Do you think punishment for crimes are hard enough?

I think the reason we have so many repeat offenders is because people convicted of a crime have it so easy. Yes they are locked away for short periods of time but as repeat offenders will tell you, they have three hots and a cot with no responsibilities which is how they live life everyday anyway. If we brought back hard labor for prisoners they might think twice about commiting a crime. They used to have to work on our roads, pea farms, cut grass along roadsides etc.. We didn't see as much crime back then. Wake up people!!! Don't you realize that people only tend to change when their punishment is actually punishment? Criminals are not going to change just because they are sent to their rooms (so to speak). People need to start demanding stiffer punishment! Our prisons wouldn't be so overcrowded if we actually metered out punishment like hard labor for criminals. The reasoning behind this is criminals do crimes to avoid having to work like the rest of us!
