I do not drink and after reading this I am thinking that administration went to far.OMG it was a T shirt--now if thay had come to class drunk or had been arrested off campus while driving then ok but give me a break. Go after the kids in the john who are smoking and snorting and yes there are those that do on school property. When my son was in school a girl came every day to class and drank from a Mountain Dew bottle full of booze she was a functional drunk and graduated...........Next thing you know they will be making all the students blow to see if they are drunk before class starts.I know under age drinking is a problem but this is a bit over the top.

I'm confused. Are you complaining about the girl coming to school drunk? Then why would you be opposed to having students 'blow' before class?

Kudo's to this school for having some common sense and holding these kids accountable for their actions.
To many, this was a 'prank' or senior thing, however, too often we hear 18 yr olds say that they are not respected and treated like adults. Well, welcome to the real world Seniors of 2008!
I also like the idea of having one of the parents sign the paper they have to write. I hope these parents realize that their child (sic) did this to get attention, whether it be to get a laugh out of others or to wake their parents up to the idea that as an adult, the law does not apply to them (students).
They can have their freedom of speech just as I enjoy that same freedom to be able to post this. However, what I say or what they do all results in what kind of character you have. If I was thinking of hiring one of these students, I would wonder if their attitudes toward the law would tell me what kind of employee they would be. Just something to think about.

I think what I read in this comment is just about the dumbest thing I will hear today. Are you claiming that the shirt someone wears is a true testament to his character? That not wearing a t-shirt will result great moral fiber? How about letting these kids blow off some steam. They will drink or not based on how they were raised, not based on knee-jerk reactions of misguided school officials who pander to the whims of the local religious right. These kids will only be angry at this requirement. And they will have to do it in order experience a once in a lifetime thing like their senior prom, further inciting their anger. The only thing they learn will be how stupid some people can act over little things like t-shirt logos. These kids live in the same world we live in. They watch the same news, see the same tragedies. Now some idiot school official has added a new small tragedy to their lives. Beating down children for their laughter? Once we live in a dictatorship this will be ok I guess.

Obviously you live in a different world yourself. By the way I have no desire to strike alcohol from our society,(and I've had family killed by drunk drivers!!) but if you haven't noticed alot of adults can't handle it, much less a bunch of 18yr old kids. They chose the wrong place to "vent" about how cool they think being drunk is. Don't worry unfortunatly a percentage of them will kill and be killed drunk driving, no need to push it on them any earlier than it already is.

"misguided school officials who pander to the whims of the local religious right."

thinkful, I think you topped cheers 2u for "dumbest things".

I'm not religious at all but I'd like to know how in the hell could you bring the religious right into this debate? Are you one of those people that blame all the woes of society on religion?

If the kids want to wear a humorus t-shirt I see it as no big deal.

Are you kidding me? What will it be next. "I am sorry, your t-shirt is from your church camp. You can't wear that here."

I could understand if the shirts you could see thru, and the girls weren't wearing bras.

If they want to play on words, let them. At least they are aware that there is a law, and know that it is .08.

It is a phase, and they will grow out of it. It isn't causing them to drink.

When I was in school most of the kids wore the "coed naked" tshirts. I was a cheerleader and had one that said "Cheer loud to excite the crowd - Coed Naked Cheerleading"

They are out of their line in the punishment.

This isn't a play on free speech. These t-shirts are advertisements. They are banned from schools for that reason.
That being said, the seniors wore the shirts as a prank hopefully knowing there would be some consequences. The administration has to dole out some punishment as it is a known rule by all who attend the school.
The prank was successful and the administration got their say as well.

I don't quite understand your post. What are they advertising? I didn't see any brand name on the shirts.

This is so silly. The writing that they had on their shirts was not offensive at all. The school administration are making themselves look like idiots.

Currently I'm wearing a shirt, which was commercially purchased, which says "Guinness - The Big Pint - Size Matters" would I have gotten in trouble for wearing that to highschool school 10 years ago? I mean, it promotes alcohol! THE SHAME!

Apparently the school admin has nothing better to do with their time. How about actually doing something for the students or actually catching the bad students doing much worse. This shirt was not bad at all. Give me a break!

Yet Igo to the school to pick up my child and I see kids wearing jeans with the crotch down to there ankles , Girls wearing Hip Huggers showing off there thongs and many other sugestive clothing .
I think all schools should have a dress code. That would end end any further controversy.

no matter how you slice it, teens shouldn't wear shirts that proclaim their intent to drink! If their senior prom was on April 20 and they all wore shirts that said "Class of '08 4/20" with a pot leaf on them, it would be wrong too.

First of all, I grew up in an alcoholic family, so I've seen both sides of alcohol.
Secondly, I am a teacher, I've seen it all.
Thirdly, if children are parented well a t-shirt should be harmless. It has become a form of speech in our society.
AND MY OPINION on the punishment...ridiculous...
NOT ONLY WOULD I HAVE SIGNED THE PAPER, I WOULD HAVE WRITTEN IT FOR MY CHILDREN!!!
If these kids are going to drink, a paper is not going to deter them. I would think they would be more likely to feel powerless in this situation and more inclined to rebel by indulging in the forbidden act. Authoritarian/draconian laws are not very effective.
By the way my kids are model students, citizens. We stay involved with our kids.

I agree with you 100%, some people just need to lighten up and see it for the humor that was intended not for what they try to read into it.

When interviewed, the senior girl that instigated this T Shirt travesty said: "We are seniors and young adults. Cut us some slack for intelligence".
Ask her how much slack she needs to go to Sajewski Funeral Home to view the deceased 20 year old that was killed by a drunk student that followed her T Shirt message?
