The ATA is a false martial art system that simply buys the latest programs from other viable martial arts systems and passes them off as their own. It is a total joke and they charge more than anyone should ever pay period. They promote 5 year old kids to black belt which is a complete joke. Don't waste any money at this rip off place.

I do agree that ATA schools are vastly bad but not all of them are. I also agree that a belt must be earned and not bough and that's the mistake most ATA schools are making.
I strongly disagree with the way people bash other schools and/or styles. Martial arts or any combat disciplines is based on the individual and his skills.
I was born into a TKD family and TKD is what I know and teach but by no means do I feel TKD is the best. I do feel that even though each arts starts with a different foundation all martial arts become similar the farther you advance.
That being said, there are so many different people out there, it is impossible to cater to all. I had student quit because training was too tough. I also had some student quit because they said it wasn't tough enough. You have some who train inertial arts for the flashy things and award (belt and patches) and would give up if acquiring a black belt takes too long. You have some who are in it for the true discipline of martial arts.
Sadly people in the US always want things fast (waiting 60 seconds for a microwave dinner is too long for some) that is ATA schools are doing so well. As for me, I rather loose students than awarding them something they don't deserve.

If you think ATA is watered down, then have a look at Victory Martial Arts. When I joined I was surprised just how fast I was able to advance it was easy. The Curriculum provided by ATA was watered down and the instructor's were not even black belts.
Ironically no one ever questions the validity of the Victory Martial Arts.
Its a money machine each and every time you turn around your paying for something. And if they don't like it your thrown out.
All I can say if you think ATA is bad try Victory Martial Arts...

If you were promised a certain thing, or led to believe you would receive a certain thing, but did not receive said certain thing you should sue for breach of contract.

The following are suggestions on finding a GOOD martial arts school:
1. Make sure you can see a group class in action. If the school has group classes but does not let you see them in action STAY AWAY.
2. If you are planning on having your children attend, MAKE SURE THERE ARE ALWAYS ADULTS PRESENT. It is not unusual to seen teens or young children assisting in instruction but there should an adult instructor calling the shots. A school that does not or, worse still, discourages you from seeing your children in process should be avoided.
3. DO NOT SIGN CONTRACTS FOR A TIME PERIOD OF GREATER THAN ONE YEAR NO MATTER WHAT!

First off, if your kid was a State Champ and can not keep up with others in your new school then I would say your son has a problem..
My son is a 1st Degree and competes in the ATA and Open tournaments, and does VERY well...
If you are truly a parent of an ATA student and you had a bad experience then you should have done something about it. It DOES NOT take a rocket scientist to see that they are NOT learning proper technique..
You sound more like a troll attempting to stir up controversy...
It seems it didn't quite hit you that they were an ATA champ. if they did well in the ATA, and it turned out to be worthless elsewhere, that does not speak well for the ATA no matter how you twist it.

What's wrong with you? It is NOT the paren't responsibility to make sure their child has good technique, that is the responsibility of the INSTRUCTOR. that is what they are being PAID for. That the instructor failed to provide good instruction and proceeded to give the poor student a rank DOES reflect badly on the ATA, no matter how you twist it.

I took the ATA taekwondo from 1981-1994. It was awesome. It was real martial arts, with some amazing instructors. I just started back with the ATA this week and their has been many changes, as you would expect from a company that has grown to this level. They are a huge organization and not every school is of the same quality. Some of their schools are top of the line in this country. Chief Master Mike Caruso's school is one of the best you will ever find. Granted, maybe ATA should have better quality control over their satellites. But its all what you put into it. If you want to be good and learn how to apply what you learn to a real life setting, you can. Its all what you put in... And what you want to get out of your training.

The ATA is a form of "taekwondo" that is not recognized by many if not all of the martial arts governing bodies but their own. It and the belt ranks are not recognized by the country of Korea, World Taekwondo Federation, Kukkiwon, International Taekwondo Federation, or the International Olympic Committee as a martial art. Individuals interested in martial arts should do research on the ATA, as most of it is negative, before beginning any training.

My kids are at an ata as soon as my contract is finish I will get them out of there and look for one that has nothing to do with ATa , yes they guive bells to everybody even if they don't know forms, weapons I had seeing black belts in conpetitions doing weapons or forms like green or purple bells the reason they guive bells is because every time they get a bell a parents has to pay $60 dollars and once they are camell bell you need to buy a uniform that cost $185 is only about money, even to be state or distrct champs is about points meaning the more competitions you go (spend more money) no how good you really are

We were dooped into signing a contract with Bartlett ATA and not told up front that there would be a fee for everything on top of the monthly fee. We have to limit our grocery and electric bill in order to pay the outrageous ATA fees. Very disappointing.

My daughter attended ATA in Delaware for 7 years and got a lot of benefits from the program. I would not change a thing or take a penny back for all that she had learned and accomplished from this program. She was in the leadership program and xma. She learned skills that she now uses today and that helps her get through life. I have a younger daughter who I may sign up. I think that people who complain about ATA and the program have had children who were unsuccessful and want to blame the program. Some children just can't seem to do well and/or the parents have a negative impact on their children while they are in the program. For my family, it was money well spent. The only regret I have was to not have spent more money having her more involved in tournaments and such. She has been State Champion twice. For a parent who is disciplined enough to make sure their child is fully involved in the program at ATA, their child will benefit tremendously. To get the full benefit of this program, the parent and child has to be involved enough. There is a lot of hard work involved in obtaining a black belt but it can be fun for both child and parent as long as everyone has a positive attitude about the program. The cost is not high if you realize the benefits your child will receive. My daughter is a 3rd Degree Black Belt. Give it a try and if you are positive about it and be involved..you and your child will love it!

Ha ha...seriously the people who complain about the ATA are doing so because they do not teach an actual martial art and it is all about making money with them. Your child was duped into a leadership program which cost you a lot. Your child was taught XMA which is nothing in relation to martial arts at all. It is only dance, gymnastics and some moves borrowed from martial arts. It is a fact that the ATA is not recognized by ANY martial arts organization outside of their own. Korea does not recognize them as a form of Tae Kwon Do and their founder was thrown out of the WTF for many immoral reasons. Your daughter, unless she is 25 years old and has trained for at least 15 years cannot be an official 3rd degree either but I am sure you paid for it. Total horse pucky. The ATA is a fraud and rip off.

Hi,

Sorry you got a bum deal. I have learned not all ATA's are the same. I have never signed a contract. As for Camo belt. We paid $165 for all her sparring gear and 4 weapons and a nice thick duffle bag. She used the same uniform. They do a lot of extras fun things for kids without extra cost. I know a few people who switched to ATA because it was more affordabld. So I am starting to think all ATAs don't charge the same. They have been the best thing for my Daughter. They have taught her self confidence. She has no more bullies. As for earning her belts she had to work hard for them. She almost didn't get her red belt. I have seen allot of kids have tested who did not get decided belts. I know almost half of a class of 17 not pass their Black belt testing. You have to do 2 forms which are around 45 steps a piece. Spar 3 partners. Spar the Master and break 2 boar. My daughters school is big into technique and power. They will get you if you are not using it. I have been to tournaments. And have seen the diffrent techniques. A school just a state away from us I swear they were just taught to kill. I feel bad you had a bad experience with ATA. If there was a contract with mine I would have said no. But there was not and we have been happily there for 2 1\2 years. We are a family :-) Good luck to you, hope you find a school that will be wonderful for your children. Do not make judgments on peoples comments on the internet. Go to the school yourself. Watch some classes, ask lots of questions. Keep those kiddos in Karate. Teaches some good lessons :-)

That's it? Two forms? Spar three people? Break a couple of boards? What a total joke. A good school will require the student to perform ALL the forms, spar for a long time, perform self defense against a non-compliant attacker and so much more. The ATA is a total joke.

ATA is very bad they just wan your money in any way its true they guive bells to kids who doesn't even go to class for weeks, who doesn't know their forms and they make you buy weapons : prices $65 , $85and uniforms , $135, $185 and this one they said you need to have it once you get your camell bell , they start teaching kids at 3 years old I look at the kids during a class and they were just playing and believe or not , all of them will get there color bells even though they don't know anything , my kid goes there and he started when he was 4 well he is good but is because I train him at home as well since I know martial arts not from ATA but I learn from a KOREAN DOJO and he is getting his black bell at 5 years old its just that where I live there is not a karate or kun fu school oh I forget to say that during tournaments you can see black belts with no technique at all not in forms or weapons its just so sad to see how a school doesn't care about really teaching the proper technique and self defence that we are looking for, instead they are too busy in trying to figure out how to get more money out of the parents , they are just like vanpires sucking money like blood its ridiculous , once my contract is finish am out of there
