Business owner shoots attacker
by Mary Jo Denton Herald Citizen
4 hrs 53 mins ago | 1617 views | 0 | 8 || COOKEVILLE -- A young man was shot and injured early this morning by a business owner who told police the man and two others attacked him.

It happened around 3:30 a.m. at The Cue Restaurant and Bar on N. Willow Avenue, Cookeville Police Chief Bob Terry said.

The owner of the business, 79-year-old Thurman Benton Gaw, fired one shot as three young men attacked him, witnesses told Detective Sgt. Tammy Goolsby.

The bullet struck one of the three and all three then fled the scene, the injured man leaving in a Nissan Sentra car and the other two on foot.

The injured man, whose identity was not released by police this morning, was stopped in that car a short time later at the intersection of Jackson and Willow.

He was taken to Cookeville Regional Medical Center and then airlifted to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga.

Gaw told police that three young men showed up at the door of his business after closing time and he opened the door to see what they wanted.

Allegedly, they asked to see a certain person, but that person was not present in the restaurant and in fact, was not someone Gaw knew, according to what he told police.

As he was checking with his employees to see if they knew the person being asked for, the three young men attacked him, taking him to the ground, he later told detectives.

Gaw, who was wearing a handgun in a holster and who has a gun carrying permit, then pulled out his gun and fired the shot which struck one man in the abdomen, detectives said.

Two of Gaw's employees were working at the time, and someone immediately called police. Officers were dispatched to the scene and also began looking for the car in which the injured man had driven away.

Two officers caught up with that vehicle at Jackson and Willow and pulled it over. They found the driver alone in the car and called an ambulance for him, detectives said.

"We are still looking for the other two men, and we are trying to pin down the identity of the injured person," said Detective Lt. Carl Sells.

As of 8:30 a.m. today, the detectives were unable to say for certain who the injured man is and they were also still trying to determine a motive in the case.

"We know that Mr. Gaw was assaulted, that he felt extremely threatened by these people, and that he fired one shot from a handgun," Detective Lt. Sells said. "But we don't know what the motive for the assault was."

The car the injured man was driving was registered to a resident of Jackson County, but the detectives were uncertain this morning that the injured man was the owner, Sells said.

"So we are trying to find out exactly who this man is and we are looking for the other two," he said.

All three were described as in their late teens or early 20's, he said.

Detective Sgt. Tim Terry is also investigating.

they went to the Que becuase chance was looking for a guy that was bad mouthing him and asked the owner if he saw him and the owner said something to chance that he didnt like and he grabbed the guy and threw him to the ground. thats when the guy pulled out a gun and shot chance in the stomach. the other two boys were standing 8 ft away from the whole thing and ran when the gun went off. the paper shows the owners version of what happened and why he shot an 18 yr old boy. 3 ppl didnt attack him and im sure the video camera tape will show that. so get your facts straight before saying something you know nothing about branchboyz

ok ok it wasn't a shot gun. pistol. whatever. just what i heard... maybe he didn't try and rob the place. maybe he was going to find a guy that was talking shit.. shouldnt have been doin that either... a place of business through a 79 year old man isnt the way to take care of that kind of problem

I find it so obscure that people pass judgement on others on this site. No matter what happened we should pray for Chance and realize that life is precious.

i agree with brown eyed girl. Whatever actually happened is beside the point. All he needs now is prayer and recovery. His life is important. The rest can be figured out later.
