I heard that they advertised for a police chief - one officer. Then heard that the mayor is deciding on his own to possibly hire a dirty cop especially after council is split in this decision. They wanted somone outside of Gaston with 10+ yrs experience. Someone on gastongic's website inquiried about accomplishments, service record, and reputation of the candidates?

You are so right Amber, We need you to get involved with Gaston's GIC

Through establishing taxes in Gaston
We would also like to see a Community building or complex that is open to all organizations for planning, organizing, hosting, business meetings, parties, reunions, welcoming our soldiers home, emergency shelter (CERT), emergency kitchen, Town headquarters, home commings, dipatch for elderly assistance, helping our citizens with job searches, public classes........The list is nonstop for a facility of this nature.

Please ask me to go on..........

Vote Stephen Dailey/GIC for Town Council 2011.

For what purpose? Why would someone do such a thing? I do not even know who YOU are so why are you so important that someone would try to assume your ID?
What would that do?

I am sooo glad you posted this because it answers my question; I see others have had the same problem. So is it an invalid post from wltx topix or the person you refer to in your post. Seems odd to me, I was concerned my 3rd grader was posting on here. I have to say that after researching this GIC group everyone keeps talking about I can see why you refer to them as you do. Thanks so much for the heads up on them; it seems to be a common trend on these recent forums to become subject of public degrading. My concern too is for those he is representing. I only know a few people on that website and I cannot imagine they would agree. Again, thank you, and I guess I can resume with my comments. People like this give that town a bad name. So glad I relocated.

Someone please explain the need for a Police Department in Gaston? You could patrol the whole town on a bicycle with a potato gun. If the town of Gaston built a brand new Police Department complete with new cells and new patrol cars, criminals would just rob the people OUTSIDE of that imaginary town limit.

Now, if we want to be realistic, we will all have to admit that the majority of business handled by the Gaston Police Department came in the area of writing traffic tickets. Do you really want a town struggling to find its identity to become known as another small town speed trap? It is not good for business. As members of this community, there comes a moment where you have to decide what is best for your community. At this point and time, Gaston needs the influx of business. We need jobs. The last thing we need is to add to our potential debt by adding or reinstating new departments. The mayor and town council should concern themselves with determining what infrastructure would be needed to entice new business, create jobs, and this will build potential for future revenue, allowing for other things.

Lets not continue to place the cart in front of the horse.

TMC, whoever you are, you are one of the folks that we need running for Council. How right you are in your assessments. But Council is not going to concern themselves with anything that will take their time and work. This is prooven over past history. Appearantly all they are there for is to say Yea or Nay once a month and then disappear till next month.

They have to hire a policeman to write tickets for the clerk to process. She has already been working for 6 wks at $20,000 a year but has no tickets to process. This is the same woman that quit months ago because she wasn't making enough part time. Council voted to increase the salary of the other clerk who would start handling all the work. Now we have 2 again at more pay for both but where is the extra work coming from? They were so busy in there that they were able to close for the whole week last week! Did council vote to pay them for that? Does that apply to new hires on the job less than 2 months? This all sounds like the same behavior we had before in that Town Hall.

To a large degree, I agree with you TMC. I can see your point. What I don't like about what you've said is two-fold. First, you post from Lexington. Do you really have a vested interest in the residents of Gaston? Second, running down a little town like Gaston when it has great potential for the future is just plain rude. People will not locate to Gaston if they do not believe that the town has the ability to protect them, their families, and their property. Gaston is too big a town to not have a police officer.

Peace.

Where I receive my internet access has very little to do with where I reside. While I do not live inside the imaginary line that constitutes the town limits, I have a Gaston address, pay my monthly water bill to the Gaston Water District, send my son to Sandhills Middle (which is not located in the Gaston town limits) and do business less than 200 feet from the line that would make me a "member" of the town of Gaston. So, before you climb up on a pedestal, realize that where an ISP is registered has very little to do with the actual location of the person making the post. This post will again list me as a Lexington resident while I am less than 3 minutes from the Double B.

Second, Gaston IS too small to have a Police force. Why? It cannot pay its current bills. The population of the town of Gaston is under 1,500 people. Now, I cannot state this as fact because I have not personally viewed any of the Town of Gaston's revenue/expense statements, so I have to assume that Gaston generates revenue at this point from two areas, any profit made by the Water Department (which should be owned by the town) and business licenses. Seriously, a news article stated that the town was $400,000 in debt. If the past administration embezzled $50,000 between them, that still means the town was running at a $350,000 loss over that time period. How does the police force generate revenue? They write those lovely violations of the "Town Ordinance" to motorists. The town of Gaston does not need to become known as another speed trap. We just don't. We have had enough bad publicity.

What needs to happen is the people need to take a deep breath, step back a little, quit bickering and name calling, and look for a way to get out of this mess.
