“With aggravated assaults, you're dealing with assaults on people where there are witnesses and often more evidence left behind. This category of major crime is more likely to be reported for these reasons”

Pearland - There's an easy explanation for a 15 percent spike in major crime in Pearland last year, said Police Capt. via The Facts

I am locating my family from the midwest to the Houston area because of my engineering job. I was told to check out Pearland (as it is so close to my location that I will be working) and I did and saw some nice things- decent homes, nice shopping and some not so nice things- horrible traffic congestion and too much loitering by middle aged men in the middle of the work day in parking lots.
It unsettled my wife greatly. We heard alot of loud blaring RAP music and there was trash littered all over the parking lot in front of Target and Khols. In fact we saw a car dump out a dirty diaper into the parking lot like it was nothing.
We felt uncomfortable and uneasy. I have a work colleague that has recently as of I assume 3 years ago moved to the Silver Lake subdivison and at the time thought it was a great fit for them.
They have since really had to reconsider and its a shame. We will have to move elsewhere and I will have to have more of a commute because I refuse to not only never like in Pearland, but I don't even want to accidentally get lost in Houston traffic and drive thru ever again.
I was browsing around online looking for Pearland stories and came across this and it's so interesting to see that I am not alone in my thoughts.
Our realtor mentioned that Cullen Highway and 288 Highway brings down crime in droves with easy get a away from the retail establishments.
Wow, you saw all of these things in one visit to Pearland? Give me one example of one major mall or commercial center that is not built around a major freeway in Houston?

Go to this website and do a side by side comparison before you make illogical comments.

You're an engineer? Where did teach you to draw conclusions based on one anecdotal experience that is laughable?

Wow and we thought we were alone in this thinking. Our home has just gotten broken into (we live in silverlake) and we have had it with the crime here. There is only so much hoodlum living you can take when you work so very hard to live in a nice home. We are listing our home next week and moving to the Katy or Cypress area.
I agree Friendswood is very nice. Parts of Clear Lake are as well. We are going to get out for the schools and quality of life at this point. At our neighborhood crime watch meeting, there was a big discussion on why crime is NOT reported in pearland- because it is a old boys' network and small town owned papers, 40% of the room has had something criminal happen in pearland in the last year and nothing was ever written up. The exception was the 8 month pregnant woman who was held up at gunpoint at target a few months ago- because SHE contacted the newspapers and demanded a story to be written. It is very ugly town, it has a very small town mentality. Petty people who do not have enough to do with their time either.
I grew up in Pearland as well. I find myself pining for the quiet safe little town I grew up in. I do agree that in the last 2 or 3 years the crime has gotten out of control, however I don't think it is fair to call us petty small minded people who don't have enough to do with their time. Some of us are hardworking, caring individuals who care about their neighbors and the town they live in.

Well I've lived here for 8 months and love it. I'm just not seeing all this bad stuff folks are talking about. Everything you need is right here and it's a very diverse city. I even live in one of those supposed "bad" apartments along 518. I guess people see what they want to see.

I lived in Brazoria County 30+ yrs. I grew up in Alvin,Tx. Great for the most part, Great ISD. Crime is below average. But Alvin has alot of child molestors. I then moved to Pearland for like 1.5 yrs back in '99..2000. I will say it..I dont care how you feel about my comments.. but you asked and here it is ..Pearland is Houston's new butthole. Very Nasty..lol made me renew my gun license. As of Friendswood... I lived there for 5yrs. Very clean, kinda exspensive.{rent wise}. Small Town, but close to everything you need. I now live in Manvel...I set out on the porch with my shotgun and drink beer..just waiting...lol jk, but for real..lol

We moved our family to Pearland in 1996. The reason we moved here was because of the school district. That was then! We are currently looking for a private school to send our son to because Pearland High School is OUT OF CONTROL! You want to talk about THUGS!! Our son tells us there are certain halls that if you are white and you want to walk down that hall you better hug the wall". There are no teachers insight.

your kid must not know how to push then. i agree PHS is overcrowded and the blacks tend to stand around and be fuckin retarded the majority of the time but you can walk down every hallway and get through without hugging a wall. teachers? dont get me started they are everywhere and they are so strict its stupid. i think silverlake is the butthole of houston but if you come more towards dixie farm you can still find the middle sized town that stays quiet for the most part. silver lake is over populated by black people and thus you hear all the problems they make. shit in school they complain about each other. its quite funny.

I go to PHS and that is a severely dramatic phrase. The halls are a little hard to navigate because of over-crouding, but there arent any hallways that are so severe you need to hug the wall. And te teachers are everywhere. EVEN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HALLWAY!!! So as long as you walk confidently through no one bothers you.

I really hope Pearland's situation will change. Officials are trying to curb crime, but I think that they may be lacking experience and/or guidance. The surrounding areas are really pulling Pearland down quickly and something must be done prudently so that we don't become another Missouri City or Alief. We heed more patroling by police officers!(And I don't mean at 7 AM after residents have already been robbed!) We need extra patroling in the wee hours of the morning. I would even suggest a semi-curfew being imposed between the hours of 3AM and 6PM. Whereby an officer of the law has the right to pull you over and question you.(Places like Memorial do this sort of thing and have significantly lower crime rates.) I believe that this would reduce the crime rate in that most crime is occuring during the early morning time. Furthermore, patroling is needed beginning in November and thru December as it is a known fact that crime (robbery) spikes during the holiday season.
The next issue is education. We need to put more emphasis on the educational institutions here in the area. We need to monitor where the students are coming from and make sure that outsiders (Missouri City residents and Houston residents) are not in our schools. We've paid alot to be in a good area of Pearland and I don't want lower income individuals who don't place as significant a value on education in my schools socializing with my children. I firmly believe that the people who surround your kids have a great impact on them. And for this reason, I currently have my daughter in private schooling. I would love to send her to public schooling, but the ratings and demographic need improvement and shift before I switch her over!
The last issue is the layout of Pearland. I am a resident of SCR and love the layout of my community. However, I have noticed areas outside my community need changing. One of the things that need addressing is the stoplight at the cross-section of 518 and 288. The lights need to be timed as to allow proper flow of traffic eastward on 518. This would alleviate a lot of the traffic problems. Also Pearland needs and expansion project for 518 east of 288. 4 lanes is obviously not enough and this should have been addresses before the opening of Pearland Town Center. I would suggest a set up similar to highway 6 in Sugar Land.
There are many other changes like asthetics and zoning that should also be imposed to make Pearland beautiful.

It is no where you can go without crime. For the most part, Pearland is a nice city to live. Traffic is a nightmare. Law Enforcement is not doing enough. They need to issue tickets for that loud music. I have a friend that live in Katy and he said just like every city you have good and bad. PISD is great. If everyone knows that crime comes down 288 and Cullen, why law enforcement don't have a high visibilty in those areas.
River Oaks have crime, The Woodlands have crime so you think Pearland,Sugarland,Katy and Clear Lake is better? I don't think so.River Oaks and The Woodlands Have the best that money can buy and houses still get broken into. Let's face it, a new day and time has come about. The small town country atmosphere is gone for the suburbs of Houston.

I guess all I really have to say is that I am disappointed in what I here from u guys. I have lived all over houston and crime is everywhere, however I cant remember a time when I saw grown men hanging out in the parking lots of pearland, maybe you saw teenagers who hang out on the weekends like they do at katy mills.

I have lived in Silverlake since 1999. There are too many people in the area for the infrastructure, but it is no worse than Clear Lake.
And, like it or not, the Katrina refugees that located to the apartments off FM 518 did not help.
We do need more police, and now. I do not fear these scumbags. I will protect my family as well, and have been a CHL holder since the begining of the program. I encourage you to fight back, as other have said.

Well, my husband and I moved to Pearland about two years ago. We love our house in Silver Lake but in the past two weeks alone, I have seen a new news story every day when I log into my computer in the mornings about someone being burgalarized, held up at gun point, or kidnapped! I would love to move inside the loop, knowing full well the crime we would be moving into, but at least we would expect it. I certainly never expected this type of behavior in the suburbs. I am extremely disappointed with the way that things are turning out for us in Pearland. I too agree that Pearland grew way too fast. There are far too many people living in the area and the roadways are absolutely NOT equipped to handle the traffic. I am just so incredibly unhappy with Pearland but I know it will be quite a while before moving will be cost efficient. It is incredibly disheartening to come to this realization.

Ive been living in Pearland for 6 months(relocated from Las Vegas). Let me say that no city especially any surrounding Houston are completely safe. I can also promise you this place is a 100 times better than Las Vegas. I lived in a suburb their as well and let me tell you Pearland is freaking Sesame Street compared to that. I like it so far, my best advise is protect your homes and families first and second we should come together as a community. Talk to your neighbors and watch out for one another. Let me tell you one thing most criminals arent very smart they act on impulse and that is always an advantage to someone who is prepared. Take care
