Serious storms cause damage and AWACS in Rome
Once again we've had serious storm damage that probably wasn't quite a tornado. Again, it did a lot of damage, uprooting big trees and creating general mayhem.

According to today's Sentinel, the AWACS are skedaddling home unexpectedly.
Rome shouldn't take it personally, in my opinion. Griffiss does have, after all, something flyers are yearning for: uncluttered skies. My guess for the sudden change in plans would be the current state of the world.
As I told my Mom for years while was serving on active duty: Cant't tell you much, but keep watching the news.

Yankee- YOU are dead on! I have read several articles from different sites in New York, and I find it ironic that all three New York politicians that are "up in arms" about AWACS leaving, haven't a clue because NOT A SINGLE ONE HAS SERVED (Or spouse) IN THE MILITARY!! I understand that it was boost to the economy, but the only Oneida Co. is worried about is their little piece of economic stability, and not what the cost-benefit was for the AWACS operating from Griffiss entaled. Additionally, there were many discrepancies in the articles, from the time spent investigating the possibility of using Griffis, to the date that training started, to what was actually executed. I wouldn't hold your breath for an answer from the 4-star at the Air Force, as they really weren't part of the decision making process.

From your monniker and location, I think we can say, "Enuf Said".
The problem with the Rome Locals is, they've long ago forgotten WHY The Griff was here....they think the AF was based here in order to fill local businesses' coffers, and local slumlords' apartments. Need proof? The Local politicians begging for "just a little more time!" rather than paying attention to the Big Picture.
I served for many years here on Griffiss (I don't know why the AF assignments section hated me so). I saw firsthand for years how The Locals used The Griff as a cash cow; how enlisted were cheated and misused; how every stupid son-in-law could manage to land a contract or at least a dismissal-proof job on base. It was no surprise to me when the BRAAC decided to get the hell out of here.
Fly high and straight, my fellow Blue Suiter. Make sure your number of safe landings equals the number of takeoffs. And perhaps I'll have the privilege of buying you a beer sometime.

Aim High Yankee. I cannot tell you how many times I went to bat for one of my troops because some slumlord in Rome pissed and moaned to the First Sergeant over NOTHING. I was stationed in a few places in my career and I NEVER saw the military treated the way they were in Rome. I'm afraid I LMAO after the BRAC made their choice. Rome got what they deserved.
