Really? What'd they do, tell you they weren't going to perpetuate your prescription drug habit? Ask you to pay your bill?

"Word has it" may have a good question. But, it may not be the case. I pay a co-pay anytime we go. Lately they always have asked me if I want to pay on my balance. So, I usually pay off whatever they say I owe. Then I found out, my insurance paid it too. So, I waited. Assuming they would send a refund. Nope. It shows up on their computer clearly being paid twice but somehow or another they just keep dancing around that.

Never pay until you receive a statement from your insurance company. Or you receive a bill in the mail from them then keep a copy of the check and do pay with a check.

My kid goes every month to the doctor. My insurance company is slow. So, they usually pay all of them every 3-4 months. But they don't pay ALL of everything plus we have deductible's and co-pays. It gets a little complicated to keep track of.
But, I figured out after a little bit to start comparing them and found out that we have paid for several things that the insurance DID cover.
I agree with you though. Don't pay until you KNOW for sure what you owe. I'm going to start waiting. It's just a little awkward when you are standing at the window and they say "What can you pay on your balance today?" Even though it's usually only $60 at a time bc we already paid a copay of 25. I'm going to start telling them to deduct if from what they OWE me!! I wouldn't go there if I didn't like the pediatrician bc I certainly don't care for the billing dept or the receptionists.

Tell them 1.00 they can't refuse you as long as you make an effort to pay. Also if in fact you have over paid the next time you get a bill go to the billing department. Take all your paper work and pay them what you owe them minus what you overpaid. Also make sure you leave with a receipt that says paid in FULL. From then on if they send you a bill before your insurance statement comes. Only pay a small amount until you receive your insurance statement. Then pay what it says you owe minus what you paid.

I think Holzer engaged in very shady billing practices. I know I've had family members who have been seen for services then receive a bill from Holzer demanding payment without ever sending a bill to the insurance company. Then the billing department tries to scare patients and say "you need to pay your bill or else we will send you to collections. If your insurance company pays us we will credit your account for future bills for services you may have done at Holzer".

My relative got this same song and dance until I informed the rude billing person that what they were doing is not legal and could result in termination of insurance contracts. Quite amazing after a few seconds a supervisor was on the phone and the insurance company was billed correctly.

If that had been a normal elderly person they would have simply paid the bill and never questioned it. That means the hospital would not he billing Medicare and thus commuting Medicare fraud.

Holzer also double bills by billing for services through the clinic and the hospital. Ever have a procedure that requires conscious sedation such as a colonoscopy? You will get multiple bills from the clinic and the hospital for it. Even if your service is done as a strictly outpatient Holzer clinic service you will get billed twice for it. It's legal the way the law is written. Legal yes, fair hell no!

Don't get me wrong I like a lot of the docs at Holzer. I used to see some of them when I needed a doctor and wouldn't go to the docs at the hospital I worked at (a large competing one in the region). The billing practices though are very shady and need to change.

Some advice to all patients at Holzer who aren't on Medicaid.

Never pay a bill until you get an EOB (explanation of benefits) from your insurance company. This will show that Holzer has indeed billed your insurance company for the services provided to you. These can be very difficult to read even by those of us who work in the medical field or in billing but they can help you. The EOB will show the following.

The procedure performed, the cost the hospital usually bills for the procedure, the amount you insurance was billed for (many insurance companies have contracts with Holzer for reduced payment for services so you usually see a lower than usual and customary charge for th services you received), it was also show what your insurance paid out and any co pays you paid and also what you owe Holzer.

Now let's talk about balanced billing. This is an illegal practice. Let's say I do a procedure that I usually charge $100 for and I have a contract with your insurance company Anthem to provide that service to all anthem patients for $80. I as a provider cannot charge you the $20 to make up the difference or balance bill you for the lost $20. I have to eat that cost.

Look it up it's a true law.

When in doubt ask for a line item bill. These ill breakdown every charge from the hospital to your insurance company rather than lumping them into a group of charges. I've been billed many times by Holzer and Adena and pike for services I was never even given and I would have had to pay those. Hope this helps you all!
