Ingalls won't pursue office space on Pascagoula's redeveloped riverfront

Feb 13, 2013 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: The Mississippi Press

A plan to redevelop Pascagoula's riverfront has been dealt what could be a major blow, as the Pascagoula Redevelopment Authority learned Friday that Ingalls Shipbuilding will not move forward with an office space deal.

Oh me oh my. I predicted this 2 or so years ago when they announced it. Slidell has done something very similar. Their taxbase still hasn't recovered from Hurricane Katrina & they recently took out bonds to 'build up office space & retail space & prime water front real estate' & stuff like that.

I knew this would be a boondoggle. Its like the parking garage downtown -- its a 'bridge to nowhere' type thing. Nobody goes downtown. I've only been downtown maybe twice in the entire pass year and maybe 5 or 6 times only in the past 3 or 4 years. I have no reason to go there save when I need to get documents at the courthouse.

I figured Ingalls was pulling out. They're in the process now of shutting down the Avondale Yard in New Orleans. The second the Navy money runs out they're gonna shutter the plant in Gulfport off of Seaway Rd. Ingalls is next.

When the bosses use terms like "workforce reductions" or "budget labor issues" it means they're in the process of cannibalizing their payroll to lay ppl off so the big bosses can pocket the difference. And since its govt money its basically corporate welfare & these ppl are mooches off the federal taxpayer teet.

Time to throw them off & let them sink or swim in the free market that they talk about so much.

I knew this was a boondoggle. Gautier is borrowing millions too to upgrade the area around the mall, that also won't bring in the money they think it will, it'll only make the city even more indebted than it already is as they're paying for all this crap with development bonds, which don't have to be paid back til later & are hard to discharge in bankruptcy court if the city goes belly up. Moss Point did something similar with its river front area by borrowing money for that crap & Ocean Springs did it with the bonds they dumped to pay for the new cop station so they could shake down ppl going to shop @ Walmart & ppl going to and from to work at the shipyard.

If it wasn't for Chevron & Ingalls money Pascagoula would be broke already. It'd be a slightly better off version of Moss Point.

All this debt they're borrowing or these grants they're getting -- its just wasted money that will help connected contractors get contracts on the public dime while the rest of us get squat.

Pascagoula is building a 'riverfront to nowhere' with a parking garage & sidewalks nobody will use. Gautier built a bunch of ugly boat shaped benches nobody uses because if ppl want to walk they walk up at the college track or down the street.

Ocean Springs built a huge ass police slash fire station & yet they only have 8 full time fire fighters. Its all for the cops to act as 'revenue enhancers.'

This is all the while O.S.'s budget has declined near a quarter(23%) in the past 2 years per Connie Moran's speech recorded in the newspaper the other week.

Long story short: the cities are broke. They're running on a combination of fumes & federal govt money keeping them afloat or over-relying on 1 or 2 large employers. And sometime in the coming 10 or 20 years ingalls is going to shut down that shipyard because its too far away. Those navy officials don't like having to fly down here in the middle of nowhere. Even if its the yard in New Orleans, this region is too isolated. They want to move all the crap up there to Newport News. That way they only have to hop on the freeway in Virginia & drive for a few hrs instead of doing an elaborate plane trip down here just to inspect work.

They'll shut that shipyard down within 10 to 20 years, if not less.
