I've owned a few stores in Gatlinburg over the years. Middle Easterners do hurt business, hands down. I mean the way they act drives people away but what can be done by other businesses? You can't make a " we don't want Pakastanis to own shops" law. Maybe if people explained to the Chamber of Commerce or Better Business Bureau.....

As far as pipes and airsoft..... I know a few legit Iraqis that have those in their shops because they sell so many of them. It seems the people that buy bongs and toy guns aren't the types that look too deeply into "untrashing" Gatlinburg. But they supply the demand. If pipes paid you're rent each month, why wouldn't you sell them?

Something else that helps them get ahead is the fact that alot of them HELP each other. Americans are usually greedy and see competition. Instead of helping another shop owner make it, we want to close their shop, and guess who opens it back up? I know of 3-4 guys that go in together to buy huge lots of goods they SPLIT. They have different shops, same items, but because they split the costs they make more money due to discounts in quantity and shipping...

That's funny. Since many of us know that you are actually cherokeegurl, or happynow, or whatever you are calling yourself these days. Your blatant self-promotion in your pathetic attempts to regain your status as a Destination Expert in the TA forum is laughable.

We visit Gatlinburg at least twice a year. We love it, but I do not like supporting the foreigner's either. I have quit going for the shopping and spend more time in the mountains. One thing they havn't been able to claim is the real reason I visit the area. They cannot steal the beauty of the mountains, the streams and all that the Smokies has to offer "naturally"! I refuse to allow them to keep me from enjoying something I love!!

I am staying in a community between the two cities here and I am sure that I have never seen the amount of crap sold anywhere else in my life. It is like I have walked into ebay the town... Nothing worth while at all. Saving my money for when I get back home. Buy something I like and need. The area is beautiful and I love it just wish there were some real crafts not a bunch of fn chinese junk..

Look for the American owned stores and only shop at those. Also make sure you go to the arts & crafts community. I did. There is a place there that makes the most comfy moccasins ever. I also buy my jellies, jams and syrups from the arts & crafts community. Then there is that store that sales all of the stuff made out of copper. I just love it, and I am all about putting money into the locals pockets. You know good and well that most of those middle easterns who have stores there, do not even live in Sevier co. Most probably live over in Knox Co.

We want to move up there too. Well not right in Gatlinburg, but outside of town. What towns are just on the outskirts of Gatlinburg that the tourists do not flock to? I have never really headed up 321 except to go to the arts & crafts community. Are there any small towns up that way, that are not too far away? There are a lot of jobs right now up there, and where I presently live our unemployment rate is at 12.9%. I will wait tables. I am not picky. My husband could do maintenance on hotels or chalets. He's a very hard worker, and knows his stuff.

I agree with you there. That is why I saved most of my shopping money for stores that had American owned signs up, and the rest I spent in the arts & crafts community. Those foreign owned stores are all the same thing anyway. They all sale the same tshirts and souvenirs. The worst part is when they buy out hotels, because they are notorious for not keeping them up. They'll come in, paint some walls and put new covers on the beds and call that a remodel. That is exactly what they did at that nasty Days inn we stayed at in August. The place was a dump, and I noticed the owner is a Patel.

You are 100% correct. Gatlinburg has turned into a dump in the last 10 years. Piss poor city management is one of the biggest problems.

Why are you people so racist? Is there really a need to call them ragheads and sandn****rs? Really? What a bunch of racist douche bags. I can understand you being upset that they take business away from the locals and get tax breaks. That's completely legit. But do you really have to be such racist a**holes? I don't go in a shop just because it's American owned. I go because they have something I want to buy. And if they don't, I leave. If they treat me like sh*t, I leave. American owned or immigrant owned. I've had a bad experience with a business owner in an American owned store over there. She acted like she was above ne and looked at me like trash. So guess what! I LEFT!!! Race has nothing to do with it. Maybe try learning to think for yourselves.

Oh! I'd like to add that it is a MYTH that the government grants a 5 year tax break to immigrant business owners. Do your research. Knowledge is power.

Ive shopped at pretty much all the shops in Gatlinburg and they all seem to sell the same items so if one treats me bad I simply move on to the next shop. Dont really care who owns the store as long as they treat me right.
