Unreal!

The headline reads 'outages' and 'thefts' plural, but the article says one outage due to one theft. Are there more problems the article is not disclosing, or is it just another botched headline?

I still don't understand how recycling centers will accept copper items they have a strong suspicion of being stolen. How many times does someone have to come in to one a center with rolls of copper grounding wire and church air conditioning units before the owners figure it out?

Recycling centers do ask for IDs when materials are brought in. If the person(s) are stupid enough to cut a fence at a substation & steal copper, just wait it will sooner or later show up at a recycle facility, then the individual(s) can be arrested. I agree with zeke it was probably related to drugs in some way. Theives generally do not have to steal to provide food and clothing for their families. Electric Co. should electrify their fences and not bother to use warning signs to discourage or alert tresspasses. Law abiding people seldom if ever are around those types of equipment stations.

Really? Considering the county is running on one deputy on duty per shift, our government offices had to close on Thursdays due to budget cuts, and all pay raises have been frozen for over a year; I'm pretty sure that is not the case. I woke up to a house that was 58 degrees this morning because these lazy pieces of trash can't get a job and provide for themselves and have to take advantage of hard working people of the community, not only that, they broke into several personal vehicles this morning. Less fortunate? No. Pathetic excuse for human beings? Absolutely.

No, the less fortunate, need to do more with less. Work 2 partime jobs if need be. Why should the person who has more ( worked harder) have to help, unless they want to. The government does not need to dictate what we do with our money.

Crackheads...we just had our copper wiring stolen out of the home we were about to move into...it's unfortunate that these idiots are threatening their own lives for something like $25. And as far as the recycling companies that buy the copper from these theives..well, they should be held responsible too for their idiocy..C'mon, the same ppl. are coming back with copper every other day for money, and you are only supporting their theivery...this type of exchange should be monitored..

Copper thieves should be shot on sight. Losing power during winter could be life threatening to many people, especially the sick and elderly.

My grandma who needs oxygen to survive was without power in this outage! It completely enrages me! She has portable tanks that she was able to use and a gas heater to stay warm.

The consequences of this type of crime can go well beyond the theft of the wire itself. People that lose their power could die either from the cold or the lack of necessary medical devices.

With Morrow Co's lack of adequate law enforcement I doubt that the perpetrator will be caught. Electrified fencing would help. Copper prices coming down would help and the unemployment rate coming down would help with this type of crime.

I agree that people need to do more with less. And I don't agree that this had to be about drugs. Since I live in this county I understand the dynamics of it. I also understand hardship and have had to do with less but have never resorted to stealing to accomplish anything. What this person or people did was very wrong and there are plenty of sources of help out there especially at this time of year.

But please don't jeopardize others to make a buck!

We conservatives call this "spontaneous socialism"

Morrow Cnt Citizen
I live in Morrow Cnty as well, but you can be almost 100% certain this crime had to do with drugs in some way, shape, or form. I have had two catalytic converters (containing platinum) stolen from vehicles sitting in my driveway this past summer (I was on vacation).
I agree the economy being better would help, but drugs are at the heart of these type of problems. Quick, easy, and hard to catch in the act (this sub-station is in remote area). The thieves gave no thought as to who this would affect, much less who it may possibly hurt.
Morrow Cnty is now a bedroom community to Cols. and hence we will continue to see a rise in this type of crime there.
Certainly hiring more Sheriff Deputys would be a step in the right direction. Possibly building an electrified fence inside a fence that had signs stating stay out/private property etc. could be beneficial as well.
Whatever steps are taken, they need to be done quickly before someones health is affected by this stupid callous type of crime
