I'm wondering where would I find history on Utica, MS. I grew up there outside of town and left in 1971 when I joined the service. I've been back many times when I visit my folks. It is depressing to see how the town has gone down. Would like to know about the early years, old pictures of people and places. Woul like to see pictures of downtown. There is virtually nothing online about its history. Bloggers may contact me at my email.. diadav45@yahoo.com

I am still looking for reasonable roofer to help fix roof on Depot Street Utica MS

Yup, that's just what Utica needs >>> " let's rebuild the Sports Center & Da Bottom"
It was business in these areas of town that helped ruin Utica and a many a young man. No telling how many assaults and shootings occurred at the Sports Center and Da Bottom.(also known as Depot St.) Please refocus your efforts to improve and rebuild things that will have a positive and lasting effect on the people that still live here. PLEASE!!! |

Thanks for your comments, and I will be in Utica shortly to start rebuilding Depot Street. If you know someone in Utica that can help me with that roof on depot street please notify me. After depot street is completed than we will start to rebuild sport center, I am also hiring managers and help to run both places.

I own the Woodman of the World building that is rented by the antique shop, and when I bought that building in 1999 one push in front of the bulldozer that wiped out most of Depot Street, I had to re-roof the place myself, plus do a lot of expensive interior restoration. No grants, nobody with outside money offering to help. I have a lot of time/money invested in this and other properties in Utica, and so do a few other people who own buildings and businesses in Utica.

Hi Mary,
I lived outside of Utica 3 miles west on hwy 18. We had a store, Dodson's Grocery. Growing up there in the 50s until 1971 I have a vivid memory of Utica, the school, church, my classmates, friends, family. Looking back, it was nice to have grown up there. I accepted a career i the Army but did go back and visited my folks as often as I could. I have an interest in documenting any history of Utica. Newspapers, photos, business names and years of operation, etc. I remember a time where every store front was open. An applicance store, Western Auto, Rexall Drugs, Napa Auto, Jerry's Hardware, County Gas station, Jintney Jungle (I think that's what they called it)... the chevy place, Bank, library, two doctor offices, and a lot more that I'm not mentioning. Information on it's early history through today. Unfortunately it is just a shell of itself for from times gone by. It is a story of a town that met the economic superpowers and did not survive. This fate has happen to even the larger cities, one of them Milwaukee, my home since 1989. Any information or connection you can steer my way would be appreciative. Thanks.. There are suppose to be some kind of help, but I have not found them yet. I have written Congressman Bennie Thompson for some help. If you know of anyone I could write that might give us some assistance please let me know. I am willing to try anything. I would love to help make Utica Mississippi the town my father once knew and loved. carmelitameyers7@live.com

I appreciate your opinion because I never lived in Utica. I will refocus my thought when I rebuild in this area. My understanding was that the people of Utica had no where to go. I will be putting things in Utica for the people of Utica to enjoy. Thanks |

i see that their are a lot of outsider( or people that left because they thought they could have a better life) that would like to see Utica remain the same and have no hope. God has my back and I will suceed. HATER |

I moved to Utica from the mountains 14 hours away and I would love to see it rebuild as a family orientated town.Day care centers , Doctor offices and the little drug store that moved away about 4 years ago. A few good honest people have taken heart to rebuild it . The main street Area is coming along good. Nice colorful awnings, and new buisness , it is a slow tedious process. The men who work daily are good gentlemen and Im sure the Lord will bless their efforts.

1 Your paranoia and bad attitude might defeat your plans if you're not careful. Why be so ugly? If you aren't in Utica (and you're not) then aren't you an outsider? You came on here asking for grant information and other means of assistance to help with your dream of "rebuilding" Utica and never answered why taxpayers should fund that. And what about the people already living in Utica and that have never left there? Does what they want matter? If Utica needs rebuilding isn't it up to them to do it? What if the folks there are content with their run-down once-was town? You sure do presume a lot. Take your hater remark and shove it, you liberal pinhead. |

I have had several conversation with the mayor of Utica that wants to see his town in a better condition, i have also sent contractors to survey the property and to talk to the people in the town, and they have clearly stated that they would like to see new businesses in their town, places for them to go, so they wouldn't have to go outside of the town. I have also talk to other business owner that would like to see the town improve. You are clearly someone with no life and no opinion on this matter. I suggest you crawl back into that hole you came out of. I don't have to leave there I visit enough and I own property there, I bet you don't. Anyone that can not except prosperity is ignorant. I will fulfill my father's and family dreams and make money in the process. I hope your misrable life gets better you know what they say misery loves company, you are barking up the wrong tree. I love life and will see this through. God Bless You! |

Will any of the economic stimulus money be coming into Utica? Perhaps some of it could go toward restoration of homes and buildings. |

1 Thank you for proving my point. Rather than address legitimate questions you simply make personal attacks. Do you have an autographed copy of the Liberal Extremist's Handbook or just a copy of one you printed online? I wish you all the luck in the world following your dream...as long as you're paying for it yourself. |

1 Economic stimulus money = taxpayer money. Why should tax money go to restore homes and buildings in Utica? Some posters here are either so naive or so blinded with Obamamania it's sickening. Always reaching for a handout. Pitiful. |

A revived downtown economic area ultimately increase the tax base and revenue for the citizenry of the community that is revitalized. It is a worthy investment when looking at the overall bigger picture.
