Not certain what Concerned is talking about, my wife and I love the resort and if I golfed, I would probably be in heaven. Unlike the other casinos down on the river this is the one that does not make you feel slimy or trashy while visiting. The friends of ours who have visited have also loved it.
French lick clearly is appealing to a different demographic group and a different set of tastes than the other casinos in this state. The goal of the riverboat casinos is to get low and fixed income people to drop their checks at their place as opposed to the lottery line at the convenience store.
French lick is a destination and getaway with a casino and three golf courses, two spas and great restaraunts on premises, not a floating ash tray with a bunch of slot machines in board.
Well put! We visit French Lick whenever we can and it never disappoints. The architecture and the history of the place make it a great getaway. It's interesting to see how it's changed over the years. The refurbishing is incredible, with attention to detail and respect for the past. Plus, you can gamble!

It sounds like many of the posters here are typical low end customers, they want something nice for nothing. If you can't afford to pay, then stay home.

French Lick, the Cook Group or whoever, only has one chance to make a first impression. You would think the machines would be loose, the service would be good and the experience would be wonderful. Well, it was none of that.

And, to beat all, the drinks were not free while we were spending our money in the casino...
Addressing the 2 issues above, the state limits the "take" that all casinos are allowed to make - it's something like 10% of what's actually bet. That means the machines pay out 90%- sounds like you chose the wrong machines, the loose/tight slot issue is a myth.

Secondly, again, the state prohibits the casinos from giving free drinks - I had learned this the same way down at Caesars. If the casinos could give free drinks out, they would - drunk gamblers spend more than sober ones....

Just for fun I decided to look up how much it would cost to fly from Indy to Vegas for the weekend of Dec 21-23. I can FLY to Vegas and stay at various locations on The Strip for less than I can book a room at the West Baden for two nights. They are going to lose too many people to things like this. People go to casino's to gamble, and that's how casino's make their money.
Here are my calculations for your date range, even assuming only one person:

Vegas (using the cheapest listings on Expedia):
Air and Hotel for 2 nights -$461/person at the Plaza Hotel on Freemont Street (way off the strip)
Parking at Airport -$25
Vegas Airport to Hotel -$20 per person (shuttle)

TOTAL:$506 + Tax (plus probably $75 in cab fares to the strip, where the action is at)

French Lick (using Frenchlick.com ):
Hotel (2 nights at French Lick Springs Resort)-$348
Gas to and from Indy -$50

TOTAL:$398 + Tax

So, assuming that you're not going to Vegas alone (and the fact that we're using a room at French Lick and not West Baden - since you can't compare West Baden with the Plaza Hotel in Vegas) it would cost a couple $967 to go to Vegas, as opposed to $398 to go to French Lick.

THE CASINO WAS A POLITICAL BLUNDER TO BEGIN WITH.
DITCH MITCH STILL REFUSES TO ACCOUNT FOR THE MILLION OF DOLLARS THE STATE IS SUSPOSED TO RECEIVE FROM PEOPLE GETTING RIPPED OFF.
THE CASINO NEEDS TO BE PUT ON THE GROUND.

Ok, good for Mr. Cook. I spent a year of my life working at the Casino. I want to thank all of you who've said some very nice things about the people who work there. It's a tough environment to work in when you are constantly having to apologize to patrons for things you can't control.
I will reinterate one of my favorite phrases from my days there "They are slot machines, Not ATMs, it's called gambling for a reason".
I'm glad Mr. Cook is ditching Benchmark and going his own way. Benchmark is the reason the Casino has had an excessive high turnover rate. The pay is low... very low. Next time you groan about your drinks not being free, don't complain to your cocktail server who only makes an hourly rate of 2.25 an hour and has to try to make up the rest in tips... which are nearly non existant.
In all honestly, I'd still be there, if I could afford to work there. I liked what I did, but every time the opportunity presented itself for a transfer, I'd apply and never hear anything. After 10 transfers requests into a field that I have a college education for, I finally gave up and quit. Management and HR need to get their acts together.
To those asking about a non smoking area, keep your eye on the poker room area, from what I've been told, that's where the new non smoking area/slots are going to be.

Whip, thanks for the "Poker room non-smoking area" tip. You should know how it is really needed. Sooner the better.

I like Mr. Cook and I thank him for helping redo a lot of things that wouild no longer be in
French Lick. it was once a showplace and he did not have to return it to it's once beautiful splendor. But he did a wonderful job. The casino is another thing entirely! the machines do not pay off nearly as much as they should! Las Vegas pays out 97 to 99.7% These are entirely to tight. People around here do not have the money Mr. Cook wants here but visotors from other towns tell me the same thing. It tends to rip you off. Mr. Cook; my husband was an orange shirt. we get no better treatment than anyone else. he lobbied for the casino and ask nothing in return. but everyone wants better machines! and we would also like the money machines back. It's not the same getting paper as those coins chinging into the coin holder
