I have seen the list of four applicants for the new Scott County School Board Superintendent and was shocked that I recognized one of the names as the former juvenile court Judge Greg Baker. I googled the name and sure enough it was the same Greg Baker who was removed from the bench a few years ago for lying on his judicial application that he had no criminal record when in fact he had a past charge of solicitation for prostitution. I have spoken with one source in the school system who actually thinks he will get the job. I said you have got to be kidding me that the the school board members would actually consider this man for the one of if not the most influential job in Scott County after he had already disgraced teh county previously with his conduct. I hope I am not the only person who has contacted their school board representative over my concerns. I did learn he is actually the school system attorney which is not suprising. I urge all concerned citizens in Scott County who have children in school or have concerns over the reputation of the county in general, contact their school board members and voice their concerns. It is appalling to me that no letters to the editor have been written or for that fact no articles by our local news media have been written as Mr. Baker's removal from the bench was well covered when it happened.

God Bless

I can understand your concerns about Greg Baker. But from the way you sound you really don't know much about Mr. Baker. He was not removed from the bench due to any misconduct concerning children. He made a mistake "years" ago while in law school and failed to list it when applying for judgeship. If you were familiar at all concerning his term while juvenile judge you would know that he was very fair and firm with those appearing before him. As far as I'm concerned you couldn't ask for anyone that would try to do everything possible for the good of the school system and the students in the system.

I appreciate your response but I did some more searching. As a retired teacher I am not the most internet saavy but I have figured out a Google search will come up with about anything that is needed. According to your post this "mistake" happened in law school. The order, below, was taken verbatim and it appears it happened in 1994. I made some calls and am not certain but believe he was not only out of law school but married and had a child at this time. This mistake was solicitation for prostitution as listed in the official court record below as a conviction. My concern is whether the current application or resume that has been forwarded to the Scott County School Board makes reference to any prior convictions. I feel certain that an applicant for a teachers position, teacher's aide or for that fact janitor would be looked upon with watchful eyes if they had a past conviction such as Mr. Baker. The fact he lied not only on one occasion but two about his "mistake" and actually got away with it for some time is disturbing and leads one to wonder what kind of vetting was used when appointing judges. This leads me back to the point of why disgrace the county when other candidates are available with no record of such mistakes. Do the school board members not realize that at some point this will be an issue if Mr. Baker is appointed. I do not want to demonize the man and hope he has a long and successful career in some other endeavor but being the face of the Scott County School System should not be it. There are some things that can be forgiven but thanks to newspaper articles and the internet they will not be forgotten. I implore all educated and concerned citizens of Scott County to contact their school board representative and feel free to copy the below post as it appears they have forgotten about the incident or simply don't care.

I really don't understand what the big issue is here. If you would stop and take a minute and look at some of the people who are sitting in office now. Jim Scott has been nothing but a big mistake as a Superintendent. If you took every person that was in office at the School Board and actually looked at them as an individual on a hand full would actually really qualify for the position. Scott County School Board needs to be cleaned up and get rid of the perverts and alcoholics.

How long do people feel they have to "hold" things from the past over a person's head. It was a misdemeanor, like a simple speeding ticket. He paid his price. I would venture to say that there are probably some things you have hidden away, too. His are out in the open.

Jim Scott's not quitting. He's just going to work from home. That's why the board is naming a Super with no education experience. Scott will still call all the shots through Baker. They are big skirt chasing buddies.

I agree with Nickle man they all should go. Tell me what other scholl board would allow children to remain in school when their was most of the county under water weeks ago or better yet lets talk about the major screw up December 18,2009 when the blizzard hit and the kids had to stay in school because Jim Scott was on
VACATION and gave ORDERS NOT to let the kids out early for any reason. This came from teachers in Gate City. Get rid of them and vote is some who will do what is best for our children.

In Scott County if you are in the buddy system you are in. The school board is a joke as is the board of supervisers. Who ever is pulling the strings is the one that needs to be run off. The Superintendent office should be voted on. As you see we have 5 perverts on the board now. That is why the voters need to vote it in. Because out of 6 people only one had the balls to do the right thing. What is wrong in this county. Things just kept getting worst. Will the voters now have to also pay Jim Scott's new paycheck as advisor. Lets get rid of Scott and Baker and get someone who can do the job.

That is uncalled for. I'm assuming you have never made a mistake in your life.....right. I love when people criticize others because it usually means they themselves have some of their own "dirty laundry". Was he wrong? Yes, and he has paid for that mistake. Think of the mistakes YOU have made in the past and how YOU would feel if they were dug up after many years, especially if since then you've been nothing but a good, honest, caring, individual and contributor to society. I don't see you applying for the position. One that can be very thankless and constantly criticized by the likes of you. I have a feeling Mr. Baker is going to make some GOOD changes...ones that most are going to buck on because this area can't seem to get it's head out of the sand and admit it's the 21st century. But I implore him to fight the good fight, and don't let those that make it their pathetic life's mission to tell what they think he is doing wrong.
Morals are based on more than just a promiscuous situations you know. Setting out to ruin someone for your own smugness is right up there too.

First of all I think you mean "fed" and not "feed". Secondly, you are making some very harsh accusations that you need to be able to back up. People in this area need to knock it off with the gossip bald face lies. Get over yourselves. Get a hobby, or better yet, write your mouths shut. That's the biggest issue in Scott County, not who is on the school board!

"A new beginning" sounds like another good ole Democratic saying like the "Change" thing. Are all school board and supervisors democrats? I really don't know - are they? Are the old and new superintendent also democrats? Don't know - just asking. Anybody know?

Actually, I'm a Conservative Republican, and saying I'm a Democrat is quite an insult to me. Are you saying only Democrats want change? Because if so, then explain all the Republicans wanting "change" this November.
Chances are, you have no clue what I'm referring to when I say Mr. Baker will bring change. If you did, you'd have a better understanding.
And yes, obviously I meant WIRE and not write. Never rely on your autofill.

Count your blessings. Things could have gone another way, and it would have been BAD.

I too am a conservative person and also a resident of Scott County. I agree that a person deserves a second chance but there are some issues I have with the present cicumstance. Mr. Baker does have a prior record of deceit and true it could have been a simple mistake. I however will agree with the Scott County School Board that Mr. Baker is a very intelligent and motivated person. I believe when Mr. Baker made his trangression that it was a decision that he had thought out and being that prostitute was an undercover vice police officer and the fact he was found guilty appears to mean he would have overtly asked for sexual services. He made this decision while married and out of law school. He then aggressively sought a judge's position three years later although the process of putting oneself in that position takes a much longer time.

Mr. Baker being a smart, motivated and generally affiable individual used his skills to set him in a position to get appointed to the bench. Mr. Baker being an expert on the law and he is reported to be an excellent attorney would have known that his judicial application would contain questions regarding a criminal conviction. I would assume he made a very deliberate decision to lie on the application on two occasions. The process for judicial appointment applications has since been changed(criminal record check now required) due in part to Mr. Bakers behavior. Mr. Baker's deceit was discovered and he was disbarred for 2.5 years and he was removed as a judge in Scott County. Some time in the past year Mr. Baker made a decision to apply as the Scott County School Attorney. I understand Mr. Baker and Mr. Scott were good friends during Mr. Baker's time on the bench.

I understand that Mr. Baker got his accredidation to be a superintendent while at William and Mary but it may have been another institution. Now why would an attorney go through the trouble to do this based on his past. I do not know if he and Mr. Scott kept in contact during his time away from Scott County but find it probable. Mr. Baker is either very lucky or cunning to be in the position of school system attorney with accredidation to become superintendent in arguably the only county in the state of virginia that might actually give him that position based on his past. It is my understanding that upon coming into the school system he began to make close allies of the school board members to gain their trust and position himself for possible appointment. I also have serious issues that Mr. Baker knowing he was going to be candidate for the position and knowing that the individual board members knew this as well made a decision for him to write the job description and run the advertisement for the position.

At this point Mr. Baker could not be in a better position. Mr. Baker at this point has almost taken over the process for his own appointment. Mr. Baker at this point had to wait out the process with hopes no public sentiment would sway the board members he had secured to vote for another candidate. Now back to the advertisement for the job. I was told the ad was ran in only one publication. So in a time of such economic upheaval and school systems across the nation facing job loss a whopping total of 4 applicants answer the ad which was placed by Mr. Baker. Mr. Baker's luck seems to get better. Mr. Baker through a series of very calculated decisions and cunning was voted in 5-1 as superintendent or Mr. Baker was very lucky. I say he is highly intelligent and calculated person. The issue I have is that although the position was not widely publicized there were reported to be candidates available that hailed here from Scott County and had no character issues at least documented in their past.
