The Epilepsy Foundation of Long Island is pleased to announce the grand opening of their premier Article 31 Mental Health Clinic. The inaugural ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on May 27, 2010, at the Foundation’s Garden City headquarters.
In attendance was County Executive Ed Mangano, who described the clinic as “an important partnership between the public and private sectors, it offers those struggling with epilepsy and other disorders one professional clinic to address all issues.”
County Legislator Rose Marie Walker was also present at the ceremony, and echoed Mangano’s views on the importance of this kind of resource.
“Rather than have to go to different places for treatment, here they can go to one center to get the help they need,” said Walker.“It’s great for the county to be a part of this.”
The new clinic is the first of its kind in the region, where licensed social workers will apply their expertise to patients dealing with epilepsy and/or other mental health disorders in one location.
“This was something very much needed on Long Island,” said Jennifer Colbert, Director of Clinical Services at the Foundation.“We are very excited to provide mental health services in Nassau County.”
Thomas M. Hopkins, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of the Foundation, quoted Winston Churchill in expressing that “if we are together nothing is impossible,” describing the concerted effort between the public and private sectors. It is through “the successful alliance of Nassau County, the New York State Office of Mental Health, and the Epilepsy Foundation of Long Island,” that such a resource is available to Long Island residents, said Hopkins.
About the Epilepsy Foundation of Long Island: The Epilepsy Foundation of Long Island was founded in 1953 by a group of parents who were determined to see their children lead productive and satisfying lives. Today, the Foundation offers a Day Habilitation program; a residential program spanning Nassau and Suffolk Counties; a Community Services program providing Medicaid Service Coordination, Respite, and Residential Habilitation. In addition, through our Community Education and Outreach Programs, the Foundation educates the public, teachers, health care professionals, and businesses about epilepsy, and serves as an advocate for those with the disorder.

Okay, finally, a forum item that belongs in every county community because it's a wonderful opportunity for those who suffer epilepsy and worth knowing there is a wonderful new facility to address this important issue. This is the kind of thing that belongs in Sea Cliff Topix and all others.
