A former Teen Challenge student exposes this abusive Christian alcohol and drug program. Although seen by many as a worthwhile organization, Teen Challenge has a dark side, one of pathological abuse and an obsession with the almighty dollar.

I was a student at Western Michigan TC for 11 months to the day. I ran the kitchen for 6 and fundraising for 2 of those months.
Please do your homework before going here or sening someone here.
It is as close to a cult as I have ever seen.
If you have questions you can e-mail them to me at tj.1001@hotmail.com.
I will answer them truthfully based on my first hand knowledge and experience.

So let me ask you this TJ: Before you entered TC, where you the perfect, righteous, model citizen? So let me understand, for 8 of the 11 months you were there, TC caused you harm by submitting you to learning how to serve others instead of serving your master of drugs and alcohol and reaking havoc and pain on your family and friends?
Sounds like TC really messed up your life!
They have their faults, no one is perfect. At least they are trying to do something about losers like you. Suck it up and be GRATEFUL that the good Lord used TC to help you find your way to AA and a sober life.
You know why so many people fail when they leave these programs? Because there is no one out there in the real world to continue to hold them accountable. The biggest downfall with TC is that there is no therapy for the loved ones who don't have a clue that your in no way cured of the desease, just the symptoms. These loved ones also have no clue that the hurt they carry doesn't go away with the inflated expectations that the abuser is going to be perfect.
Maybe that's your problem TJ. You didn't walk out of TC a perfect person and you need to blame someone for that? You might want to consider getting set up with a good therapist. I think your time would be better well spent trying to figure out what is wrong with you instead of what is wrong with TC!

Nice try Mikie. I went to the Action 9 website and read the article. I then proceeded to e-mail the station and ask them if they bothered to 'investigate' Mr. Keirnan and Mr. Knight to see if the victims of the horrendous crimes they committed and were convicted of would give them a recommendation of being honest and truthful of what they are saying. It makes me sick to think that poor Mr. Kiernan was forced to work a 40 hour week and only make 33 cents when he could of been in prison for 15 years, surrendering parts of his body to buy a cigarette!
Who's committing the worst crimes against society here? I am glad to send money to any T.C. if it means the idiots who end up in T.C.will be held accountable for their actions.
Move on Mikie and do something good with your life instead of trying to destroy others.

So, you emailed the station? Am I supposed to be impressed? Did they respond? Hell, no, and you're a liar if you say that they did.

You're unhappy because the truth about Teen Challenge is coming out step by step. They are the ones who are finally being held accountable for their actions.

Being the good Christian that you are, shouldn't you be praying for Mr. Kiernan? Or are you only a Christian when it benefits you? Sounds just like a Teen Challenge grad.

Your really smart there Mikie. However, I am not a T.C. grad for your information. I would give you my name so you can verify it, but I really don't trust you with that information.
How nice of you to call me a'good Christian'. What is that anyway? Tell me your definition of a good christian please!
As far as praying for Mr. Kiernan, I pray more often than you will ever know for those who know not what they do(like alcoholics, drug addicts, sexual predators, etc.) and for the victims of those they have hurt!
Yes Mikie, I am a victim of abuse. Most recently by a crack addict who came out of T.C. and stayed clean for almost 3 years. Because she refused to help herself and get follow-up care, she got an attitude like so many of the addicts I have been acquainted to, that the world owed them and because she didn't get what she wanted, she started using again. Not wanting to go into T.C. or any other help organization because of the 'horrible way' all these places treated her, I made the mistake of taking her in. Yeah, she stayed clean for a whole 3 weeks and she said I was her Savior, until I told her that she needed to get a job and start taking RESPONSIBILITY for her life and the next thing I know, she robs me and heads out to Chicago, hooks up with drug dealer and forced her family to call the law because she was threatening them with a gun!
So I guess your right when you say once an addict, always an addict. So tell me, what do you expect society to do with the likes of you then?
Give you a second chance? I don't have it in me to keep helping people like you and I sure in the heck cannot afford being ripped off again. If I'm going to lose money, I would much rather give it to to Places like T.C. who are willing to go that extra step to help someone like you and give them a second chance.
So what if I was a T.C. grad? Am I less of a person in your book because of it? Oh I'm sorry, your a jounalism major so that puts you way up there as far as having any class or a good heart is concerned.
Get real Mikie and stop blaming people for your sorry state of affairs. Grow up and get a life!

To Michael and K: You know TC is not just a program. It is a "Spiritual Boot Camp for "REAL SOLDIERS" in he army of the Lord. TC is, I like to call a training for reighning ground. I am so very sorry that you did not rely on the Word that has been taught to you. I am so sorry, that you worked the program and did not allow the program to "WORK FOR YOU" I am very sorry, you didn't appreciate the opportunity to spend quality time with the Lord.....without the cares of the world. To be honest you could not handle the Sanctification process. It is disappointing to know that you spent 11 months and couldn't allow the Gods Holy Spirit to help you apply all of that word that you recieved. I am a former graduate. I graduated 7 years ago and I Thank God for that Ministry. Don't you know that all things work together for the good for those who LOVE GOD and are called according to his purpose. Do you remember reading about the Israelites who spent 40 years in the wilderness? going in circles You know why? Because they DID NOT KNOW HOW TO PROCESS THE TRANSITION. Do you remember how when the people grumbled and complained against Moses in the wilderness? God caused and earth quake to swallow them up in the presence of the people. Keep YOUR MOUTH OFF OF TC. THAT IS GOD'S ANOINTED MINISTRY.... GOD'S NOT MAN! and I pray that maybe one day you will understand. May God heal all of your hurts, feelings and emotions in Jesus Name;-)

Wow, all I offered was to share my experience. Your response is typical of the mis-informed public of West MI TC. Instead of talking to me about my situation you attacked me. Nice christian attitude. This was very typical at TC. When I would ask about things I was confused about they turned it on me. Pastor Sam called me one of the "frozen chosen" because I was not raised in the Assemblies of God. He said "I didn't get it because I didn't speak in tongues".
Again if anyone has questions they can e-mail me and I will answer their questions truthfully based on my experience. tj.1001@hotmail.com

No one "speaks in tongues." It is nothing but subconscious mimicking.

I have no first hand knowlege of addiction, and never attended TC. However,I HAVE known graduates of the program. Several have gone on to be very productive members of society, and ALL have a new sense of caring for others rather than just themselves. Drug and alcohol addiction is about being very selfish, to the extent of sacrificing the well being of their own children to be able to get high. Everyone I have talked to that has gone through the program is much more able to see that and take responsibility for their families. I say if it helps even ONE child to regain a parent, I support it! Who cares if it is tough? For heavens sake, having a trusted parent take food out of their mouths to spend it on drugs has got to be tougher for the child! So what they learn to work? They have a warm place to stay, food to eat, and lots of a lot of the people in the program choose it as an alternative to prison. Not sure how much they are paying in prision these days for labor, but I don't see many people beating down the doors to get in there for the employment opportunities! When you get to a place where your life is so out of control you need to make choices of living or dying, prison or TC, well, I guess you need to face the fact that YOU have messed up and it is not going to be easy no matter what avenue you choose....personal responsibility is in the realm of ADULTHOOD. Some people are just never able to get there. Sad. So much easier to blame others for your problem, but so much more adult to face the fact that YOU are the problem!

Sounds like a typical white lie to me; a modicum of truth mixed with...well lies! I know Pastor Sam. He is very sensitive to the Holy Spirit. I won't say anymore unless I hear both sides of the conversation. But I can say this. Almost all who leave Teen Challenge early, or are kicked out, end up being disgruntled selfish whiners. How you handle it will determine whether you gain or lose ground in your relationship with Jesus Christ.
One leaves Teen Challenge because he wants to. One gets kicked out of Teen Challenge because of rebelliousness and pride. They cannot bring themselves to be humble and take instruction; so instead they lash out, kind of like you are: So that you can draw in fellow sympathizers and make yourself feel better. It is all just avoidance of dealing with the problem at hand, the sin problem. Each situation is different of course.

hmm, I got kicked out of muskegon teen challenge after being inducted in Flint teen challenge. being bipolar but not yet diagnosed was a big problem. Why does pastor Sam always flash the sign of pan while he is preaching too? lol. When I went back to Flint after being kicked out of Muskegon about 5 of the staff smoked crack and the success rate of graduates staying off drugs was 15% not 80% like what is preached. A number of the staff were also gay. Not too mention one of the staff, Freddie Johnson, stabbed me twice in the stomach with a file. If people really connected with God, Teen Challenge, and the world, would be a better place. It seems that all christian organizations get touched with the curse of the pharisees after existing for a while. God usually instills something on earth and after a time it is bogged down by the flesh. Thank God for revival. I don't want to judge anyone for all the weird things that happened in teen challenge to me (much more than I have mentioned.) I am trying to cut my teeth as a writer and I have plenty of stuff to write about from my interesting experiences. My family feels really bad about getting a court order to send me to Flint and Muskegon TC though.

Hey all of you christian people are perfect anyways, right? You just go to church on Sunday and your god will forgive you and all is well. If either of my children ever got in trouble I would send them to boot camp before sending them to a brain washing place like teen challenge. And isn't there that thing about do onto others as you would have done onto you, and that we should not judge others. But hey I geuss I am not as good of a bible thumper as others.

TC is a joke. The staff and all but one of the pastors ( pastor?....please! LOL!) have simply found some place to hide because they are afraid of the real world and have not found another way to stop putting drugs in their bodies. They have both left TC to try to start a real life and started using again, so they ran right back. The 80% stat is a lie. I was there, I know. The entire ministry is built on lies, driven by fear, and preys on the hopeless and weak minded. Do not go to TC, unless you are homeless and need a place to stay for awhile. If you have a brain in your head, this is not the choice for you, just go to AA, or rehab or whatever-trust me! WMTC is as close to a cult as you are likely to find, at times it can be truly scary. I large group of hopeless individuals are pretty apt to swallow just about anything, exspecially when it shoved down their throats. This type of herding develops into mob mentality, and thats when it gets really scary. STAY AWAY!!
