I am responding to Gary's post. From what I understand the graves are also under Hwy 27 and into the school yard. I don't know about you but I would not want my relatives'graves to be desecrated, which is what has happened. Let's make it right for them. Identify them and give them a proper burial. How could the people of this community years ago have moved the gravestones and not the bodies? It's inconceivable!

Yeah ..proper burial??? I agree with you FWIW (now they say NOT under US27..but I wonder...)..but...they will be buried at the MRE cemetery in one MASS grave when its all said and done according to the Berne tri weekly....talk about desecration IMO.

Ohh and WHY move the headstones and not the bodies waaay back when?? Easy...$$$$ It was Cheaper!Just like the mass burial IMHO.

Its all about appearances in Berne.

The Swiss way!!

This graves go back to the founding of the city which is around 1860. It is somewhat of a miracle that any were found as by this time nature should have reduced the body to dust. In those days bodies were buried in wooden caskets secured only by nails and subject to the environment. This property was sold to the city in 2001 upon the death of the owner. The issue of graves at this point was really a conjecture with wide disagreement as to even an existence of a grave. Apparently over years any record or accounting was completely lost. For most in this Swiss community the discovery came with surprise. Which was a significant reason for the dig to begin with. This will probably become a historical site.

the people who are responsable for this monstrasatie be built the money people and they know who they are the one,s who run this town ought to be a shamed of themselves building a tower on top of a grave yard that was there they knew it was there the whole time back when the service station was there there has to be some relatives who know who these deceased people are why don,t they take the money and find out who the living are and give these people the burial they deserve tear down that thing and find the graves there and under the highway and over in the school yard is that why they stopped tearing down the school

i worked in that building changing oil and detailing cars in 2000.my boss rented the building from a neuenscwander lady, when she died i believe her son inherited a bunch of land she owned, the city was quick to buy the property from him and the property the police station is on now. We knew there was bodies there and two old in ground oil tanks so we didnt buy it, EVERYONE knew about it. that building was built in the 50"s i believe. They basically paved over a grave yard to build a gas station and a road ,where the people from the church were when all this took place i dont know but people are to blame for this but wont ever take responsibility TRUST me no accident and people were fully aware of it being there in 2000 how did they now know in 1950"s when they paved over it

If it were Native American Graves, we wouldn't even hear about it.
