You people don't honestly think this will "create new jobs" do you? It won't create new jobs, its gonna cause lay offs @ the Pascagoula & Ocean Springs stores, that's all it'll do.

Its the same reason why the Gaming Commission regulates the number of casinos down here because if you let a million pop up you'll strangle the market.

Same thing here, it'll just lead to market saturation. I wouldn't be shocked @ all if Jerry Lee's goes out of business because of this as will one or two of the dollar stores in town. Who the hell can compete? And look @ the strip malls by the Walmart in Ocean Springs or the one in D'Iberville - a third empty.

This will bring some stuff to town but it'll just take jobs from the surrounding areas & put other smaller employers like Jerry Lee's & maybe even Walgreens out of business.

That's the thing about Gautier -- its not big enough to keep the store open 24-7. If they make it a Neighborhood Market Walmart I can see that but a Super Center? Talking about super-saturating a market....

For every one job created will lead to another one lost @ another local business. Notice also the lack of restaurants around the one in Ocean Springs besides the crap we already have here(Subway, Sonic, etc).

D'Iberville & Gulfport have many restaurants because its OFF I-10. That's Gautier's handicap.

We might 'create jobs' here but you'll lose other jobs. One Jerry Lee's already shut down. Wait til the other one does. The old Delchamps store in Ocean Springs still hasn't been filled.

That shopping center will be shut down. And I doubt it will but don't be shocked if that Walmart shuts down as well I dunno if we have enough ppl here to prop up the store, unless its one of the smaller Supercenters, like the one they have up in Waynesboro or in Wiggins.

You make some salient points Gulf. However, we are a free market based economy and many people believe that the benefits of Wal Mart outweigh the negatives. I would have preferred a drive by the local governments to recruit Costco as it is in my humble view a far superior retailer to Wal Mart. Perhaps I'm misguided but I think the way to beat Wal Mart is through superior products and service and that is exactly what Costco delivers. In no way should any governmental agency be involved in determining the outcomes.

Yep, the Walmartians will wander obediently to the big box just like dumb cattle up the slaughter house chute. Your life will be tailored around what the almighty store puts on the shelf for you to buy because your other choices in town go out of business when you turn your back on them. Those local jobs lost to Walmart are not so wonderful when you have to find employment there and discover the managers get bonus' for keeping employees way under forty hours to avoid paying full time benefits. Profit from the local businesses stayed local. Profit from Walmart goes to Arkansas. On the lighter side, you will be in the good company of the community's finest...... " People Of Walmart "

Well that's not really true about it being 'a free market' in the sense that you're thinking as Walmart as lawyers, a superior capital position/infrastrucutre, etc with which to make investments & to gobble up market share.

I guess what I'm saying is that if Walmart comes it'll put EVERYBODY ELSE in town out of business. It would be the same effect as if a Walmart went to Moss Point. There just aren't enough ppl to make it worthwhile while not @ the same time giving Walmart a monopoly like effect on the town. Ocean Springs & Pascagoula can only sustain 2 shopping centers a piece besides their Super Walmart because everybody from the surrounding rural areas(for OS its the Gulf Park Estates/Vancleave/St Martin areas, & for Goula its Moss Point & Hurley & Kreola) shop there. Gautier doesn't really have too many rural areas & its not worth going way the hell down from Vancleave just to go to Jerry Lees when you just go to the Food Tiger up there. Ppl go to Walmart for a reason.

I do agree with you on Costco. I've often wondered why there aren't more Targets or Costcos down this way or even Kmarts. You'd think they'd bring the old Kmart back to the Jerry Lees shopping lot but they don't. I dunno. Gautier is so far flung though with Hickory Hills being so disconnected from the rest of the city. There really isn't too much in infrastructure in the way of supporting such a move.

But hey I guess if its what the city wants -- good luck to them, I guess.

I never knew that about the bonuses for cutting hours but it makes sense now. I worked for them years ago & our manager @ the time busted our balls left & right about not going over 40 hrs & screaming like mad @ us to make we got everything done & we rushed. Real slavedrivers & no union protection. Stupid coworkers too.

Makes sense now why they were trying to curb our hrs -- so the managers & "shareholders" could pocket the payroll

Walmart beat their vendors to a pulp with the " We want it cheaper or we'll go to China and kick you to the curb", which they did. They also demand extra long payment terms where small stores normally only get 30 days net. Walmart gets their material, distributes it,sells it, and rides the vendors money in the bank months before they pay the bill. Dealing with them is like throwing a soup bone out to the dog after you've eaten and boiled everything away and you expect the dog to be happy.
