MVA's service to Latinos faulted

There are 192 comments on the Baltimore Sun story from Jun 27, 2007, titled MVA's service to Latinos faulted. In it, Baltimore Sun reports that:

“Everybody's trying to do the right thing, so they can drive legally and get insurance”

Advocates for immigrants are urging the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration to improve its services to foreign nationals, saying long wait times and confusing requirements have created a climate in which immigrant drivers are being exploited.

Immigrants and their advocates complain that MVA's phone lines are constantly busy, with applicants waiting as long as six months to schedule an appointment. As a result, a side business has emerged: opportunists offering to make appointments for immigrants for as much as $100, say advocates. Read more

Dear accountant,
I had to help them because they were asked proof of status in order to not make an appoinment, so I had to go into the web site to see what qualifies as proof of status so I could provide them with some of the paperwork that I had filed. I'm glad you think that way, I am a legal resident here in the USA and I think the hispanic immigrants are not all the horrible stuff other "malamutes" say about us in general, there are horrible people in every culture and ethnicity and it is a shame that some ruin it for everybody. I don't judge every white person as if they belong to kkk or the aryan society, or make fun of farm people and that is why it makes me so upset to read so much hate in this forums. We are all human.

Employers don't care if illegals can safely drive to work because they won't employ anyone that is illegally in our country. For some ocean front property here in the Dakotas myspace me or Barnes & Nobel.com and search Carl Aabye

You mean that MS-13 is a civic organization like the Elks Club? You mean that the Latino prisoners in the prisons in Texas, Arizona and California are all innocent? You guys better wise up. OF COURSE THAT IS NOT OK, I TOO THINK THOSE PEOPLE SHOULD BE DEPORTED AND/OR IN JAIL! but do you believe everybody that migrates here belongs to those groups? Like I said before some ruin it for everybody and that is unfair.

All those that immigrate here illegally have one thing in common: They are criminals. So, in that regard, yes, they should all be deported. Legal immigrants are fine.

Obviously you didn't bother to read the article or are just lying, trying to misinform:
This is what the article actually says -- and yes -- it's all about illegals getting fraudulent documents and using them for drivers licenses in Maryland:
'Maryland is one of the worst states in the country and is popularly known through the grapevine for this,' said McDonough, one of the House of Delegates' most vocal opponents to illegal immigration.'It has put a huge burden on the MVA.'
The agency is also under pressure from federal legislation known as the Real ID Act, which requires states to reform licensing rules by May 2008. A key provision of the regulations, which are still in draft form, would make all states require residents to be 'legally present' to receive driver's licenses.
Some lawmakers in Annapolis have objected to the change, and elsewhere some states have refused to comply. Last year, Utah began making 'driving privilege cards' available to illegal immigrants, used solely for driving.
Before the card, Utah also experienced fraud, said Preston Raban, a spokesman for the state's department of public safety, which issues licenses.
'It happened so often, it turned into a complete mess,' he said.'But now, you don't have to worry about people trying to go through the back door and going around things. They are able to drive and are able to be insured.'
Maryland's response to the spike in fraud cases came last summer when the MVA moved to restrict the documents accepted for applications - doing away with foreign baptismal and school records, for example, because they are difficult to authenticate.
Nevertheless, Kuo acknowledged, con artists abound, selling fraudulent documents to immigrants as well as charging them for appointments that should be free.
Jessica Contreras, chairwoman of the board of the Latino Provider's Network, a group of social service providers to Baltimore's Hispanic community, helped talk a client out of paying for such a service.
Blanca, of Baltimore, who agreed only to give her first name for fear of being deported, said she called the MVA every day for three months, until she decided in May to show up at the Glen Bernie office to make an appointment.
Blanca said an MVA agent would not schedule an appointment but instead told her that many immigrants have paid a nearby merchant $100 to call the appointment line for them.
'I know other people who have paid for this, but I think it's unfair,' said Blanca, a mother of four who left El Salvador seven years ago.'You shouldn't have to pay for anything like that. Not for an appointment.'

Is Maryland completely nuts!? Less than 7 years since 9/11, yet they seem to have forgotten the experience of their neighbor state, Virginia. Virginia also had "work-arounds" to allow anyone to get a driver's license for a little extra time and money. That is where most of the 9/11 hijackers got theirs'-- the very ID that allowed them to stroll onto those planes that awful day. Now this country has millions of illegal aliens and yet we seem intent on making them nice & comfy, with full ability to use our de facto, nationally-accepted ID to do anything, go anywhere. Only took a dozen bad guys to wreak havoc in this country. Is it that far-fetched that just maybe a few of those 12+ million *need* closer scrutiny before being granted free rein to go anywhere?? Sheesh!

If I hear one more person seriously advance the notion that the illegal aliens are being exploited, I'm going to YAK. They came here illegally, they got jobs and if they thought they were being exploited, they can certainly leave and go home where they will not be exploited (yeah, right). When will these BED WETTING LIBERALS stop with their contextual myopia. To an illegal alien coming from Mexico or any other geographical armpit, this place is an upgrade in their quality of life - otherwise they wouldn't be here in droves.

Well the article is about why "MVA's Service to Latinos faulted" -- mind you -- not legal Polish immigrants, not H1-B visa engineers from India -- but the service to "latinos". And it did mention the "work-arounds" to get illegals drivers licenses.

Most legal immigrants at least those sponsored by business employers are intelligent enough to get through this process themselves -- and they've bothered to learn a bit of English -- often a lot of English and don't need the patronizing do-gooders holding their hands as though they were young children.

I thought the forum subjects were generally about the article above them. The article did get into the fraud associated with these drivers licenses.

Some of you people need a good smack in the head with something hard.

Rosa Parks didn't give up her seat to a white man. At the time that was illegal, however, WE brought black people here (against their will, I might add) and Rosa Parks was a LEGAL CITIZEN of the country. She *should* have rights.

There are ways to come to this country legally, and those who don't do it the right way have broken the law. It is not a law that discriminates against citizens -- allowing some to do something and others not to -- it is a law against illegal aliens (people who should not be in this country to begin with). In fact, what you're suggesting is that illegal aliens should be allowed to break the law (and, in fact, should be rewarded for their crime(s)), while citizens who commit crimes get punishment. What is so special about illegal aliens that they are better than citizens and thus should be allowed to break laws and be rewarded for it?

Think again. We don't reward crime.
