When Frederique van der Wal, a former Victoria's Secret model, attended designers' shows during New York's Fashion Week last month, she was 'shocked' by the waiflike models who paraded down the catwalk. Read more

'Tis not the thinness that drives the young girls but the rewards and accolades the models receive. They want it too.

Let's face it they don't look good and it is an unabtainable body type- you are either born with it or you have an eating disorder. I heard that alot of these models do have eating disorders. When a young girl is comparing herself to that and she does whatever it takes to loose enough weight to look like that, that is when it becomes unhealthy. When someone speaks of a model, the underlining meaning of being a model means that you are perfect and beautiful. It is sending the message to girls that the only way to have a perfect body is to starve yourself. I think it must stop.

I would prefer it did stop. We have promulgated a false myth that people should be rewarded for their appearance. That requires some public conversation and a change of opinion, is how I see it.

I think that you should be rewarded socially for taking care of yourself, eating healthy and excercising, but the body image displayed by runway models (see the picture on popular news photos on yahoo right now) is not a body of eating right and excercising it is a body of downright starvation. It is sickining. It is exactly what drives young women into anorexia and bullimia. Anyone who looks at the model knows she has an eating disorder. I think the fashion industry is entirely to blame. They are paying a girl for looking like that, and she is obviously starving herself for the gig.

Men don't want to have sex with cows and pigs.
Women need to lose weight and respect their temple that God gave them.
Women that are fat are in contempt, possibly terrorists, they eat the food that is meant for the future generations of society. They should be sterilized to prevent the fall of society, and stop the tilting of the Earth's axis.

Hey I have no respect getting extreamly fat either. Were not taking about thin here, were talking about dangerously thin here. I've found that most men like thin-average size woman with curves. These runway models have the body shape of 12 year old boys. Yada, ya know I thought I was down with ya, but lately you have made a joke of mental illness with comments like that, showing that you can't possibly be working in the field. I also didn't like the comment you made to the person having hallusinations telling him to get off drugs. And I take personal offense to the fact that the way you choose to put this guy down was by making light of antipsychotics and people who need them. "Asshole" is not in the DSM-IV-R.

Yes they do. I've known plenty of nicely shaped girls who were convinced they were too fat.

I am what would be called volumptious. I am size 16, and have curves in all the right places. I am fit and active, I like to dance and cycle, and I think I look nice. My boyfriend thinks so too!!!I can't get clothes to fit easily, as some shops do not go up to size 16. If it were 50 years ago I would be ok, apparantly Marylyn Monroe was also size 16, and she looked great as well!(my hair is nicer than hers though, my hair is like Simply Red!)

I used to be obsessed with my weight, now I have stopped dieting (for ever), and my weight has stabilised. As soon as I stopped dieting I started to lose weight! Diets make people think about food too much - thats why they never work. I think the diet people know that, and they just make money out of people.

Healthy eating isn't encouraged much, it's too easy to buy biscuits sweets and crisps and too hard ro buy fresh fruit and vegetables. People need to feed on proper food, thats why a lot of people get relly overweight, and boredom, and depression. All animals get sick if they are fed the wrong food, and humans are no exception. But the ridiculously stick thin body shape ideal that has been put forward as the ideal shape for far too long makes perfectly proportioned and healthy young people feel ashamed of their bodies. It's ridiculous!

ARE YOU INSANE?? women who are fat are in comptempt and possibly terrorists??? they eat the food that is meant for future generations?? HOW CAN YOU COMPARE A MODEL WHO WEIGHS 88 POUNDS TO A WOMAN WHO WEIGHTS 130 OR 140 AND CLAIM THEY NEED TO LOSE WEIGHT AND RESPECT THEIR TEMPLE GOD GAVE THEM? God doesnt want unhealthy people...fat or too skinny but he also doesnt want judgement... i'm in shock by your message. i hope you were kidding... i'll assume no one can be that close minded and you are indeed kidding. nice one.

so many individuals care so much what others think about them..Those are the ones that lose all self control and become obese. Or the ones that are living in fear knowing they don't have control over anything other then what they put down their throat, or what they refrain from putting down their throat for that matter. I honestly don't beleive that there is any, one women who doesnt ever think about her weight. some are just stronger and know that food is not what makes the world spin.

Lets face it, its all about metabolism. Gluttony goes hand in hand with our consumptive society. Americans , ironically, tend to be the fattest on earth, yet at the same time are the ones that create female anorexic prototype with thier media.

I certainly dont think that being big is a big problem, its only a problem when its related to 'overeating', that is , when it becomes an irrational addiction. Its not okay to be gluttonus.

WIth regrads to that one persons statement about women eating the food of future generations, Im willing to bet men consume more food then women, and are typically the ones for which the slim body type image is propogated.

Its not so much thinking about your wieght, its about living sensibly, exercising and doing what you can with the metabolism youve been given. Its impossible to judge whether a person is gluttonus or just has metabolic problems unless you know them, and hence impossible to see someone in the street and pass judgment on them.

In the spirit of existensialism I will say finally, you cant have your cake and eat it too. All of these luxuries weve earned throughout the past century will most definetly be the death of us. Fast food shortens life expectancy, household cleaners reduce immunity, television makes you uninformed, the list goes on...

Bandura would agree with yadas original statement that "Tis not the thinness that drives the young girls but the rewards and accolades the models receive. They want it too" ...I however only half agree, many women do not see this superficial regard as a reward, but rather see it for what it is. Some are more susceptable to this 'modelling' of 'models' behavior, and their is a barrage of reasons why that may be the case.
