Is the functional capacity test easy to pass if you workout daily? What are the exercises or activities? I take mine next week.

How long do u walk on the treadmill and do they monitor your heart rate, pulse, etc?

yea im in operations. I don't remember exactly how long u walk on the treadmill but it's not that long. There are a few test that your heart rate will be monitored so relax and try not to let your heart rate get to high. Good luck with the internship, listen and learn everything u can and that will help u go far.

Cool...What are the chances of getting hired on full time after the intern? I heard there would be some hiring in September.

I can't comment on the chevron hook-up conspiracy theory but my own personal dealings as a contract designer dictate such theories are true...TRUST ME I know lol! Its hard to get noticed without an inside track, the surplus of qualified people is crazy!!
Your correct regarding remaining industries, but I would add technology, healthcare, and entertainment...thou healthcare is becoming socialized.
Its not a conspiracy theory. I'm just telling you guys what I've been told by other people who a)have tried to get on out there, b)people who I know who either are now retired or did work out there as operators & other things but who told me the same story & c)I talked to the local employment/unemployment state office. As in the local govt. I explained how I've tried multiple times "to get on" with Chevron & yet they told me the same thing, you have to know somebody.

What you're saying sound about the same. If you live in bigger cities though its usually easier to find work because corporations tend to run things more so than local good old boy networks. Meaning company people follow hiring policies to the 't' instead of just hiring on their friends & family like they do down here in South Mississippi.

When the local WIN Job Center(call them & ask, if you don't believe me, or they probably won't say so on the telephone but go in & talk one on one & the people who work there will tell you what I'm telling you) tells you that you "have to known somebody" then you know it to be true.

This is nonsense of the highest caliber. I've already passed the test. I'm fairly young though not a 20 year old kid & I'm able-bodied. I have a high school diploma & some college. I'm as qualified as any other joe blow or working stiff out there. I have no criminal record, can pass a drug test, you name it, I can do it.

But as I said, you don't know the right man or woman -- you're not getting on out there, pretty much that simple.

Desi, welcome to the club. The "wait is driving you crazy" -- wait til you're unemployed for 2 years like I used to be with no money coming in but an unemployment check.

If you think you're special think again, it took them months to send me a "didn't get the job" letter when I applied back in 08. As I told you -- you're not getting on without some good old boy pulling the strings. Not gonna happen. The 'boss man' makes the decisions out there.

Do you have to comment on everything I post? So you've been unemployed for 2 years. Boo hoo. Work in fast food and stop milking the state while you sit on your ass. Sure, it not the best job, but you can sure as hell pay bills with it. It's better than waiting around with your thumb up your ass. Sorry you didn't get the job. I'm allowed to feel anxious about the wait, though, regardless. Now leave me the hell alone, cuz I'm bout damn sick of it.

Yea, you have no f-ing idea what you're talking about. I HAVE worked fast food over the years. Go to McD's -- the crew is full. I have a standing application in with them. I'm not on umemployment now, I said for 2 years, not currently. The point is NO ONE is hiring. For ANYTHING. There's a construction site near my house, I've been there 8 or 9 times in the past 3 or 4 months. They have work for Mexicans but not for me.

And you do realize that I'm not "mooching" off the taxpayer right? You do realize the federal govt is printing up the ENTIRE deficit right now...don't you? You're not paying into anything. The only reason inflation hasn't picked up yet & f**ked us the way its f**king most of Latin America is because we're exporting our inflation. I PAID INTO unemployment for YEARS before finally taking a nickel from it. I WORKED for every fucking penny I took out my friend. Every nickel. Every shiny little dime my friend. I'm not mooching off you because I'm "too lazy to work".

"Boo hoo I didn't get the job" -- that's kinda the whole point of your whining isn't it? You do realize the govt subsidizes fast food right? Even if I go work fast food -- I qualify for welfare benefits, food stamps etc -- you do realize that don't you? People who "work" at Walmart for slave wages @ their non-union job are almost all on welfare, right? And if they aren't -- they're stupid. Because they can be.

Also -- pay bills on a fast food wage? What planet do you f**king live on? You can't even buy a 3 year old used hatchback much less your monthly insurance payment for that. No bank will give you a f**king car note. Believe me, I've tried, hard, over the last 5 years to get one.

If I didn't have relatives & friends helping me out, I'd be totally f**ked.

You can't pay crap with a service sector job.

When the oil spill happened there was a law to make sure locals got priority when hiring so outsiders couldn't come in & work. People in other states & other regions of the state shouldn't be able to come in & scoop up what tiny amt. of work there is left.

Again, to bad people around here are too lazy, sheepish or stupid to raise their voice about it. Keep whining, you won't get the job. From the way you're talking your "connection" isn't high enough @ the refinery....good luck either way.

1st, I haven't whined even once. All I said was that I haven't heard anything. 2nd, I have payed my bills with a fast food paycheck for 5 years. So, don't tell me it's impossible. Also, you probably don't get hired because people can tell what a dumbass who is just full of a lot of bullshit you are. I will get this job. It may not be this go around but I'm not gonna tuck my tail under my legs in defeat and give up like you did. So, good luck with sitting on your ass, and have a pleasant rest of your afternoon.

Update on the June Testing. 2 Days of testing June 4th and June 11. I tested on the 4th with 59 others. They said at the testing that more than 2500 applications were turned in for the job, selections for testing were random, they are hiring 17 in this class, that everyone that passed would get an interview, and the interview process would start on June 15th.

On June 4th. The test had 3 sections. 1. Mostly reading comprehension with some graphs and minor calculations (mostly fractions and basic algebra). 2. BASIC mechanical aptitude- e.g. pullies, levers, pumps, ect. that required making basic algebraic equations to solve some of the problems. Some basic physics as well. 3. Personality test. The test itself was remarkably easy and I finished every section in half the testing time. From what I hear the test was 'dumbed down' to make it more of an 'equal opportunity'. The testing process took 4 hours. The test itself was multiple choice on scantron. Every walk of life was in there taking the test including one kid who was probably 350lb at 5'5. I felt good about the test when I left.

June 24th- 20 days later I got an email saying congrats for passing the test and if I was again randomly selected I would get an email for an interview.

June 25th- The very next day. Call from Chevron to set up interview for Mid-July. I was told on the phone that an email would be sent providing more information about the date.

Note:
1:I know of 3 young men that took the course at the MGCCC recently and failed the test.
2:One woman I know took the test/passed and got a call that she was not selected for the interview process.

When it is all said and done I will try to post how it goes. This post is entirely meant to help others understand the hiring process. If anyone has questions please reply.

My friend also recently got a call for an interview after passing the test. He got a degree and interned in operations. It was almost a year after his internship was up they opened the position for testing. Yes it does take forever. Yes you do have to be patient. Like anything else right now it is the luck of the draw. Im sure there is some "good ole boy" situations. If you really want to work there don't give up.

Hey Jud that's the test I took -- and passed. I know another guy who took it 3 or 4 times & passed it. As I said before -- you don't know somebody -- you're not getting on out there. They bring on the 10 or 20 or 30 people who 'know' the right people & they get all the work.

Good luck to you though brother.

Gulf, I'm an operations trainee in my third year. 99% of the time the heaviest thing you lift all day is a tool belt with channel locks and a cheater on it. You are not paid for what you lift. You are paid to study lineups and chemical reactions so when shit hits the fan you work quickly and safely.
Desi, I didnt know a single person out there. I was hired because I have a four year degree from southern and some work experience at Ingalls. My shift team leader said what more than likely gave me the edge was the degree. It shows you are capable of studying hard and devoting time to understanding the process. Don't give up. There's 5 highly capable operators in my area. One is an HO. Knowledge is power out there. It's what makes you a capable operator. Not lifting wrenches. That's what contractors and maintnance is for. Operators get paid to think.
