Woman uses Super Glue on teeth

Full story: WOOD-TV Grand Rapids and Michigan

With a decay in markets and the economy, health experts are worried about another kind of decay: people cutting back on dental work because they don't have the money.

I understand I live in Cleveland Ohio and I also am doing the same thing. I have been using super glue off and on for about 5 years. Right now my top front crown in super glued.

Careful NOT to swallow the portion that's glued on! Super Glue is not dental "glue." The constant wetness of your mouth, chewing, and the Ph factor might all impact super glue's stickiness. Also...your enamel is porous. Are you sure there's nothing in the glue that will harm your mouth in the long-term?

I have a core and need the crown put on. It's been a year. My dentist is getting p'd off, but I'll do it when I can afford it.

In the meantime...

I don't chew on that side.

Don't blame this on the economy. The rot on her teeth has not just appeared this year. She has had this problem for some time. I have a number of crowns and a implanted tooth, quite expensive but paid for over time. I beleive she is looking for a handout.

Me too! I also floss like crazy. It still doesn't prevent all problems though. I've spent thousands on my teeth in the last couple of years, and I can't afford any more.

The dollar stores sell toothpaste and brushes. Brush your teeth once in a while and they will stop falling out.

I was on a field trip with my daughter and overheard another parent saying she has used super glue on a broken tooth. So far it's held for 7 years. I don't recommend it.

Why is there not help for this woman? If she were black or spanish, there would be help. If she were an illegal she would get what she needed. Why isn't there any help for HER? Noone should have to use Super Glue in their mouth! That is highly toxic! Does anyone REALIZE what this will do to her?! Does anyone CARE?! I'm now disabled (single mom) and do not have dental insurance, so I'm basically in her same position. I cannot go to the dentist, but if my kids need to go to the dentist, that is my first priority; their needs. I also need dental work, but it looks like that will never happen. No, I wouldn't put glue in my mouth, but if I was in her situation, I guess it might come down to that. This country is pretty pathetic when it will help those that don't belong here, or those that don't actually need it before they will help a tax-paying citizen. The community should come together for crying out loud!

Instead of judging her, just because you see she is WHITE, how do you even KNOW why her teeth are the way they are? She said they take care of their kids first, like ALL parents SHOULD, instead of getting nails and crap done for yourself. You people don't mind feeling *sorry* for the octo(scumbag)mom that is living off the system.*Minorities* always CLAIM they can't afford anything but seem to have money for their teeth, hair, nails, clothes, cars and 8 or more kids and you cater to THAT, but THAT'S ok. Such hypocrits!

I understand that this is actually quite common in England, where everyone theoretically does have dental coverage through their national health care plan. The reason is not a lack of coverage but a lack of dentists. England is apparently suffering from a shortage of dentists due to the very low compensation rates under the national health plan (similar to many Doctors in the US who won't take Medicaid or Medicare because of the low reimbursement rates).

On the practical side... Like other have said here... Brush your teeth!

I don't have all the answers but I do know something has to change. My heart and conscience tells me that it is wrong that so many people in this country don't have access to Dental or Health insurance. But my logical side tells me that putting in the hands of the Federal Government just isn't going to work. When my mother goes to see her doctor the bill is $175.00. Because she had Medicare, the Doctor recieves something like $57.00 compensation and that's all he is allowed to get. He cannot bill my parent's for the balance. Out of that 57 bucks he has to pay his nurses, receptionists, the lease or mortgage on his building, his medical equipment, records keeping etc. etc. I don't know how he can even afford to let my mother walk in the door. If there is no financial incentive for someone to tackle 9 years of college and usually a $100,000.00 or more in student loans to become a doctor, those people are just going to go into other fields where they are compensated more for their work and we will be left with a chronic shortage of doctors (and/or Dentists, the same principles apply).

Your mom's doctor might get only $57.00 from her but how about the other 3 people at least per hour that are being charged $175.00 a visit?? If the doctor was not making money he/she would be in bailout mode for Obama!! LOL

The other 3 people probably have Medicare too. Or other insurance that isn't going to pay the full cost either. It's "Usual and Customary" now, which is basically just what the insurance company decides they are going to pay for the visit or procedure.

Not as crazy as you may think. Super glue was invented during the Vietnam war as a quick skin bonder. It was sprayed on the wound to seal it untill you could catch a copter to the aid station.
