I salute all you guys who support independent businesses. I really do. I order pizza from Cubby Bears Pizza. Screw Dominos. Blech! I shop for groceries at Big Johns, not Wal-Mart. In fact, I urge all to boycott Wal-mart, as they support slavery in foreign countries and abuse the rights of their American employees in various many ways.
Now for movies... you say do it better than Redbox and Netflix, but what is so great about them? Netflix sends old crap and rarely new releases, Redbox's selection is woefully limited and the discs are often scratched up. Reload the disc in the machine wrong and guess what? You just bought it. I also don't like Redbox's deceptive advertisements.$1 rentals, no late fees. Whaat? It's $1 a DAY, and each day is another $1, which IS a late fee however you want to call it. In fact, Redbox is looking at a class action lawsuit right now for $100 million in illegal late fees. You can't say no late fees and then charge late fees. It's called lying. Tried downloading a movie off I-tunes. It didn't work after taking 2 hrs to DL. No refunds. Bah! Screw that. I do download VOD off dish network, if it's free. No PPV. I rent at my local rental store so I can watch it when I want, how I want and as many times as I want. For the same prce or less. My local video store has new releases and a giant selection of older movies. They buff their movies in a repair machine so no skipping. Older movies are $5 for 5 movies for 5 nights. New releases are rent 3 get 1 free and late fees are $1 a day, just like Redbox. Maybe it's true the old days of Blockbusters and Movie Gallery are dead with their horrible late fee practices and shitty service, but my local independent shop is the shit so I am biased. I just get annoyed when people say Netflix, Redbox and DL are the future, because they are no better. They have their own weaknesses and drawbacks, and do not support your local economy. |

Do you guys think before you type, or are you really that ignorant on how the economy works. This is exactly why we have put ourselves out of the market. First we start paying people way too much money to do menial jobs, so we end up having to send work out to other countries, who can do it for cheap. Now America has become lazy, and is taking the money away from the communities they live in, just because its easier to sit on your butt at home, instead of going out to your local video store. You need to think about your community, because trust me nobody else will. Take care of your own. You want us to bounce back from this economy, then start helping out, by taking care of your local stores. just saying, I think you need to look at where those jobs are being created, because its not here in America. Do your research before you type please. When we start letting computers and robots do our jobs, where does that leave us, and our children.

Interesting update: Redbox is experimenting with various DVD rental models at select locations, trying to see how much they can get away with charging folks for movie rentals. Some kiosks charge $2,$1.50 a night, etc. Did you really think your pals at Redbox would keep the prices low after getting you all to abandon the brick-and-mortars? Soon you will be paying the same price or more for no customer service and less variety. Guaranteed. That's after damaging our economy by replacing human jobs with machines. Good work, Einsteins.
Update #2: Netflix has refinanced its credit with the banks, extending it another 5 yrs to 2017. What does this imply? The same scheme Movie Gallery attempted and failed to do: compete with unfairly low prices in an attempt to capture the market before the creditors come calling. Once their numbers hit a certain point, they will cease operating at a loss and raise their prices. The outcome is the same. Sacrifice our jobs so that they can make out like gangbusters. Great for them if it works. If not, BK in 2017. Please support your local businesses. |

I believe in supporting local businesses because I am a partner in a mom and pop movie business in a small town. Many people have lost their jobs and there are not many rebox posting jobs or internet posting jobs besides work from home.
Just to let some be informed companies where rebox, netflix are getting their movies are fighting back. do you see a sign up for previously viewed movies for sale? So, where do those used movies go....back to distributors. You will not see certain movies unless you go to a brick-and-mortar on the release date..Just to quote my distributors mag. " Many of the Major Hollywood films will now be available here 1st(my store) before vending machines, before mail, before many national retailers..........Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Bruno, etc. Are some people just so attached to their computers, electronics that they have totally forgotten human contact? |

And now we're getting dvd and blu ray players with movie streaming abilities... here's the catch: you can buy or rent a movie and download it, but you are only allowed to use the file on so many devices (3, I believe) and that's it. Convenient? Eh... if you consider purchasing a streaming device, hooking it up to an internet router, maintaining your internet service, setting up an account with a movie streaming service, purchasing, downloading and managing a finite hard drive space convenient. I do not like someone telling me what I can and cannot do with something I purchased. Oh, sorry, mom, I can't let you borrow this movie. Netflix won't let me. Laaaammmeeee! Physical media is its own storage medium. I can loan it out, play it on any machine I want, sell it, trade it, and I own it. Not just purchase a license for limited usage. Do other people realize this? Or are they already getting brainwashed that DL is the "wave of the future"?
