As long as they don't end up at the PBS. Worst shelter in the area.

Living near Rollstone Hill I used to see lots of strays. A couple years ago I started seeing and more so hearing coyotes. I see a lot less stray cats now...

Fisher cats will also keep the stray population down.

Never once have I smelled cat urine walking down the street. Nor have I ever stepped in Cat sh*t, ever. Could this be an exaggeration for effect?

Run the story in the Lowell sun. Lowell has not had a problem with strays since the 80's

What do you do, when your neighbor has over 5-13 living in her house, and they are crapping and peeing on your property and porch furniture. There should be some type of fine for having too many felines in your household. They don't hesitate to call DCF when there are too many kids, what about cats ?

I'm all for spaying and neutering stray cats...I've always taken care of mine as kittens but I'm wondering how they are telling the strays from the outdoor cats. My cat spends most of his time outside because he prefers it, since we're up on Rollstone Hill there are a lot of strays in the neighborhood. I just want to make sure that no one is going to capture my cat and take it somewhere else. Is this something they are checking before they start carting off people's cats?
hey there

I would imagine they will not going around to each house checking to see if a cat has a "home"-- although your cat enjoys being outdoors, it can be a very dangerous place for him. You risk his life every time you let him out.

1 Your cat should not be outside. Average cat who goes outside only lives about 8yrs where a cat that doesnt go out lives 13+..... And 2 if your cat does go outside it should have a collar and I.D. tag on it so if your cat gets hit by a car or something else happens to the cat someone will know who to call ! Bring your kitty in :( My 4 yr old cat I adopted 2 yrs ago use to be an outdoor cat til his 3 legged kitty friend got eaten by a coyote and she had 5 kids who always left the door open and didnt want him to get eaten as well. I have had him for 2 yrs now and he does not go outside unless on a harness with adult supervision !

Outdoor cats are just prey for coyotes, fishercats, and cars.

To clear up any questions or concerns..
1. Fitchburg has NO money set up to take in cats, stray, feral or owner surrender. ZERO $$ for cats
2. They are feed in the same area all the time, trapped, spay/neutered, vaccinated, tiny nip in ear for future ID then released after a 24 hr recovery period in a warm place, continued to be fed.
3. All costs are donated. No money is charged to the city.
4. Lowell doesn't have a huge problem, Fitchburg is modeling what they have been doing for YEARS!
5. Please do not make unkind comments towards our animal control officer....this volunteer program is with the Board of Health dept not ACO.

Good people work long hours volunteering to help animals in our city from food, shelter, warm beds, shots and spay/neuter. Trying to educate the public about spaying/neutering cats & dogs, where to find low to no cost clinics.

The Fitchburg budget does not support Felines. Animal Control can only do what's in the budget. The city has NO place to take in cats. Now our Animal Control has a 100% volunteer organization to call for help!

Unless you care to step into the boots of Animal Control and witness what they see, don't say useless.
