Professional educational article on no zero theory.
http://www.ascd.org/publications/educational-...

I missed this article in the NT. This Reporter does a much better job looking into the how and why of this possible change in policy, than the articles in the Daily Times.

I would appreciate it if whammer jammer, or Christopher Manning could could chime in on the data that CCSD is improving, as evidenced by the graduation rate. The difference? Levinski.

I am reading the article about the no zero theory right now, it doesn't look bad, but I think the CCSD teachers union presented it in a way to reflect poorly on the district.

Some of the interesting points from the article

"Defenders of the zero claim that students need to have consequences for flouting the teacher's authority and failing to turn in work on time," he added. "They're right, but the appropriate consequence is not a zero; it's completing the work - before, during, or after school, during study periods, at 'quiet tables' at lunch, or in other settings."

"For 2012, Kirtland Central improved its graduation rate by 13.4 points over its 2011 graduate rate to an 80 percent graduation rate, and, as a result, had the highest graduate rate in the county last year."

"For 2012, Kirtland Central improved its graduation rate by 13.4 points over its 2011 graduate rate to an 80 percent graduation rate, and, as a result, had the highest graduate rate in the county last year."

It is nice to see that some educators can think "outside" the box instead of always trying to figure out how to one up someone. They policy of forcing teachers to TEACH is great and all school districts should follow instead of ridicule. Farmington Schools SEE AN EXAMPLE!!!!

I would agree. It looks like the New CCSD is doing a much better job of keeping all accountable: the administrators, teachers, and students.

I think CCSD could have done a better job of presenting what the no zero therory actually was. Or maybe Jenny Kane from the daily times wanted to slant the story. The Navajo Times story is much clearer on what the shiprock principal was wanting to do.

Whammer Jammer, it looks like our tax dollars are being put to good work, and actually educating children. Instead of giving out handouts to Kirtland.

Corruption is rampant. You obviously have drank the 'koolaide'. Enjoy. No zero?? Did this happen when you or any of your fellow students experienced your 'tough' graduation prerequisities? Why? Because you had to meet the same standards as every other student in the state, the country. Why are there exceptions with reservation students? They change their pants the same as other students..they are expected to attend school..EVERY DAY..just as their piers...so they are expected to pass the tests, turn in the assignments, attend to their homework, meet the state standards....what sets the reservation kids apart from every other student in the country? Hmmm....Perhaps it's attendance? Perhaps it's the participation in classroom activities? Are you a teacher in the system? Or, just an opposing voice? Do you have a child in the system or just commenting on the system in general based on the opposing view? Where do you base your opinion on? Your child? Or just making a generic opinion based on race? We need to wake up. Making 'exceptions' for our kids doesn't help them, it puts them in a whole new genre....do you for one minute think the colleges/universities won't take that into consideration in the acceptance policy? No zero...pesha...that will not float unless EVERY other college or university in this country has the same policy. It won't happen. Period. Put our kids back in the running. Don't target them for 'special' district consideration.....it won't fly in the real world. You may force the local college to accept this exception, but, it won't fly nationally. Period. Stay with the national standard.

Dear Whammer Jammer.

My point is maybe that No Zero Policy really was not a no zero, as your friends at the teachers union made it out to be.

Doing a quick internet search on how educators are keeping kids from failing courses and not graduating does show many things along the lines of the Professional Educational journal article that CCSD referenced. The main thing they are doing is they are holding the kids, parents and teacher accountable for doing their work, and being responsible for their education. I really don't see how you can complain about that.

I have kids in CCSD. My opinion on it before Levinski took over is that it was the biggest joke of an education that, one could give. The worst part of all was the Old Boys Club of Kirtland was in charge and doing a POOR job. Actually I don't think they really cared, about education, just about the jobs and money. Tso for whatever he is worth changed that. The state did see corruption in CCSD, the past one and that is why they didn't want to give you back a school district. This being New Mexico it must have been something very obvious.

Your skewed morally bankrupt political, religious, and cultural views really cloud your perception on what is going on. As well as a lack of education on your part.

The funny part is if the schools improve I bet you will see a huge surge in the test scores of the Navajo kids and not as much with the Kirtland Anglo kids. Why? Because all the smart white people were ran off by idiots like you.
