Although unconfirmed, after hearing the news that the ward would be closed the patients went crazy.

The current administration does not care about the community their facility serves. They have no ties to it, and are in place to clean house and turn a profit.

The psych unit has not had a full census in years, they were not usually agreeable to take patients from the Leominster ED, requiring the patients to spend many hours, possible days in the ED waiting for beds to open somewhere else. Staff psychiatrists have refused to evaluate ED patients in the ED because it doesn't pay, and the adminstration refused to admit patients in the ED to hospital beds because of safety concerns????. It is a cluster f%$#k, and will not get better anytime soon!!

Look for more homeless mentally ill, more mentally ill in prisons (the new asylums) and some psychotic folks placed in understaffed nursing homes which is a growing trend and dosn't help ANYONE involved. We want tax cuts in debt ridden times? Well this is the new 3rd world America we are facing folks!

Perhaps "Insider Beliefs" has some valid point regarding poor disposition of patients from Leominster ER to Burbank's psych unit. If any of "Beliefs" mentioned issues are valid then Health Alliance should knock some heads together and hand out some pink slips until it has a mental health unit that is responsive and coordinated to work with the needs of the acute facility and community.

However, in the last couple of weeks I was in the ER with a family member who was in severe pain and distress from an acute abdomen. After a 4 hour wait for admission to the ER an additional 1/2 before being seen by a nurse, I get the sense that the ER at Leominster is being bogged down by: those using the ER for non emergency problems because they don't have personal primary care physicians; primary care physicians and specialists instructing their patients who call with problems to "go to the ER"; and now, being the terminus for all the mental health/drug and alcohol addled patients who have no place to go while the hospital ER can't find adequate placement once they are triaged and evaluated.

Bottom line: We have a traffic jam in Leominster and this hospital is way, way to small and inadequate to accommodate the needs of the community.

You are correct. Redirecting patients to a better hospital is shamefull. And God forbid a business for trying to turn a profit...shame on them! I thought the purpose of private industry was to shoot for break-even or maybe even to loose money.

For your sake I hope a delusional patient doesn't walk up to you and spit aids in your face, then again maybe I do it only adds to the profits.

Mt Woman,

Your concerns are very valid and UMASS has been consistently working toward moving as much as they could from Burbank Campus to the Leominster Campus, so we may see it continue to worsen.

The laws which allow anyone to use the ER in a hospital as a place for minor medical care instead of going to a doctor's office will also continue to cause these situations at the ER to worsen.

UMASS has stated that they believe this new business model with moving resources to the ER at Burbank will serve the needs better...only time will tell.
