In the last month, Morrow County has experienced 3 armed robberies, 1 attempted arm robbery, now a copper thief. All of these crimes occured when law enforcement is unavailable, and I mean 1 officer is not considered protection. The State Highway Patrol answer disturbance calls. Until our law enforcement is beefed up, crime will be a constant problem in our county.
The problem with that scenario is that our county does not have the funds to beef up security. We have had to cut a LOT of services because of dwindling funds. No one in the county can pay higher tax rates and new mills. We are all barely breaking even. Unlike these thieves, we work our a@@es off for what we have and would like to keep it. There have been multiple break-ins to vehicles in the area. We can only do so much with the manpower we have left.

And how much money are you going to put up for these idiots to stop stealing? Not such a good idea when you have to fork over your own money now is it?

I still don't understand how recycling centers will accept copper items they have a strong suspicion of being stolen. How many times does someone have to come in to one a center with rolls of copper grounding wire and church air conditioning units before the owners figure it out?

Yea, thats i! I should just work harder so someone who is either dishonest or lazy or both can have my hard earned money. To heck with that. No one forces anyone to steal, and there are many very honest hard working needy people who way more deserve my voluntary charity.

Morrow County, I suppose you are just too blind to see it. You cannot afford not to pass the law enforcement levies. Unless you end the self deprecating spiral, it will be a sustained ride to bankruptcy and the bottom of the barrel. The less attractive you make it for people to live and work there, the less tax revenue you get, and it just gets worse and drags the conscientious current residents down with it.

This mistrust of government, although healthy to some extent has been taken to extreme in this county. You cannot be there to shoot thieves and trespassers all the time. Wake up... basic services cost money.

Unreal!
The headline reads 'outages' and 'thefts' plural, but the article says one outage due to one theft. Are there more problems the article is not disclosing, or is it just another botched headline?

I don't think you understand how county governments work. There are no such levies that you speak of that we vote on as a community. Our funding comes from the state sales and real estate tax that we as citizens have no control over. The state dictates what funds we get and where they can be allocated. Currently Morrow County is one of the fastest growing counties of the state and we receive less than half of the funding that most counties receive and based on household size and population there is only one county in the entire state that receives less funding than Morrow County. We had a 13% decrease in funds from last year and an additional 8.5% decrease the previous year. Please do some research. I would be willing to pay any amount for the safety and protection of my community, as would the general population of the county. We are a tight knit, hardworking community that provide for our families and don't rely on government assistance to live. You're preaching to the choir buddy :)

Baloney... year after year there are sheriff levies on the ballot that fail year after year. Morrow county is not as tight knit as you think it is any more. People don't have the respect for the law they used to have any more, and previously that respect had carried counties like ours a long way with meager resources. It just wont work any more. Look at the recent drug bust and shooting.
This isn't Mayberry anymore.

Please take the time to research the "sheriff levies" http://www.morrowcounty.info/www/index.php...

As previously stated, we do not vote on the funds of the police department. We vote on fire protection, hospital funding, and emergency services. As far as the community goes, there are always bad apples (mainly people that have come from outside the county), this shouldn't misrepresent the greatness that a majority of the community exemplifies.

If I tried to steal copper wire out of a substation, I would no doubt be electrocuted. Guess the copper swipers have better luck than most (or they know what they are doing).

It is very selfish of these fools to put so many people in jeopardy on one of the most frigid days this year. Maybe their heater will qo out in mid January...seems only fair, right?

Selfish idiots. Karma is gonna get you. They will tell the wrong people one day, bragging about their crime, and they will get themselves busted :)

This guy is on the mark about AEP and the copper theft problem. All AEP does is whine, rather then actually attack the issue at hand:

it is low income teens and young adults out of marion county who are doing this. they know we don;t have law enforcement to catch them. their relatives are in the recycle industries, and they are targeting morrow county. yes they do drugs, but more than that they are lazy and don't want to work for a living. the theives are not morrow countians in need. they are laziass young people who want a free ride. they will steal from their own families, they are scumbags. muchors and theives
