There was a black bear killed in Ada last year....fascinating yes, newsqorthy, not really.....look at all of the blueberry farms in the area...I was told they would come down that side of the State several years ago.

There was a mama and two cubs around Bush Dr. and 10 Mile in Rockford a couple of years ago. They could still be there.

according to the other tv station in town, they saw the bear and tranquilized it. They never said what they did with it after that.

I have some questions for channel 8 news. Did anyone report the reason for there being more sightings of bear in the lower peninsula? Are there any scientific theories as to why this may be? Might we expect this trend to continue? Might it have something to do with their populations, the climate, food sources, or loss of habitat?

Basically, it is bordered on the west by US-31, the north by Sherman Street, the south by the Muskegon-Ottawa county line, and the east by Maple Island Road.(and before people correct me with a bunch of other road names, this is just a more specific GENERALIZATION than saying Muskegon County or between Muskegon and Grand Haven, which are both correct.)

Frankly I would rather hear of news like this than all of the violence and sadness going on all the time.
BTW, not that its nearly as cool, but we have a stupid coyote that keeps coming around our back yard.

Do NOT feed the bear.
Secure all garbage.
Do not leave garbage in your car.
Do Not leave your children unattended, bears are very fast and always hungry.
and
Yes letting your little Fifi out to take a leak after dark and she doesn't return IS considered feeding the bear.

Very true, Ma. This is just nature working itself out to be honest. With the coyote, seriously, get the hibs to buy a fur bearers tag, and shoot the SOB.....plenty more ruthless than any bear in my mind. I DO hunt coyotes for that reason alone. table scraps will do as bait.

*sigh*, perhaps you can do your own research and find out that black bears are native to the lower peninsula. They have never *not* been around here, there just aren't as many of them spotted because they usually don't live in subdivisions. They tend to like forests.

So if by "trend" you mean "all of history", then yeah, you can expect it to continue.

Just out of curiosity, how did you think the black bears got to the LP from the UP (since that is what your post implied)? Swim across the straits of Mackinac? Get in a car and drive across the bridge? Ferry boat? Walk all the way around through Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana...then to Fruitport?

Most likely, it just wandered in from the nearest forest. There was really no phenomenon at work here....just a bear looking for some grub.

I believe the one that was shot and killed was in Battle Creek (?).

I have a friend that has a black bear as a "pet". He has had him for 9 years. His name is Boo Boo, and no he is not Yogi's friend. LOL Not really the kind of pet that I would want. He has to have a permit to keep him, found him in the woods as a cub. He LOVES pumpkins.

just thought you would enjoy that little tidbit :)
