My family left the Coast after Katrina.(thank God)

I'm visiting friends down here. Long story short I haven't even been here since early 2006.

I drove around my old neighborhood in College Park and De La Forest and I noticed A LOT of houses are just abandoned.

Some have rent/sale signs but others the grass hasn't been mowed in months on end and there are no curtains or blinds and the houses are dark. Some even have the mailboxes taken off.

What is going on with the old neighborhood?

Crime's been bad there for a real long time but come on -- are people literally abandoning the neighborhood?

Are they not worrying about even selling their homes or can they not find buyers?

I hope all my old friends and neighbors got out.

That neighborhood looks like it's on life support.

Thank God I didn't bother going down toward Belville.

I know that there are still several respectable families living in college park. The trouble is that you never see the hard working, bill paying, law abiding people because they dont draw attention to themselves. The ones that refuse to get a job, sell drugs, and otherwise ruin neighborhoods are the ones that are "in your face" in public because they choose to have nothing better to do. I worked in that area in the late 90's and you are right the neighborhood has changed. But as far as Belleville is concerned, there is still crime there but it is not near as bad as it was in 97. I think college park and de la forest could be a decent place again, its just going to take neighbors coming together to stand up for each other and help the police by repoorting crimes and not being afraid. Whomever you know that still lives there, encourage them to start a neighborhood watch program. Lets sponsor neighborhood picnics. Lets get people together for a change and make a difference. Once people actually see that there are plenty of "good folk" that still live there maybe things will change for the better. If they are waiting on a politician to do it for them, then they will be waiting forever......
