It's a good changefor Mercersburg...I was in Jane's Market one time and it smelled horrible...Like old meat....I never smelt that when I walk into a Food Lion....Also, maybe they can make it brighter inside...Dark and gloomy now...

I think that this change will go both ways on levels of good and bad. Yes there will be more of a selection of products and the bakery will be bigger and fresher. The BIGGEST downfall I think will be the meat department. I for one love the service of the meat counter employees and that you can go in and pick which cut of meat you want! I hate buying packaged meat. Other than the other groceries I guess I will have to travel to Kline's or the Butcher Shoppe to purchase my meat now!

It would be better if Giant or Sunnyway would buy the dump known as Jane's Market. Maybe they could have also added some much needed gas pumps in Mercersburg. I don't understand why Sheetz has not come to town and run out many of Mercersburg's "shabby" establishments. Just me thinking outloud.

Yeah, Giants or Sunnyway would be awesome in mercersburg...they would make a killing since there's no other grocery store unless you head to greencastle or chambersburg

Mercersburg could use a major facelift

I saw over the weekend that Mercersburg Tire & Auto moved out of town also. There isn't much left but the 6 bars and 1 so called gas station.

Just an FYI you can get meat beyond the packaged meat. You just have to go in when a butcher is there.

They better think about this move since in the past 2 years 2 gas stations out of business, Mercersburg tire & auto moving out, craft shop on the corner of seminary street closed, restaurant across from bank, and the pub closed and now my wife just told me that Curves is closing the end of the month. Sounds like the town is just shuting down slowly to me.

And when you can only go in in the evenings and the only ones working in the meat dept at Foodlion are school kids and they are not permitted to run the cutter/slicer due to age you are forced to buy the packaged meat!! My family and I also only buy our meats from Jane's. Everytime I have bought fresh ground burger , other than at Jane's, Kline's and the Butcher Shoppe, it has either been too fatty or better yet bones!! Yipee, nothing better than taking a bite out of your burger and find a bone. I do agree with some of the other posters, Mercersburg does need a much needed facelift. I still can't believe that McDonalds was able to come to town. But then again that place is another horror story in itself!! A sheetz would be great and maybe another fast food restaurant.

You can always call the store during the day and they can prepare your order for pickup in the evening.

A Wendy's or Burger King in Mercersburg would be great. I would much rather go hunger than eat at McDonald's.

Good riddance to the downtown gas stations. Those properties have nice possibilities.

Last I saw - Mercersburg Tire and Auto was still in Mercersburg...just a different location.

Flannery's is doing very well. The Mansion House now serves food on the weekends. The JB Pub just reopened. In October Col. Murphy's(next to the Mansion House) will reopen with live music every weekend. The bowling alley is gone - and now a bank. And it was just announced that Janes will be replaced by a Food Lion. Dentists, Healthcare/Doctors all still here.

Certainly seems bustling to me...

There has always been an ebb and flow of restaurants and gift shops. But - If anything, the town is getting bigger and stronger.

Maybe the Curves in St Thomas is enough?

Maybe they will have a strip mall with the food lion (the land in back of Janes was For Sale and I heard that Food Lion was very interested in the land there) I really wish Mecersburg would get with the 21st century and stop running business' out of town (Pizza Shop on the square - The little gift shop that used to be on the square - The Ice Cream Shop that used to be by Mburg Police Dept) These business' bring jobs and create revenue for Mercersburg, if the kids have jobs they will spend money and they'll be off the streets and not getting into trouble. I for one will be much happier with a Food Lion anyday over Janes.

I agree with the comment that a Sheetz in Mercersburg would be awesome. Sheetz stores provide one-stop shopping on a lot of levels and, in a pinch, you can get decent "fast food" there. The addition of McDonald's to Mercersubrg has been OK, but the mistakes made, the time it takes to get your order, and the frequent "sorry, we're out of" this or that or "sorry, our ice cream machine is down" or "sorry, we have no Coke" or "sorry, we are out of French dressing" makes it always an adventure. The Waynesboro McDonald's is, personally, my favorite for service and accuracy. Giant would be a welcome addition as well - the Giant in McConnellsburg is where I've shopped since it opened - huge selection, fresh items, good service. Jane's never really had any of that although I do go there from time to time for milk or eggs or some other staple I'm out of. The high school kids are preoccupied with gossip, what they did over the weekend, and they seem to like to make fun of the customers. What Mercersburg needs is a restaurant that provides reasonably-priced food for the population that is overwhelmingly conservative, food that isn't trendy like paninis or funky salads - Romeo's is great, but another sandwich shop like the Olympia in Chambersburg, would be a welcome addition. I'm actually trying to come up with a plan to open such an establishment - open for breakfast and lunch only, with baked goods that are as fattening as you want, with soups and sandwiches that are "normal" - and reasonably priced. I think that Mercersburg can support something like this.

6 bar room establishments vs. 1 grocery store and 1 gas station doesn't say much for the character of this town. How sad. I prefer Rutter's over Sheetz.

A lot of places are leaving Mercersburg because of the property taxes! I'm not too big on Food Lion either. I seen some really shabby stuff in that store chain too.

Daily Horoscope for December 7

Leo

If there have been slight tensions or frictions between you and a loved one recently, this is the perfect day to get them out into the open, thrash them out and then forget about them. Things could get quite heated in the process but don't worry because they'll work out all right in the end. Put as much energy into kissing and making up as you did in arguing!
