I totally agree. I live in a rented home in West Gastonia and am tired of homes around me drawing trash. I know for certain that my landlord, who owns two other homes on my street, does not run ANY check on prospective tenants. EVERY landlord should be required to run background, credit and eviction history on everyone who wants to rent one of their homes. Although someone could have the home rented in someone else's name, a landlord could simply check up on the home periodically for a while to ensure that the people who claim to be living there, really are. If you own something, anything, it is your responsibility to make sure it is taken care of and is making a positive contribution.

I work for a great company. We do very extensive background checks. We also get rid of the trouble. We turn our home and apartments into a nice and safe place to live. I take pride in making our community safe and so does the company I work for.

I have lived in a west Gastonia neighborhood for 17yrs. I own my home and all the homes in my neighborhood were, at one time, owned by retired mill-workers. I've seen the owners pass and the homes sold and turned into rental properties, which in and of itself is not an issue; however, I have seen drug activity, prostitution and beautiful homes being trashed because the landlords only care about getting their dollar each month. Homeowners, like myself should not have to see their property value decrease annually instead of increase due to the crime associated with the area. I believe landlords should be held accountable for their tenants. Considering Main Street runs directly through our neighborhood; you would think that the city would want to keep a clean, respectable reputation for the area.
