Is the Houseright family taking over gchs sports? I hear they are getting track, cross country, and pe at the high school. Surely, this board has more sense than the last...or is it the same ole same ole?

Great, they can use their superiorist attitude to drive athletes away and set the programs back years like they did at Twin Springs.

Let's hope not. The previous board made a huge mistake when they hired Houseright in the first place. He was retired, had already quit the Gate City Football program once. He had been to Twin Springs and Rye Cove and quit there (not to mention Bobby Lee is right, the superior attitude turned everyone off). Several other full time employees put in for the football job and yet the previous board hired Houseright (out of retirement).

I have heard of several players not playing this year if all the Houserights are there.

The Houseright's coach football (father, son, son, son) the girls basketball is coached by Houseright (husband and wife). Now they want everything else. Wasn't that their goal in running Reed off? Let's hope this new board shakes it up a little and does not allow complete control. Let's hope someone has some sense.

I say let them coach whatever they want to coach. Those that don't want to play won't regardless of who the coach is. Never heard any complaints about Houseright, it was all about Reed, now that Reeds' gone, you're going to start on the Houserights. People in Gate City need to grow up!!!!!!!!!!

I hope the houserights prove me wrong, but I know of several kids refusing to play next year because of the superior attitude. I hope they don't run kids off from sports because there is not much else to do in this small town for kids except sports.

Hey, a superior attitude is what it takes to be a winner. as parents we hate to admit it, but if you're if you're not a little cocky in football, you'll get eaten alive. Look for this season to be down, but they'll be back.

I agree, winning takes confidence. But this superior attitude I am speaking of is berating to the kids and non-approachable. That's a BIG difference!

Who gets to decide who are coaches? Principals, sbo, or members?

Principles submit their recommendations. Then the board decides on that recommendation and votes.

in 1989 my son played for gchs and housewright harassed the boys until they quit including my son. i might add he is not a quitter. there is a thin line there. sure you can't handle them with kid gloves but a good coach knows when to draw the line. my son thought coach rogers was the best on the field. he was humane but tough. it would be nice if houseright and his hunting buddys would stay on their hunting club and quit poaching on other peoples property. post their club and hunt on the neighbors. the next time the game warden will be involved. he has already been talked to about this poaching!!

You said your son quit, but that he's not a quitter? Is quitting not the very definition of a quitter?

Let me start by saying that football takes 2 key things that each player must have as a parent of one I have learned this first hand. First each player must have the skill to play the game. Second each TRUE player must have the heart to do whatever it takes to be the best. You say that Coach Housewright harassed boys into quitting well that tells me that they were lacking in heart for the game. I know many of you don't understand why they are hard on these kids but when the true BLUE DEVILS are older they will. I don't feel that Coach Housewright is expects anymore out of these kids than the CEO at Eastman expects out of his employees. He just expects them to do what is needed to get their job done. So maybe you should ask your child do they want to succeed or fail. I have been blessed to know The Housewright's on and off the field and I know that I would want them as a role model for my kids any day. You say why would they bring him back from retirement well maybe the dead beat teacher we have at the high school now can't handle the job. I can count on 1 hand the teachers that could even attempt it. So my hat is off to Coach Bill HOusewright and his coaching staff. All I can say now is GO BIG BLUE!!!!!

Mediocrity in every sport....haha the combination of the Houseright's taking over and the school losing some serious athletes and leaders due to graduation is going to be a disaster. Houseright isn't that good of a coach, anyone could have won state with that football team. The same goes for the girls basketball team

Has anyone heard that Gary Collier might be the OC this year for the high school football team? Does Houseright realize his last name is Collier and not Houseright. Hopefully our offense won't be so predictable. If Collier is succesful, I bet by the end of the year he will be forced to change his last name to Houseright.

Then trot right up there and see what you can do if you think it is so easy. The amount of money these coaches make is not all that much.
Bill has been coaching football for over 30 years and has forgot more football than most of us know. People should be grateful that he and his boys care enough about Gate City football to take the time and interest to be involved with it.

Exactly, Bill get's paid, his boys volunteer to be there. its because they care about the program. I assure you Bill doesn't make enough to have to put up with the crap that comes along with coaching at GC... he has to be there because he wants to be. if you can say that a team was good enough to win without the coach.. then the reverse is also true..... so when they lose, don't bitch. because some teams are so bad no matter how good the coach is.... it doesn't matter.

"Alright guys, we're gonna run it up the middle every play no matter how many yards we lose every time we do it" Sound's pretty easy.(2010 state championship team was stacked with depth and skill at every position)
