Why does McDowell County continue to waste such funding on stupid and unecessary things?? How about taking some of that money and giving this city some things it actually needs for once?! For example: some more apartment buildings since we've lost quite a few over the years, or a nice rec center, or hell a pay phone somewhere in the downtown area would be nice!

This place is run by incompetent morons and they have the nerve to wonder why this place has gone to shit. Smh.

The courthouse is old and has not had a facelift since Sid Hatfield got shot there almost 92 years ago.

You are not up to times as far as payphones are you? They are about extinct.

I don't live there but I do think the courthouse needs a update I was there last year and its in terrible condition. But they are lots of things there that needs updated. They need to try and bring it back to life try and get some business back in those empty buildings.

You burst no ones bubble, I doubt you even read the article, you are more concerned about interior decorating which is only a mask for the real problem, deterioration, very common among buildings that has not went through such an upgrade in a century.

It is not handicapped accesible either, McDowell needs a more modern courthouse to work with

Um...sometimes people either lose their cell or maybe leave it at home on occasion? Emergencies CAN happen during such a time (or any other time) ya know......?

In 2000 there were over 2 million payphones in the US, today it is less than half a million, the major phone systems got out of the payphone industry, not producing enough Benjamins to even maintain and upkeep their phones, far as I know they are no longer being made.

I agree there should be a payphone in certain places but it will have to be for public service with the proceeds used for upkeep of the equiptment and may not even reach that much, it was a great 20th century thing but its time has passed.

Why don't you talk/ask the Mayor to do something good for Welch?
I haven't seen anything new that's been done.

And there's plenty of apartment building's. They are all empty.

THEY ARE WORKING ON GETTING THE ELECTRIC IN TYSON TOWERS NOW AND MAYBE BY NEXT YEAR THE OFFICES ON THE BOTTOM FLOOR WILL BE OPEN FOR MORE BUSINESSES TO COME IN. THEY ARE GOING TO REBUILD THE APARTMENTS BACK AS WELL BUT IT TAKES TIME TO RESTORE . AS FAR AS THE THINGS GOING ON AROUND TOWN. THEY NEED TO FIX THE ROADS. I DONT KNOW WHO IS IN CHARGE OF THE CITY ROADS BUT THE WAY IT SLOPES DOWN IN FRONT OF MY YARD IT MAKES IT A BIG MUDHOLE WHEN IT RAINS. PLUS THERE IS A POT HOLE THAT EVERYONE HITS WHEN THEY COME DOWN THROUGH HERE. THE ROADS ARE BAD ENOUGH AND HAVING THOSE BIG COAL TRUCKS COMING DOWN THROUGH HERE FLYING IN THE MORNING SHOULD STOP. IF THE COPS WOULD SIT DOWN THERE AT THE POST OFFICE IN THE MORNING THEY COULD GET AT LEAST 5 TRUCKS AN HOUR SPEEDING DOWN THIS ROAD . IT IS RIDICULOUS. THE SPEED LIMIT IS 25 NOT 55

The city police killed Welch by allowing dope dealers, loitorers, pan handlers, and bums to hang out on the sidewalks and ask for a "Qwoter" or a "dolla" or yell out obcenities when you're walking into Murphy's or other stores with your mother, wife, children or girlfriend. No! The police helped kill downtown Welch as much as anything else!

Its long overdue..... Besides it need to be done to comply with the public needs, more handicap assailable.... Although I bet it would be cheaper to build a new courthouse, I could be wrong.... it will be interesting to see the work done the proposed walk-way over the road connecting the the other buildings the elevators... Do anyone knows What other counties has to make improvements to their courthouses yet??

Why can't the courthouse employees park in the city parking lot across the river and wall or either the county buy a small shuttle bus to take then to work on the hill? It would allow citizens more parking space close to the courthouse.

slum lords abound in welch. why? 2 reasons. the filthy people that do not clean the apt. and those that do not pay the rent and use the court system to delay evictions. so why invest money for trash to trash? people that do not clean their homes trash them and live in the trash until legally evicted. take a look around here filth and trash everywhere. to dam lazy to bag it and toss it in a receptacle! poverty is one thing total lack of self respect where you live is another.
.
poverty is acceptable because you are too stupid to get a free trade skill, or education to better yourself. why? generations of on the government dole is easier then going to school and learning.
.
the people that owned the apts here let them fall to ruin and now it will take millions to repair and replace. they should be torn down.
.
as for rebuilding and making nice.... take a look at what shed did more then six months ago on south 52 in superior. those houses are still unoccupied. why? no decent man or woman to occupy them? no credit worthy risks? rather to be emptied and not trashed then to build and occupy to make yet another eyesore in this god forsaken dump called welch? frankly I wish someone would squat there.
.
sooner or later those houses will be ransacked for the contents. and shed has only itself to blame. talk about waste. at least a hundred thousand or more gone to rot as those houses sit there and decay!
.
as for the court house. decades of decay happen to all buildings. the courthouse is where history happened. it should be preserved. federal law decreed that every, state, local, county, and federal, building be up to code. welch is not the exception to the rule. they do not have a choice.

if things are taken care of ...preventative maintainance then there would not have been a 75 years long wait for modernization of public buildings like the court house.
.
as for needing place to rent.....I suggest that every apt owner collect one months rent in escrow and a minimum of $200 cleaning deposit along with the first months rent. with that much money in the hand of the landlord, and the renter knows he or she can lose it upon violating the terms of rental agreement then maybe these deadbeats would think twice about violating agreements and trashing rental property. if the rent is not paid when due then within 24 hours the renter and its belongs are in the street and they lost the deposits. the magistrates will back up the landlord on this. just get it in writing. make the terms to suit you and protect you. list what violations are. enforce the lease agreement.
.
there are lots of places to rent here in welch. the problem is the reputation of the prospective tenant. once your known for trashing property, being filthy, causing disturbances, drugs and or alcohol use and abuse, and not paying your rent you wind up on the street, in a shelter where they won't take your filth, or crammed 15 people into a 2 or 3 bedroom trailer. of course it is trashed and filthy with bugs and vermin.
