it's cause of certain people in politics of georgetown that are tied to GSCEMS that reap the benefits of the money the EMS system makes, they would lose their mind if that EMS system made only county runs and not city runs. Their run volume would fall drastically and so would profits. And since a lot of people in the politics of Georgetown are money hungry, they would go crazy if they made a penny less.

Why don't they comment on sheriff department and police department. I see them in Lexington in their cars shopping. Driving them home. Eating at restaurants and leave them running while their are inside eating so their car will be cool when they come out. Wat other job has the citizens pay for your gas and give u a company car to do their personal errands! There are other ways to cut money. Mayor and council need to open their eyes. That's pitiful!!!!!!!!!!

The City Counsel and Mayor are doing everything they can to destroy Georgetown. Georgetown is growing at a considerable rate with more and more taxes being paid each year. The city uses these funds for everything other than making Georgetown a better place.

As a City grows in population money MUST be invested back into the city to welcome more jobs and manufacturing to continue growth. The "Old Money" in Georgetown are against much of the growth and push to keep money from being invested into the proper areas in an effort to slow it down.

Another thing, if you pay attention you will see ALL major developments involve 2-3 different people who are ALL connected! Development wise you cannot get anything done in Georgetown with out Lusby getting his unfair share.

Needless to say Georgetown is corrupt like many other small towns across this country. The Taxpayers must take action to bring down the corruption!!!

If you follow the city budget process you would know that the city budget is almost $8 million less than it was 5 years ago. The city is going to hell because the council won't put money in police, fire and other needed services. This council is pathetic
