Full story: The Indianapolis Star

Mr. Denbo is a great man who has had a great career in politics. There are not many people in politics anymore that you can look at and really believe they are an "honest politician".

Many people around the state do not know this man, and you are missing out. He has always put his district first and has done so much for Orange County and that is not even including the casino.

Mr. Denbo, I wish you and your family nothing but the best. District 62 and the state government will miss your knowledge.

I'm not arguing with you on this. I've met Mr. Denbo and have never had anything negative to say about him. My question though is why didn't he serve out the term? Do you think something happened of a personal nature that made him believe he could no longer serve his constituency to the best of his ability?

Retiring in the middle of a term seems to be a trend in politics. Both parties take advantage of the rules here. If you don't intend to finish the term, don't run for office.

Former Rep. Bob Alderman did the same thing before he took a job with INDOT.

I had the pleasure of Mr. Denbo's acquaintance when living in Orange county while working on the Casino project. He threw a fit like a 3 year old when I refused to put his political sign in my front yard on S.R. 56. Also, many people don't realize one of the reasons it took so long to get the Blue Sky Casino license in Orange Co. is because Jerry Denbo was given a tremendous amount of kickbacks (to sway his vote) from those in Evansville to keep nearby Orange Co. from taking their gambling patrons. Also, the Star reported Jerry voted in favor of the "racinos" a few months back knowing very well this would hurt the casino's business. I felt sorry for the "Orange Shirt" group who faithfully followed his lead to start a petition to run the General Contractor (and part owner) of the Casino out of town before it was finished. These old ladies had no idea what they were doing. If Jerry told them to jump off a bridge..........

Mr. Denbo is going to accept a high paying job with the casino. You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours. Typical politics in motion.

I have talked with Mr. Dumbo numerous times and he was a nice man. However, he was an idiot when it came to the casino project. During the construction he would always try to walk through the construction area like he had to be there to approve it. He was also mad after the casino opened when they wouldn't give him a job. He thought it was his right since he was a state rep. His retirement will be a good thing for Orange County.

I guess many of you have never traveled to Orange County. You have never seen what it is like to live in poverty or be barely above the poverty line.

I guess you have never lived in such a small community that when a business left it not only hurt the employees, but it hurt the community.

I see one of you that had negative comments was from Fort Wayne (a town that is not in trouble), Pittsboro (you are basically in Indy's backyard and anyone that lives there can jump on I-74 and head to work in Indy or Crawfordsville) and Vincennes (you live 1 hour from Terre Haute and Evansville and have Crane in your backyard).

Orange County residents either work in the county or have to travel on little 2-lane roads to work in places like Salem, Louisville, and Jasper everyday. It's either that or move out of the county. When a job leaves, it DOES affect the county.

Jerry Denbo has done alot to improve economic development in Orange County. Besides Patoka Lake, Paoli Peaks, and a run-down hotel, there was nothing there. He helped bring in a casino and helped a commitee select the best choice of who should own and operate the hotel and casino.

They made a great choice by selecting the Cook family and Blue Sky Casino. They have done nothing but restore the hotel and the dome to its natural glory. The plans that are in the works will make the area a version of Branson, MO.

Also, this does not help Orange County. It helps counties like Dubois, Lawrence, Washington, Crawford, and Martin.

Also, if Jerry Denbo did want a job or if the casino offered him a job, why should he not take it? He would get to live in his hometown and make a little money. Like any of you wouldn't do it?

Here's what I'm trying to get across to the rest of you. In the world we live in today where we have politicians having affairs, making passes at airports, and being picked up for drinking, here is a man that has had a great career as a politician. A career as a politician that has saved a community from being completely erased from the maps.

People today disgust me. Can anyone just say thank you and keep your comments to yourself? The first five people that posted comments (including myself) did.

Dear Proud:

I personally lived in Orange County for 2 years. Please quit your whining about the state of economy there. You have obviously never been to areas of Indpls. where the homeless live on the streets. There is plenty of money in French Lick, Paoli, and the outlying areas. Please don't insult us. The people who claim to be struggling ARE because they choose to be. There are plenty of jobs (this is a never ending argument). Also, please spare us the Cook Group story....they DID NOT build the Casino, Event Center or Parking Garage, Lauth did!!! Before you kiss Jerry's feet, ask him why he voted in favor of the "racinos" (slot machines in the horse tracks). Better yet, ask him who lined his pockets for that vote. As for politicians and affairs? Even the gas station attendants know Jerry's history......PLEASE, think outside the box Paoli!!!

It won't, otherwise IndyStar would be all over it and Denbo would have never retired if he knew his leaving would put his party out of power.

Jerry Denbo is in favor of one thing and that is taking care of Jerry Denbo. He voted for the racinos. He said he was going to miss being with everyone and he mentioned the lobbyists. His hand was always out and knew where to get his palm greased. I knew Jerry when he was a coach and a teacher. Jerry is well aware of the fact the Casino at French Lick is a loser. I predict in 5 years they will be gone now that Steve Beshear is going to push the Casinos through in Kentucky. Cook can't pump enough money in that place to make it survive. For those who think the Valley is in poverty are correct but it is brought on by themselves. The biggest obstacle the Casino has in the hiring process is finding people who can pass a drug test and stay clean after they are hired. Denbo dropped out of the town council race because he knew he would lose. He can't get elected another term in the Legislature and that is why he is quitting. The people in the Valley have had enough of Jerry Denbo. The people found out there is not pot of gold at the end of the rainbow like they were promised.
