Mar 5, 2013 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: The Mississippi Press

For the fourth time in the last several years, representatives of Smoke Free Mississippi pitched the idea of a smoke-free ordinance in Ocean Springs to the board of aldermen.

As a business owner who pays taxes and hires local people, I appreciate the board taking the position of not tellig me how to run my buisiness. I don't allow smoking in my business but I made that decision, not the government. Until you make my payroll or pay my property tax, I would appreciate you staying out of my business. That means you Connie Moran.

Typical 1970's thinking business owner. Keep sticking your head in the sand.

Excuse me but as a business owner you already have to follow the hundreds of local, state and federal codes, laws and ordinances to keep your business open to the public. I would appreciate YOU continue to follow them and yes I'm glad big government is watching you and all business owners and protecting the workers and patrons. It is the duty of the local, state and fed officials that when something as hazardous to your health as second hand smoke that they are protecting us against foolish "Business Owners" that think they know it all and are experts at everything.
Are you suggesting we get rid of the health inspectors, and maybe the fire marshall too?

Go Connie!!! And we vote too.

I have a hard time deciding what I hate the most, smoking or the overreach of the government. All business owners should realize that a smoke filled area is bad for business.

This is one topic I'm really torn on. I think if the business is mainly a bar type establishment that doesn't overtly cater to children that it should be left up to the owner.

If its a family-oriented thing with children around -- I'm more inclined to favor not an outright ban but pressuring the owner to ban smoking.

I used to smoke cigars a bit so I can't judge other people but I can understand the need for this if children are around, but if they aren't, I'm inclined to leave it @ the discretion of the business owner as adult customers have a choice to get up & leave where as children have to obey their stupid parents in that situation.

But even then I'm more inclined to leave it up to the business owner.

Second hand smoke is bad, the evidence is undeniable. Multiple agencies already tell businesses how cold their fridge has to be or how many exit signs there needs to be, and the alderman recently passed an ordinance on noise after midnight. Noise doesn't harm anyone. The liberterian spirit is admirable, except when it blocks you from seeing the truth. We will look back at this in 10 years and wonder why we didn't do this earlier, like seatbelts and carseats for children. I do think smokers should have an indoor place, local bar or such, that they can congregate in and smoke, but not in a restaurant.

Just go to any bar in Maryland all 100% smoke free, Mom & Pop bars, Large bars and restaurants, Biker Bars, sports bars, Casinos and even Veteran Clubs are all doing just fine without the smoke. It's been several years now and business owners now wish they went smoke free years ago. It's a win win for all.

Every time I read a negative health study, where does Mississippi rank? Ranks right at the very top.(being the worst). Come on Mississippi wake the heck up, the rest of the country is sick (no pun intended) of paying for your poor health/living. Clean up your act!!!

No business in 2013 should allow smoking, absolutely NONE! It isn't rocket science.

Back in 05 I went to Orlando on a vacation & there was a little dinky dive bar in my hotel. Everybody was smoking in it even though I was told the county there had a smoke-ban. When I asked the bartender he replied "yeah, but nobody gives a sh*t. See any inspectors?"

Even if you pass a law -- doesn't really mean everybody will follow it.

For all of you who want the govt running your business, please stay out of mine. I am smart enough to set policy in my own business that takes care of my customers. I don't need or want Connie Moran establishing more rules and regulations that dictates how I run my own business. I'm glad she has chosen to not come in and drink at my place of business. If she does, I will certainly video her drinking too much and staggering out of my business. Then all of Ocean Springs can see what she is all about. I believe most people have figured her out.

You my pompous OS business owner are EXACTLY the reason why we need the hundreds of fire, safety and health codes, laws and ordinances. You think you are sooooo smart. Well smart ass, do you tell the fire marshal he can't come in? Do you tell the health inspector to take a hike too? Those people and our political leaders are here to PROTECT your employees and patrons and to keep us all safe whether you like it or not. Second hand smoke is a proven hazard and has no place in ANY Business and that includes your joint too.

Hey, SFF. Did you read OS Business Owner's first post? He doesn't allow smoking in his establishment. So why don't YOU take a very long walk off a short pier.

SFF didn't read where I don't allow smoking in my establishment. I made that choice. Not Connie Moran or a bunch of bleading heart liberal politicians who don't pay my property taxes, meet my payroll, make my mortgage payment to Hancock Bank, or pay my insurance premium, both propery and health. I hope the people of Ocean Springs take notice that the likes of Connie Morn will try to increase fees, taxes and te cost of doing business to further their political careers without the first thought to what it means to a small business owner. I just wish she would pay her tab when she wals out of a restaurant, or bar. The people of this town have been fooled by her and her liberal followers for long enough. It is time to fire Connie Moran.

I really don't think it has anything to do with being a bleeding heart liberal. I'm a die hard Republican and I agree that smoking doesn't belong in any business in 2013. It's a HEALTH issue not a political issue. If your business is open to the public then you already have to follow hundreds of safety and health codes, laws and ordinances. And please stop whining about who pays your taxes, we all pay taxes, I'm sick of it too but don't whine all day about it.

Look here dummy.... Idiots like you are the reason laws are in place. Idiots like you are the kind we see on the news buying and selling meat that expired two weeks ago. Idiots like you are the kind that buy liquor from the bootlegers to save a few bucks. Idiots like you are the ones we see on TV bot storing food at the proper temps and getting everybody sick. Idiots like you are the reason people die in a fire because some jackass violated the fire code. Government sets rule to protect people from your kind. I hope someday that *if*(and I am I not saying, I want the act to happen), but *IF* someone sticks a gun in your nose, and you call the local law enforcement, or if your place catches on fire, and you call the fire department, that they tell you to take care of it yourself. Remember, you are the one who does not want government to interfere. Can't pick and choose what you want Charlie.

You like the "government" to stop smoking but you won't like it when they interfere with your life in some way...be it zoning or some other ordinance. Be still you bleeding liberals..you whine and complain when your ox is gored and you want laws for every thing you don't like. I hate smoke, I hate being around people who are smoking..but why should I require an entire city be smoke free? All you have to do is avoid those bars, restaurants, business that permit smoking and exercise our capitalistic powers of free enterprise! Today its smoking, tomorrow we will have food police telling us what we can't eat!!!!! Stop this madness....Keep the Government out of our lives!

Says every moron who serves expired food, re-serves things sent back to the kitchen, doesn't clean prep-areas well enough, has inadequate ventilation that presents a fire hazard, allows too many patrons in, serves alcohol to kids, serves after hours, allows all kinds of building code violations to go without being taken care of...all this because someone wants to make a buck.

Is this the kind of "smart enough" you are yammering on about?

How about you stick to running your business within the boundaries of the law, and the patrons will not have to worry if some moron decides to "take care of his customers" by doing anything to make that extra buck!

We should not need a law to tell us second hand smoke is bad for everone that comes in contact with it.All places where people who do not smoke come to should be smoke free.If I owned a business of any kind being smoke free would be an easy choice.
