As you may know, the storm on Sunday 6-14-09, caused major flooding in the neighborhood of Northwood Estates. I own a home on Black Ankle drive and we have had repeated issues with the drainage in the pond. The city has repeatedly been notified of our issues and it was never addressed. This time the flooding reached our homes, one home had 4' of water inside, all of their possessions were ruined, and that is just one example among many. Unfortunately none of us have flood insurance on our homes, because we are not in a flood area. In my home there was at least 18 inches of water, and in some areas up to 3 feet. My husband was transferred with the United States Navy to Knoxville and we were lucky in that we had no possession in our home. We do however; have to replace all of our flooring, drywall, insulation, cabinets, and trim. We are devastated with this financially and emotionally. I have included photos of the 6-09 flood, my house is the Red Brick one. Many homes were damaged by the flood, and all of this could have been avoided if our concerns would have been addressed. Thank you in advanced for any help you can provide us, with this issue.
I will also include pictures taken last year of the pond over flowing into our street and yards to show that it was an on going issue.

EmilyA, I feel really bad for you and your neighbors. We had flooding in Oakland Woods off Hwy 64, but it looks like you got the worst of it. Good luck with Oakland City leaders, they never did anything for the 100's of people who sufford pinhole water leaks in there home that was not covered by insurance. They came out just before the Nov. city election in the paper and stated they found out was had really caused it, but then the election was over and no more ever heard about our water leaks, but it got city leader througn the election. I hope you have better luck with them then we did. Sounds like the storm drain systems were not built up to what they should have been and maybe not maintained properly, such as cleaning out the brush and ect. What ever, I'm sorry for your misfortune and wish you the best. We will pray for you and your neighbors....

I am sorry for your problem, but why blame everything on the city? What about the developers who put in the pond? I Live on 94 and as far as I know thats not even in the city limits. I do fell sorry for everyone who has had pinhole leaks as I myself have suffered with them. But I feel like it was the builders who used copper pipes not the city. Again I am sorry for what you are going through, been there, done that, got the T-shirt.

Well we (the neighbors and I) have been told that it was being fixed by the city, numerous times. I do blame the developer, but in the end the city signs off on the plat. (that is my understanding). Honestly I just want something done.. my neighbors lost everything they owned that was in their garage or on the first floor.. it is just so sad.

We all feel sorry for your and your problems, however stop trying to blame everyone, DEAL WITH IT! Besides From what I have been told LAKE FRONT properties hold their value more than inland lots, so look on the bright side of it all. People always want to shift the responsibility to someone, and in this case, it is noone's fault.

NITRAM & SETAICOSSA = spelled backwards, I am curious what did The Former canidate offer you?
Hey, wait this envolved water, maybe it is a job for the seal team from MEBANE.

Hope everyone survived it ok.

I hope nothing like this ever happens to your family or anyone you know and love. This was a devistating loss for many people who worked all their lives to get a nice home and in a few moments lost everything. For you to quote say "Deal With It" shows your ignorace and what type of person you are. Karma is a B*** and I hope you never have to go through something like this. Before you open your mouth you need to know all the facts. By the way its doesnt matter if you have lake front property or not when sewar water ruins your home its not worth anything so being on the lake doesnt help in any way form or fashion.

Isn't this the typical response from Mayor Mullins and his supporters. DEAL WITH IT???? What the heck does that mean? Will city hall ever stand up and take responsibility for anything? Good grief, some of my neighbors lost everything and all you have to respond with is DEAL WITH IT????

At some point "you" have to stop blaming the candidates who lost the last election for all of the problems in Oakland and start doing the job that "you" ran for and were elected to do. The politics in Oakland are going to ruin that town. It has such potential. Sad to see the crap that goes on there. Maybe Oakland politicians should try honesty, put the people who live in the town first(AND YES NORTHWOOD ESTATES IN IN THE CITY LIMITS-THERE IS A NICE CITY LIMIT SIGN INDICATING THIS ON 194 NORTH OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD), and do the right thing.

I think that whole area should have either been rated at a higher flood plain area or controlled with better drainage. Does a creek not drain into that area based on the the FEMA flood plain map?
